Good morning, I have started helping a primary school who have purchased 16 Samsung tablets. They have purchased without considering what they want to use them for, or how to manage them. I have helped them source a trolley to house the devices. Does any one have suggestions on managing the tablets such that an administrator can easily deploy apps, update them etc? Any suggestions or advice would be greatly received as always!

Hi, thanks for both of your posts, I have the standard raid controller for this server. Not entirely sure which it would be. It says on documentation HP Smart Array controller, not sure if that helps.

Good afternoon, I very recently purchased an HP HP ProLiant DL320e Gen8 Intel® Xeon® E3-1220v2 Quad-Core (3.1GHz) server. Unfortunately, the bursar made a mixup with the quantities and only ordered only one 500gb hdd. I am extremely keen to get this set up. My question is, if I keep this system as a RAID 0 now, and install Server 2012 now on RAID 0 (one 500gb drive), can I add an additional 500gb without having to rebuild the RAID such that I could at least change the config to make a mirror? Any suggestions would be most appreciated!

In an ideal world, I would get a larger sized one, but the school simply doesn't have the space to house one and based on it's troubled past with staff unplugging servers to charge their mobile phones, I want this in a cab at any cost. We have a deeper than usual comms cab, so this HP should fit in very nicely. I have taken on board your comments re virtualisation and more ram. How much ram would you recommend? Double? Also, which Virtualisation software would you recommend? I have used HyperV before? My only other concern is I must have two NICs which are fully working as the school has two separate networks, and I require two nics to connect to both. Presumably, this would not be a problem with virtualisation.

Golly, that is slightly precarious. The one I am looking at would actually fit into the coms cab.

Based on a V2 being the one for me (as I can accommodate it) would the left hand system on the attached screenshot be the better server? Processor appears to be a little better.

Ahaha, I thought that there was one which would fit. This is the one for me. Simple reason is we already have a huge HPX1600 G2. We have no server cabs anywhere, and no room for them, only wall mounted coms cabs. I am not keen on having servers dotted around in unsecured areas around the school. If I can at least get one in a locked cab, I will sleep easier at night.

Do none of the DL320e Gen8 fit in a standard rack?!

Hi, it was recently suggested to me on this forum that Gen8 servers from HP may be suitable for purchase at my school. I work at another school who are also looking to invest in a server to take care of Sophos, WSUS and act as a DC. Can anyone tell me if either the DL320e Gen8 V2 or V3 will fit in a standard network cab (one which can accommodate switches and is no deeper than a switch)? I know that many HP rack mount servers are really deep and they would not fit in the smaller cabs the school has. Any advice would be really appreciated.

Hi there, I have a 2 year old integrated smart board and projector which is playing me up a little. I don't have any spare systems to try on the board to establish if it could just be the laptop playing games. No matter how many times the user re-aligns, using 20 points, 80 points or more, when using her fingers to press, it is pin point accurate, as soon as you use any pen, it is about 7 or 8 centimeters off. If I use the diagnostics software, I can trace lines perfectly, as soon as you go back to normal user mode, the pens are all over the place. I have tried updating software, reinstalling, etc etc. What could this be?

Ok, this is a useful comment to make, as I had forgotten that in an ideal world, Sophos would not be on a DC. What would you do if you are running a school with two networks? An admin and a curriculum? Say I get a fresh server to run Sophos. Can I make it a DC for two different domains on separate networks? I can't see how Sophos would authenticate with systems for both domains, if it were only a dc for one. Hope this makes sense? In one school I work at, the admin and curriculum are totally separate networks. The only way the servers communicate with both networks for printing or file sharing is dual NICs. They both have different domains, IP subnets and ranges, user logons etc.

Thanks, will do. Ok, one other issue I had not considered. The FRDC is a Server 2008 but it runs Ranger. Does anyone think it would be a problem to add a DC to a ranger server? Thanks as always

Ah sorry, I was focussing on the HP ProLiant DL320. I will have a look at the Gen8 models now.

But is an old system going to reliably run server 12?

Hi there, Quite a long story, but I need to set up a desktop computer to become a DC and run the Sophos Antivirus Console we have at our school. I have around 450-500 to spend on something, can anyone recommend? The school has an account with Misco, however for that price, most of the i5 processor systems don't appear to have any CD drives or are SFF. I was hoping for a bog standard HP desktop PC, no monitor, no kb or mouse, no SFF, just a CD drive, i5 processor and a large hdd. Seems harder than I thought, most seem to be small form these days. Any suggestions would be really good

Hi, I am quite confused by this problem. We have a number of Kyocera TASKalfa 3050ci photocopiers dotted around the school which also function as printers. Each has a static IP address and is shared as a printer via our 2008 server. Staff have reported that the Staff Room Kyocera no longer prints. It photocopies fine, but if they send a print job, it never comes out. I have looked into this and have ascertained that jobs are clearing from the queue without a problem, the printer in question is resolvable via it's IP address or host name, I am able to access the printer from the printer web page. If I try and send test prints, they show as going through, but nothing comes out at the other end. The same drivers (used for the other identical printers) are also not solving the problem. I have tried adding the printer locally to a computer, such that I bypass the server, this has also not helped. What else can I try? Could there be something on the copier menu which has been changed to stop print jobs coming through? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I believe we did this last time, but I will ask them to check if we have the correct firmware now. - - - Updated - - - The 2's are on the same controller just in different ports. They are all part of the same raid.

They are HP MB1000BAWJP 461134-003 Replacement drives which then failed, have also been replaced with replacement drives.

Hi there, Have been using HP kit for years, never had any serious problems. Along side a ML350 G6 and ML360 G5, I have an X1600 G2 (this is a storage server, like a NAS but with Storage Server 2008 installed). I am growing increasingly concerned at the number of hard drives this unit seems to be going through. In the 2-3 years we have owned the server from new, we have now got up to our 7th hard drive replacement. Server is under warranty, so although it doesn't cost us anything, I am not happy that this keeps on happening. The server is not that heavily used. Here are a few of the technical details: Its running Storage Server 2008 R2. It has a 5.5tb Raid 6 ADG. The hard drives are a mix of 1tb and 2tb Dual Port 7.2k SAS MDL drives. So far the 2tb's have not failed, just the 1tbs. The server has 10tb's worth of hard drives installed into it. HP seem very uninterested and simply replace the drives under warranty giving no explanation for the failures. I requested they address the issue, and as a consequence we investigated if maybe the server was getting too hot, but apparently the logs suggested everything was ok. Has anyone else had any bother and if so what can I do?!

Hi, we get our Virgin internet connection via LGFL 2.0. LGFL comes with a pretty comprehensive amount of tools, reporting options etc in their support pages however I would like to generate reports with far greater detail in terms of which URLS pupils and staff alike are visiting. To give an example, the current LGFL reporting tool allows me to run a report between two dates to show the top 100 accessed sites or the top 100 denied websites based on URL. If we use the top 100 accessed sites as an example, the list may look something like 100 BBC - Homepage This shows that there have been 100 visits to the domain BBC - Homepage in the timespan I selected. This report does not however show what the exact URL was. For example, someone visiting http://www.bbc.co.uk/games or BBC News - Home will both be counted in this 100. Is there any way I can get more specific information? I don't have access to the LGFL router but I do have a shiny new network aggregation tap in my cupboard which I could hook up. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Oh that looks quite good. Don't need the asset manager part, but does look good. I will give it a trial and see how it runs, would be keen to see if the Active Directory integration works with RM CC3.

How about the email address: [email protected] ?! Spiceworks was one I had already considered, but it seems like a large solution which can do all sorts of other bits and bobs too. Has anyone managed to customise it well enough that it has the fields they require? And if so, did it take you long to achieve? All of the user accounts are stored on our cc3 server which is getting on a little. It does not store their email addresses and I note that spiceworks appears to like using email addresses as effectively the username. I would be quite happy to use a web based solution if it was out there (would mean I could access the faults remotely when not at the school) and would be happy to pay for it. I couldn't check SysAid out as our school has that site blocked as apparently it is classed as 'remote access'!
