  1. I use a mixture of VB and batch files. My VB skills are very limited, hoping to improve these over the summer but as I've been writing batch files for so long I tend to rely on these. VB is capable of so much more though and it's neat and tidy. I did setup Kix on another schools network and the network manager there swears by it but to me it's just adding more software that could go wrong. I'd rather use what we have than continually add layers to it.
  2. I'd check that you're using Media Player Classic and not just skim reading that suggestion from Chris. http://sourceforge.net/projects/guliverkli/ I know what Media player classic is mate and no it still doesn't work
  3. we only have a single layer at present but yeah that's pretty useful Contink
  4. Ah that'd explain why I couldn't get it working at machine startup
  5. I've got something working almost the way I wanted it and posted it on the scripting section: http://www.edugeek.net/index.php?name=Forums&file=posting&mode=editpost&p=97523
  6. Used Maniac's and (at least one others) scripts to make my own. Removes all network printers (leaves local ones) and uses Maniacs script to add printers according to the container OU of the computer. I've got it working as a logon script for users, anyone know if it's possible to use it as a startup script for computer accounts? I can't seem to get it to run that way! Also if anyone is bored feel free to tidy it up - I'm no scripting genius like many on here One question though, would it be possible to make it completely skip the whole thing (deletion of printers and adding new ones) if the computer isn't in one of the UOs listed? ================= on error resume next 'Set variables. Set shell= WScript.CreateObject("WScript.Shell") Set WshNetwork = WScript.CreateObject("WScript.Network") dim Counter, PrinterPath 'Remove All Network Printers. Set oPrinters = WshNetwork.EnumPrinterConnections FOR Counter = 0 to oPrinters.Count - 1 IF mid(oPrinters.Item(Counter), 1, 2) = "\\" THEN PrinterPath = oPrinters.Item(Counter) WshNetwork.RemovePrinterConnection PrinterPath, True, True End If Next 'Set even more variables. Set objWshNetwork = CreateObject("WScript.Network") Set objAdsSystemInfo = CreateObject("adsysteminfo") Set objComputerName = GetObject("LDAP://" & objAdsSystemInfo.ComputerName) Set objOU = GetObject(objComputerName.Parent) strOU = replace(objOU.Name,"OU=","") Dim computerName computerName = LCase(WshNetwork.ComputerName) 'Delete existing connections to network printers For i = 0 to oPrinters.Count - 1 Step 2 On Error Resume Next if Left(oPrinters.Item(i), 3) <> "lpt" And Left(oPrinters.Item(i), 3) <> "usb" then WshNetwork.RemovePrinterConnection oPrinters.Item(i+1), true, true else WScript.Echo "No network printers found" end if 'Add printers depending on AD OU containing computer. Next Select Case strOU Case "IT1" objWshNetwork.AddWindowsPrinterConnection "\\print\Dell1700 IT1" objWshNetwork.SetDefaultPrinter "\\PRINT\Dell1700 IT1" objWshNetwork.AddWindowsPrinterConnection "\\print\HP2500C IT1" Case "IT2" objWshNetwork.AddWindowsPrinterConnection "\\print\Dell 1700n IT2" objWshNetwork.SetDefaultPrinter "\\PRINT\Dell 1700n IT2" End Select ================= I trawled through a lot of the scripts on this forum to put this together so none of it is my own work! The reasons I wanted it to delete the printers before creating new ones is it'll remove any problems of moving computers around between containers etc.
  7. Hi all, Using Maniacs script (as it seems fairly straight forward) although I've run into some minor problems! I've edited and added the script to my machine group OU to run at machine startup (in this case IT1). I'm getting no error messages but at the same time I'm getting no printers added. Is there anyway to ensure the script is running? the gpresult says it is but as nothing is happening I'm a little confused. Script is below: ----------------------------- on error resume next Set objWshNetwork = CreateObject("WScript.Network") Set objAdsSystemInfo = CreateObject("adsysteminfo") Set objComputerName = GetObject("LDAP://" & objAdsSystemInfo.ComputerName) Set objOU = GetObject(objComputerName.Parent) strOU = replace(objOU.Name,"OU=","") Select Case strOU Case "IT1" objWshNetwork.AddWindowsPrinterConnection "\\print\Dell1700 IT1" objWshNetwork.SetDefaultPrinter "\\PRINT\Dell1700 IT1" objWshNetwork.AddWindowsPrinterConnection "\\print\HP2500C IT1" End Select ----------------------------- What I was wondering if we need a $ after the share name or if the Case "IT1" should have the parent container in it so it'd be "Workstations,IT1" Any suggestions? I have the awful feeling either I've done something wrong or I've missed something blatantly obvious. I've even disabled the other VB script that runs at computer startup just incase - even though it doesn't use the same variable names. Well it's definately running at startup. Just removed a quotation mark to check it would error - which it did. So it's running without any problems yet not managing to connect to the printers. I'm going to check permissions etc now, must be something daft.
  8. teachers just don't want to know sadly, warned them on several occassions about showing dvds in here!
  9. Next week is the last week up here before the summer holidays start. Does anyone else always find the last couple of weeks hectic? I've got so many daft requests coming in that are "urgent" when they're clearly not. "I can't play DVDs on my IWB" is one of the more befuddling ones. I go to check it out and it's Shrek or Ocean's Eleven, in a chemistry lab! I have tons of work that must be completed by the start of the holidays, suppliers to chase up, images to get departments to "sign off" so they can be used over the summer, etc, etc, etc. I'm utterly swamped!
  10. Our council in their desperation to recruit more teachers gave them a huge recruitment package, part of it was loan of a laptop for 4 years. These laptops staff more or less see as their own, generally I have no problems with them using them at home as most have common sense and bring them in regularly so the AV software updates. I do however refuse to maintain the computers or repair them if they're filled with privately owned software. As far as I'm concerned the instant someone installed their own ADSL modem, dial up, uTorrent or games they are on their own. I support school computers, used in school for the curriculum. I'm not there to help people get iTunes to work. Staff are responsible for their own laptops or ones in their departments. We haven't had any go missing in the past 16 months since I started though. Staff on the whole are pretty savy and won't leave them out although I must admit our pupils aren't a bunch of thieves either! Our "class in a box" laptops (20 laptops/printer/wireless in a cabinet) are stored out of the way, padlocked with very good locks and in locked rooms without windows. In other words only staff can get to them when they're not in use. It's not fool proof but it does mean that teachers "own" laptops are the only ones regularly exposed to possible theft and since the teachers are quite possessive of them they're well looked after. I must admit I'm pretty lucky with the staff I have in general though.
  11. Any online resources that tell me how to do it without R2? So far i've found plenty sites stating how to do it with R2 but none without :?
  12. Oooh that looks pretty nice Maniac cheers. I'm fumbling through the scripts section at the moment but most seem pretty specific for each site the person is working at!
  13. Hi, Does anyone know a way of doing this? I currently add them to all users on a computer by using the "rundll32 printui.dll,PrintUIEntry /ga /n" command, which works fine but isn't the worlds most managable solution! I'll be separating the computers into OUs over the summer break and was wondering if there's a way of adding printers from our print server to each OU and setting the default printer. Possible?
  14. Ours is similar except we have no control over any of that kit - it's all controlled centrally by central IT
  15. Every call I've logged with Dell has been with UK base support, no idea why numbers some people are calling but I always end up talking to either a Scottish or Irish chap :-P 0870 908 0500 Might well be a super special number though!
  16. tried it, no idea why but won't play them either. Just got the latest version of VLC which I'll probably just tell them to use. works a treat, just wish it had a nicer interface edit: just downloaded the WMP11 skin for VLC which is pretty nice!
  17. I'm using that screensaver over the summer holidays, sick of staff leaving pcs logged in. They know the risks but simply don't give a damn.
  18. Today 3 teachers have all grabbed me with the same problem - they can't play DVDs on their IWBs (what a waste.) Anyway as it turns out it's generally DVDs that use the Inter Actual Player, which whinges about resolution/colour then stops. Windows media player simply won't load the film, no idea why as I have put on a couple of codec packs in the hope of finding one that it'll like. As with Inter actual player it whinges about a DVD decoder and talks about changing my hardware acceleration! I can get DVDs to play through VLC player without any problems but it's hardly the best interface for a teacher to use - it's not very intuitive, but it is free! Anyone have any suggestions for what to use? I've always disliked powerDVD/WinDVD etc and as we'd have to buy these I'm guessing the teachers wouldn't be too happy with them either. Buying separate DVD players is not an option.
  19. Stab in the dark but I don't suppose all your clients have the computer browser service enabled do they? We always turn it off here as the servers do that job: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/188001 I've never seen it cause duplicate names but it's done some weird stuff before!
  20. That's the same as myself and a friend in Borders council are getting too
  21. Sadly I'm not in charge of this bloomin blog or I would I'll try and contact the chap who's in france with them! cheers!
  22. http://armadaleacademy.edublogs.org/ Our staff and pupils on their France trip are updating a little blog! Unfortunately we can't view any of the images when in the school, Flickr is blocked centrally for some reason and the yahoo hosted images aren't showing up at all - DNS issues! Can anyone else see them? especially the none flickr ones?
  23. All network hardware (and servers) was replaced in January 2006, runs like a dream with several gig connections where I need them although most clients are still on 100mb. We still have a few Windows 95/98 clients but these are so old I don't really support them anymore. You have to draw the line somewhere and frankly soon I'll do the same with Windows 2000 - although at least it's stable and controllable easily via AD the same as the XP clients.

are you sure that permissions on the PC aren't restricting users? remember a deny will always take effect over everything else.
