  1. Hi peeps, Does anyone know a way to get an extracted version of the downloads of the new version of smartboard? I've tried a few command line switches but without luck. I'm finding that it's simply taking AGES to extract each time I go to install the damn thing. I'll eventually bring all of the smartboards in the school up to this version but not if it's going to take 15mins + just to unpack itself! Gallery is of course the worst but getting both extracted onto a DVD would help a lot!
  2. I haven't bought any for 8+ years now. I don't think any of them offer anything that can't be found online!
  3. bleh nothing more annoying especially if you have to use that room as your office as I do! If it was really bad I'd be tempted to switch of non-essential servers until it's fixed. Would prompt the school to get it done quickly
  4. We have central IT that can provide support for everything from desktop, comms, web to the servers. The quality of support varies massively from each section and generally I don't rely on the desktop chaps for anything at all. Some of their staff are great but others are very poor and you never know who'll turn up to help you! The server team generally are pretty good though, I get on pretty well with their team leader which probably helps and the chap who they always send out to give me a hand is top notch. shame he's been given a 9K pay cut and will probably be leaving He worked remotely over the weekend and managed to get all but 800 files back, they were coming back as mashed up rubbish but most appeared to be temp files anyway. So out of about 920,000 files we've lost 800. I think that's pretty good going! I'm working on getting back a few more at the moment but I think we've been very lucky. It was a freak incident losing 2 of the 5 raid HDDs so quickly (within 10mins) and it's unlikely to ever happen again!
  5. That line you've quoted suggests that the bginfo exe is in the systemroot. I know it isn't on my clients. Perhaps that's causing the problem? I haven't actually tried this yet, still sorting out problems from my pupil servers HDDs breaking on Friday
  6. ace scripts Srochford, out of curiosity is the VB one someone I could run at logon or even in a workstation OU? Tempted to work something like that out, different set backgrounds depending on department, but all changable centrally (hosted on the server). Be handy as I'm renaming all of our suite PCs over the summer
  7. Disable right click and disable it in the options. Job done.
  8. No I'm not being sarcastic for once, they really have done well today! I came into work at 7:30am with my Dell servers beeping away like crazy, two drives on my RAID5 array had gone within 10 minutes of each other. Pupil data for half the school was gone, pupil servers weren't online, DHCP was gone..and that the server admin utility was essentially crying as the number of faults it was reporting on the PowerVault. Contacted my LEA, the server team had someone on site helping me less than 45mins later. HE handled the call from Dell whilst I fended off staff and talked to senior management. Dell had replacement drives with us within a hour which we fitted and he's been sorting out all of the niggly problems all day whilst I've been watching and learning Currently restoring from backup, have lost next to nothing. A few minor issues to iron out but frankly I'm happy to leave them until monday morning, after the day we've had I need to get my butt home for a beer! I could have sorted most of the problems on my own but it was very nice to know that I had the help there when I really needed it. Staff were going mental this morning and obviously I can't blame them for doing so but having someone else to handle what sounded like a Dell support call from hell was ace on it's own!
  9. wow looking good, cheers Rush
  10. I was off a LOT last year, my first year working here (about 6 times and a total of 20+ days). Mostly down to chest infections, one of which had me hospital for 2 days. I've no idea why as I've never really had anything like that before. I seem to get the cold now and then but it's still chest infections that occur the most. I put it mostly down to the air conditioning and the fact that I work in the same room as the servers, it's all the dry stale air! I do wash my hands very carefully before I eat lunch though.
  11. Does anyone know a decent clip art gallery that I can get? Just a massive collection of pictures that I can share out over the network. We have a few programs with clip art but most seem to keep them all in one large file :? obviously to stop you using it with other packages. any recommendations?
  12. Witch - that's exactly what I do and I wasn't taught, sort of just felt like the best way
  13. Dell Optiplex 745s are pretty solid, you need to padlock or cable tie the release mechanism but it's made so you can do this. The power voltage switch needs to be covered or glued though (115/230v doo-daa on the PSU). Got about 30 of them now and quite impressed by them although we really don't have any trouble with kids vandalising base units, only had 2 since I started and it was the same kid flipping the voltage over whilst it was on.
  14. Same, I'm self taught at touch typing and would use my middle finger to press the X (infact I just did when I typed that!) The ring finger just doesn't feel like it lines up at all!
  15. Good god no way! manual print queues?!
  16. We finish up for the summer at the end of June I'll be working hard in school over July, got a ton of work I've planned. Then I'm off to Cyprus for a holiday at the beginning of August until the school returns. Oddly I always take the last two weeks off as thats when staff return to check up on their classrooms now and then and have a habit of asking for last minute super utterly urgent work to be done at short notice.
  17. I ask them to request it again, but this time in a pirate voice* *granted only one day a year
  18. We aren't required to do them, frankly it'd waste a lot of time filling them in!
  19. Tried it on a couple of PCs, reasonably quick but renders some pages rather oddly. I've no idea why Apple do this, I remember them making a complete hash of Appleworks 6 on the PC because of it's UI and instability. It's near pointless to bring out a browser on a PC then refuse to include PC OS style things like tool tips, resizable windows that are standard etc.

    Recover Word Doc

I'm guessing probably not as it's a floppy disk which has clearly become utterly corrupt. You can try it on a different platform (mac or pc.) I have in the past recovered PC files on a mac and vice versa. One will read the disk at times when the other computer won't. Who on earth leaves an important document on a floppy disk with no back up in this day and age!
  21. John - that's what I was thinking too, sometimes I want people to know that the PC is being worked on without seeing the work taking place. It's the only thing I've found since I started using NSS as everything else works a treat
  22. Well I'm still going strong on it. In all honesty though Jake the game doesn't take off until youre well past level 20 and have a good group of mates to play with. I and several others won't be going to Warhammer online, I don't trust EA or Mythic to not screw that game up somehow and lets face it the game will be full of l33t freaks I also won a lifetip subs to LOTRO so I'm happy where I am for now

    Visual basic 6

Cheers chaps, looks like they'll just have to use this unless they find the CD they claim to have of VB6. No doubt they'll want 6 if they do!

    Visual basic 6

Outdated? Mate seriously they're just starting to use PCs, instead of old legacy mac software! Has VB6 been replaced by anything? I offered them the VB5 version from the MS site last week and they turned their nose up at it.

    Visual basic 6

Does anyone know if this is free? I know you can download version 5 but the computing staff want VB6 on all clients by the end of the summer holidays. They intend to use it in lessons later this year but oddly nobody seems to have an install CD! I'm fairly convinced that it's not free though.. Can anyone shed some light?
