"Federated" SSO has not been rolled out to Live@edu. The SSO experience, along with user provisioning and password syncing remain unchanged. The new technologies (ADFS, DirSync, etc.) only apply to Office 365 for education which is not yet widely available. "If it ain't broke, don't fixt it" is a good way to view your current ILM installation - unless there's a burning desire to rebuild it all under FIM, I'd leave it alone for now!

It's probably possible using RBAC. I've been reading about this (yesterday in fact) for Office 365. Would need to check if it also works for Outlook Live.

In short, no. You need to prove not only that you're eligible for the service as an academic institution (this is done automatically for certain TLDs) but also that you're the legitimate owner of the domain. This must be done for each domain you want to register, but it only needs to be done once. At the moment Live@edu is the service available to schools. If you're planning to roll out Office 365 any time soon please drop me a PM.

I've noticed a number of people posting about migrating to Live@edu - there seem to be lots of people needing help, and a few people with great knowledge and experience to share... With that in mind, would running a migration specific webcast Q&A, to talk about and share best practice for migrating to Live@edu, be something people would be interested in? What topics would you want to cover (relating to migration), and when is the best time of day to run it?

Students get the Office Web Apps free, as shown in the diagram - the $2 per month charge is only if you want add a full copy of Microsoft Office that users can install on their PCs.

How to configure an SMTP relay for Office 365 - Have you tried following the steps outlined here? (I can't guarantee this is true for Live@edu too, without testing).

Not necessarily - as well as the kits containing deployment information, they've also got marketing stuff in. If you are struggling to promote the services across your school and want some physical resources to help with that then still drop us a mail. I am not the keeper of the kits myself, but colleagues in my team will always get back to you. That's good feedback. Generally speaking, if it is on an official platform (i.e. help.outlook.com, microsoft.com, etc.) then it is usually kept as up to date as possible by our tech writers. Obviously blog and forum content will always be superseded as new information becomes available, but that's just the way those things work. Live@edu has been around a while now, and it's had a lot of improvements over the years - there's a lot of documentation to keep up to date! I'd like to think that, in the UK at least, we're an approachable team so if you ever had any questions that our various websites can't answer you could tweet me, email me or give me a call and we'd be able to find an answer.

I'm sure we'll be able to bring a few along - we don't have a lot of storage space at BETT, so even if we don't have the physical kits on the stand we can certainly take details and make sure they're sent after the show!

A good point, and depending on your specific requirements, Forefront Online Protection for Exchange (free with Live@edu) can help in this respect. ILM 2007 has now been retired from the price lists so it would be Forefront Identity Manager 2010 that you'd need, but whether you need it at all is again down to your requirements. How do you manage your student users in Live@edu at the moment? You could automate the provisioning and password syncing, but for a (relatively) small number of low-turnover users it may be feasible to manage them manually at first, with a view to implementing some form of ID management at a point in future. There are, as with life, lots of options!

Given that you're in a position where you have to do something either way, why not move your staff up to Live@edu as well, as you're already familiar with it for students. If you had Exchange in place already I could understand some argument for keeping staff on-prem, but as you're going to have to migrate them *somewhere* why go to the cost/time/effort of standing up a whole new Exchange environment?

I'm already looking forward to it - we'll be talking about lots of things, including Live@edu and Office 365 for education. So I'm ready and waiting for your questions!
