  1. Using E/F/G/H for network resources is always going to cause you problems, change it if you can. We use letters after N purely to give ourselves some flexibility and not have to worry about this sort of thing.
  2. Ryan's silent installers save me a lot of work
  3. My view is simple - No. I've worked in schools for over 8 years in I.T. roles, laptops are great in theory but never get a cost effective amount of use. Primary kids in particular can be careless with equipment (not on purpose) and it's an expensive and time consuming resource. Our primaries are actually starting to move back to desktop suites of computers as they're finding carts of iBooks and Dells to be too unreliable or too troublesome to use regularly without a dedicated member of teaching staff to coordinate them. Personally I think actually getting teachers to teach and relying less on a computer to do it for them might help - but then again I'm stupid!
  4. I just email my specs to my Dell account manager and he replies within 1 working day (usually 2 hours) with costs. If I mess anything up he usually spots it too
  5. This smells of more spam for the same person who posted here: http://www.edugeek.net/index.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&t=11349&highlight=ictforums.co.uk Worth checking if the IP is the same?
  6. the days of going to school and being given our minature GLASS milk bottles to drink from that had been outside, weren't cleaned and when you burst the foil top (best part) you found it was frozen solid in the winter Great memories
  7. I take a while to get going in the morning, usually about 45mins before I'm out the door. The cats wouldn't forgive me if I didn't feed them first.. and the fiancee wouldn't forgive me if I didn't bring her fresh filter coffee in bed!
  8. I'd love to be able to do them in house but as I'm the only IT person, the CDT tech is unhelpful and the science tech is useless there isn't much choice but to pay! We'd still have problems with the electricity supplies, old building and health and safety wise my boss would simply never allow it.
  9. I voted lib dem at the last elections in scotland, didn't help as the ministry of muppetry (AKA SNP) got in anyway. I'll probably never vote conservative or labour again and know I'll never vote for the SNP. I'm a constant floating voter
  10. As plexer said you just select a different range of addresses for it to dish out to clients, we use to run two in the school all the time without any issues (we didn't use PXE/RIS) though.
  11. You vote for a party, it elects a leader, you get that leader as PM. You do not vote directly for a PM, never have in the UK. That's part of the current problem, we're becoming more like the US in terms of wanting "personalities". I don't know about anyone else but I just don't trust Cameron at all, not because he's a tory but because of the bile coming from his mouth. I don't want a petty PM, Brown is bad enough. Ignorance is not an excuse - the UKs democratic system has always been that someone else takes over when a PM steps down, John Major did this when he managed to kick Thatcher out - then went on to win the next election. At the time there were no calls for him to call an early election, fact is that the conservatives simply don't like this being done to them.
  12. Smartboard 77" + projector and full installation costs us about £1850, it's what I budget for anyway. The installation part of that is generally about £500 but I've managed to get them to reduce it to about £420 now. I still think it's a rip off but as the council refuse to do them and we can't safely do them (and dont have the time either) I don't have any choice.
  13. Very well said, especially about the media who I trust even less these days. it was a non-story that's still being used to fill up BBC News 24 for 23.5hours a day.
  14. I don't like either of the main parties (or the SNP in Scotland who are my least favourite of all!) but I don't think labour have done that bad on the economy and this is coming from someone who's had a 10% pay cut and never getting another pay rise thanks to a labour council who can't balance it's budget. Sadly I can see Scotland becoming independent if the tories get in again, they're THAT unpopular up here. Personally I'll emigrate the canada or move down to England if that happens - independent scotland would be unsufferable to live in :?
  15. I start at about 7am most mornings although recently it's been a two hour commute so even though I'm up at 6am I'm not in until nearly 9am!
  16. I'd rather jump into the Grand Canyon, bounce painfully all the way down then be used as a donkey sex toy than vote for Cameron or even give the tories a chance. Honestly do you lot actually believe they can balance the books? they make up numbers constantly, pulling them out of thin air whilst Cameron stands about looking like a baby who's needing a nappy change. I don't think labour are much better but frankly I simply can't trust the tories after the stunts they pulled on Scotland with the poll tax (testing it out on us before putting it into the rest of the country) and just detest Cameron. He's scum. I'd respect Brown even less if he called an election he didn't think he could win - seriously how stupid would he have to be to do that? The torys peeps are just annoyed that he didn't, crying over nothing like a bunch of toddlers.
  17. Can you make it two please? I could really do with one of them around here!
  18. Cheers dhicks, Its actually on a job I was considering applying for and it's not in a school! I'm looking to move way from schools a little, bit fed up of staffs attitude and constantly silly demands being made by them
  19. I'd never do it, never I tells you!
  20. I want from £12,000 in 2000 to £23,000 in 2004 by using our councils accelerated progression scheme (oddly enough they've cancelled it). I had to prove I was worth the money essentially, writing a report each year that was then assessed by my boss and a group of managers.
  21. Cheers Peter, good website that
  22. I've seen a job advertised that asks for a good knowledge of SBS2003, I'm currently running found Windows Server 2003 - standard edition. Does anyone know how much it varies from this? Is it similar? I'm guessing it would be, but I don't want to look into this job if it's entirely different and my training wouldn't really apply to it at all. I also wouldn't want a job where I'd be dealing with it if I was going to struggle although lets face it MS server versions are usually pretty easy to get to grips with.
  23. cheers geoff, I'll look into it and try to limit it to a few folders that seem to be the ones targetted by the "ghost of file deletion" recently
  24. I've never had any issues like this, wish I did as pupils bring all sorts in on their drives. Have you had a look at the USB drivers the computers are using? might be worth while getting updates rather than using the MS supplied ones.
