When I have an answer I can share about schools in your situation believe me I'll make it known! To everyone that might have a question, if you think I'm being a bit stuffy in my answers please understand that there is very careful guidance about how I can respond to your questions at the moment. It means that if you licence your staff for Office via OVS-ES, or EES, you can licence students for Office 365 ProPlus for no additional cost. Office 365 ProPlus is the version that allows you to install Office on up to 5 devices. (Office 365 ProPlus) Office 365 Plan A2, while free, does not include Office 365 ProPlus. It only becomes available for no additional cost when you have your staff licensed for Office via your volume licensing agreement.

You don't have to use Exchange Online, Lync Online or SharePoint Online to benefit from Student Advantage (although clearly I think you should ). No. You will have to get the licences from your licensing reseller and add them to your VL agreement. This will not be available via the "purchase services" section of the portal. Once you've done that the licences will appear in Office 365 for you to assign to your student users.

Not necessarily. The Student Advantage is delivered through Office 365. Office 365 Education Plan A2 is not required for students to leverage this benefit.

No. As the post says, if you cover staff/faculty for Office on your VL (OVS-ES, EES) then the Student Advantage benefit allows you to licence Office 365 ProPlus for students at no additional cost. If you don't use Office 365, sign up! This is not "free Office". Please read the blog post carefully.

Slow down, folks! I should get this as a tattoo: keep it as simple as you can, as long as you can. To get started you just need to sign up. No need for DirSync, no need for ADFS or anything. You can import users from a CSV file, add your domain, and get started in minutes. If you want to automatically provision users from your AD, and have passwords sync'd then you can deploy DirSync + Password Sync, that's the next level of integration. If you want full blown single sign-on and are prepared to make your environment highly available, to the outside world (securely, obviously), 24x7 then you can deploy ADFS but I would not start assuming you need it. The beauty is that you can scale up the integration as you need to - start simple, work up from there.

Well clearly there's one... That said, there are others like Proofpoint, but I don't have first hand experience of configuring it, or what the costs might be like compared with Exchange Online Plan 2.

When you say archive... do you mean you just need to attempt to keep mail items for 6 months but if a user purges them it doesn't matter, or must you absolutely keep every mail item for a 6 month rolling window for compliance purposes? If it's the former, you could just turn on the online archive for mailboxes and set up some retention policies to move mail items to the archive and delete after 6 months. If the latter, Exchange Online Plan 2 gives you the increased single item recovery window. Or, you can journal off to another service (i.e. on-premises mail server like Exchange, another cloud service that cannot be Exchange Online, etc.).

Newer is better - so Exchange 2013 I believe the attribute you need is msExchHideFromAddressLists.

Yes - you absolutely need to have extended your schema! Very simple process but obviously, messing with AD can have unintended consequences so proceed with caution. I don't have a guide handy, but I'm sure quick search will turn something up. The important thing to know is that you don't have to deploy Exchange to get the attributes, but without Exchange locally to provide the EMC you'll have to edit the additional attributes using ADSI Edit or something.

If you're syncing with your local AD you need to set the attribute in AD and wait for DirSync to push it back up!

Good man! Clearly, the bug needs fixing, and I'm sure it will but for now that's probably the more ... logical? way to handle it!
