You could look at SharePoint Online - given that it is largely free in education you'd cut out quite a bit of those license costs. You'd only need to worry about content migration. Can't say much about Moodle at the moment, in relation to Office 365.

You're correct - once you deploy AD FS you become the single point of failure, so if your AD FS servers go down for whatever reason, your users will be locked out. There are partner solutions, such as IAM Cloud, that can help mitigate against this, but your summary above is accurate.

Essentially, yes. I'd strongly recommend keeping your administration account in this namespace so avoid being locked out if your ADFS infrastructure is unavailable. The something bit of something.onmicrosoft.com also forms the prefix for your something.sharepoint.com domain too, so picking something fairly meaningful is good practice. You can obviously set up redirects from "nice" domains to point to this, too.

That's why you're hitting difficulties. You can't federate any something.onmicrosoft.com domains; you must add in your own domain and use that. This doesn't have to be your actual production domain, but could be a subdomain or spare other domain instead.

For new customers this feature should already be in place. Existing customers (i.e. pre-upgrade Office 365 Education) will have to wait to be upgraded.

Great! SkyDrive Pro in Office 365 Education is totally different to SkyDrive for consumers; SkyDrive Pro is part of SharePoint Online. Office 365 and the Microsoft consumer services are on different identity platforms so, in theory, it could be possible to prevent access to the consumer services such as SkyDrive, Outlook.com, etc. whilst still allowing access to Office 365 Education. Yes. Yes. You can pick and choose which licences to assign to your users. If you only want them to have access to SharePoint Online then only tick the SharePoint Online box!

Well this thread seems to be looking after itself! It's a relatively common mistake for people to federate their administrative account but hopefully one Microsoft Support can help you rectify - you only make the mistake once!

If you've got no users live then you could, if you wanted to, sign up on the new Office 365. As for the licensing - it depends on how you've got them allocated. If you have your licences attached to your VL (i.e. you'd have to be an EES customer, not OVS-ES) then it's more complicated. If you just signed up via the website and manage your licences that way then it's just a case of literally starting again from scratch. You'll need to remove your existing domain from the existing tenant in order to be able to add it in to the new one. OR... you could just wait, but at the moment we are not talking about the service upgrade. Details will come soon.

Yes, SkyDrive Pro is part of the education offering - each user gets 7GB of storage.

If it has cached credentials from before the upgrade then that may be part of the problem. The upgrade involves changing the identity platform to Office 365 - hence clearing the cookies to see if that helps. If you've had this experience with a few upgrades then I'd recommend flagging this with support - if there is a problem that needs addressing in the platform they'll need a service request (or several if it affects lots of customers) in order to track it. My gut feeling is that clearing cookies will solve it.

Have you tried deleting all the cookies? Users can still login at outlook.com as long as they use the correct structure of http://outlook.com/yourdomain.com.

Contact Live@edu support. Although password copy is now in place, so upgrading is actually (for most customers) a smooth process. You can only defer 1 time.

With the newer versions of Office, and Office 2013 in particular, users can save straight to their SkyDrive Pro folders without having to sync it from a local folder first. For other non-Office files users can drag and drop them into SkyDrive Pro directly in the browser. There is also a sync feature with SkyDrive Pro and Office 2013 which allows you to keep a folder on the local PC in sync with the cloud, but this isn't really suitable for shared devices - however it's excellent for 1:1 devices.

Office 365 for education is included in the 27th release. Every new sign up from then will be on the new Office 365 which includes SkyDrive Pro.
