Respectfully, I have to disagree. Hybrid is not well suited for deployments where the target is to remove the on-premises Exchange server in the short term. You're right insofar as hybrid allows silky-smooth mailbox migrations, but it requires a lot of configuration and potential investment in your local infrastructure. For a simple migration, I'd say that this is not best use of resources.

Don't forget, people can always tick the box to remember credentials in Outlook. So they might have to enter them once, but they can just tick the box. Obviously, if your students are using OWA that's even better. You don't have to disable OWA - in fact, just disabling OWA doesn't block access. Instead you can use the Office 365 admin portal to disable their logon capabilities altogether. Also, if you did go down the AD FS route then you could just lock the account in AD.

You need to look at the staged migration option, or depending on your longer term plans, Exchange Hybrid. Also, SSO is a big deal and not usually what most people actually require (even if they think they need it). I'd take some time to look at DirSync & Password Sync as I think it is a far simpler approach and ticks most boxes for people. Best advice: keep it as simple as you can, as long as you can.

If you're not running an Exchange server then the best you can hope for with the free tools is a simple IMAP migration, or a PST capture. There may be third party tools (I'm thinking Quest, Binary Tree, MigrationWiz, CloudMigrator365, etc.) that might be able to do more.

I hate to pull out LMBTFY, but here goes! Let me Bing that for you! Configuring the management agent is a simple, but potentially dangerous process. It goes without saying: don't be tempted to fiddle with your production environment otherwise you could end up deleting users by accident or altering the way the MA works into non-supportable state! When you move an object into an OU that isn't synchronised by DirSync it will process the object as a deletion in Azure AD meaning you could lose data. Hope that helps!

Automating the assignment of licences is a good thing - but I'd schedule the script to run in line with your provisioning methods (i.e. every 3hrs if you're using DirSync). I'd also be careful since I don't think this script accounts for users that are deliberately unlicensed. You could end up in a situation where you're assigning licences to users unintentionally. As @themightymrp says, this really needs to be extended to fit into the education scenario, but the basic framework is a good starting point. Hmm - sadly that's a new one on me! Office 365 accounts are different to Microsoft Accounts (formerly Windows Live ID), but it is possible to associate a Microsoft Account with an Office 365 account - it's just a manual (i.e. user-driven) process. Your existing Live@edu users will be fine since they were provisioned with a Microsoft Account automatically. You raise a good point though - one which I'll try and find an answer to!

I can't stress enough how important it is to keep your deployment as simple as possible. That said, my thoughts are below. Exchange Hybrid is awesome, but complex. Are you intending to keep your local Exchange server (I mean, really really - can't you move all your mailboxes into Exchange Online?)? You could have two tenants. Don't. Exchange Online now supports address book policies that you can use to segregate the GAL if you need to. Going down the route of two separate tenants might seem simpler logically, but has a big impact. Good move - AD FS is a great SSO solution, but requires a lot of time and potentially some investment to pull off properly. DirSync + Password Sync is a really simple and elegant solution for keeping your IDs in sync. You can do this, but there is a cost. To loop back to my point above, do you really really need to keep mailboxes on-premises? If you do you could look at Exchange Online Archiving, but it would be far simpler to keep your mailboxes in one place as this would remove the need for you to keep an Exchange org on-premises (i.e. saves you time, money and makes management easier). If you do need to keep Exchange for whatever reason then you can set up hybrid coexistence and use ECP to manage your users and migrating mailboxes between the two environments is simple enough (i.e. OST files do not need rebuilding, etc.). Configuring it is easier than it's ever been with the Hybrid Config Wizard. I just think that the best advice is to keep it simple.

If you're running Exchange or Exchange Online through Office 365 (obvious this next bit is a little useless if you're not!) you could always set up your rooms and other "bookable" resources as resource mailboxes and manage it view Outlook / OWA.

Have you thought about the Acer W510 or similar? Full multi-touch tablet device, but with proper detachable keyboard. Obviously, if you're after something with a bit more horsepower then there are other options, but might be worth a look!
