  1. Hi, Our server has had several faults relating to Wsus. Yesterday evening, I remote onto it and typed in CHKDSK /F/R onto the command prompt and then rebooted in the hope this would help remedy some of the faults. The server has not come back online since the restart. I am not going to be back in until Monday morning so can't see what could be going on. Does anyone have any suggestions on what could have happened? Chkdsk's can take time but not things long. It has been well over 15 hours now.
  2. Thanks for your post, IP for server is statically assigned as: 10.75.44.250. Nslookup for server hostname returns: Server: UnKnown Address: 10.75.44.250 So looks fine to me. Never had IP problems before. This seems more likely something wrong with software as I am unable to log into the server locally. I have attempted to and it is just showing the following on screen: Please wait for the User Profile Service... Has been showing it for hours.
  3. Hi there, I am not too sure what to do here, we bounced our 2008 R2 server last Thursday and since then, we have been unable to initiate an RDC connection with it. We are able to access all of the network shares, and staff and pupils are able to use the network as usual, but we are completely unable to login to the server either via RDC or physically when in front of it. I have tried to log in locally, but the server is just showing the following which has been on the screen for hours: Please wait for the User Profile Service... I have been unable to bounce it again yet as it has been in constant use by staff. When I get the opportunity, it will be the first thing I do. Can anyone suggest what the problem could be? Despite this problem, I am able to remotely connect to its event viewer and have seen the following errors: The winlogon notification subscriber is taking long time to handle the notification event (Logon).
  4. Not sure why, but did a couple of bounces and now it all works with no problems. Not that impressed with the new version of BE 2012 - it was a nightmare to get on and we couldn't get their support staff to remotely connect to server because their remote software is blocked on LGFL. Got there in the end
  5. Hi, I have opened WSUS as I usually to to see which updates I need to approve and I am getting an error. The only changes to our server, was Backup Exec 2012 was installed during the week. The error is as follows: I have tried restarting the services it suggested, no difference.
  6. Thanks very much, have just requested the DNS changes.
  7. James, thanks so much for your comment. How did you start a 365 account on your domain? Did you approach Microsoft direct? Thanks
  8. Good morning and Happy New year to all of you! I noticed that recently, Lync is offered as an online solution as opposed to the original method of downloading and installing Lync server onto your existing server. It seems it is offered via the Office 365 platform. Does anyone know any further info on this as I would be very keen on trialling this out for the admin staff in my school. I can see it providing an easy and effective method to quickly communicate between offices and send documents a little faster than creating emails, uploading and sending. Capita, our software supplier are only able to supply us with the original solution which is the software which would need installing onto server. But we would rather look into the online based method. Capita have suggested that I visit this site: Office 365 Education This is more of a generic site and doesn't help with pricing or options on where to purchase from. We are currently part of LGFL 2.0 and we use LGFL Mail which does not integrate with Office 365 or Lync. Any help and suggestions would be most appreciated!
  9. Super, sounds like it is just what we need. Thanks for your help
  10. Thanks had not come across this one. Yes, I found this one when searching on the app store. I can see this will allow me to browse, but would it allow me to save files from the iPad to it? Mainly screenshots, but also maybe work from Pages? Thanks
  11. Hi there, My school has been successfully using a small bank of iPads for almost 1 year. We got them primarily to aid with assessment (so staff primarily use them) and they have worked incredibly well. Staff have taken to them so well, I am being asked for more apps and increasingly staff are asking if they are going to be able to print from the iPads as well as save work. Does anyone know how easy it would be to hook the ipads up to a shared folder on our Windows network? I can easily create a new shared folder on our RM CC4 server or HP Storage Works server which staff can access from their computer and can (hopfully) access via their iPad. Does anyone have any experience of how this can be achieved? Any help and suggestions would be really appreciated.
  12. Hi, We are using an HP ML350 G6 with Server 2008 R2 for the admin network at our school. The server has WSUS installed and has been working a treat for years. Recently, I have noticed that the admin server seems to be struggling to install updates for its self. WSUS continues to run well. The server has recently been getting stuck on updates when rebooting late at night. It happened again this morning and meant that the entire admin department were unable to log on or do any work. I had to pull the plug on the server, reboot to safe mode where it rolled back the failed driver and then rebooted in normal mode. I have logged into it and it has the follow depressing list of failed updates: The majority of these failed updates appear to be for IE versions. If I go to Windows Update, this is the list of updates waiting to go on: I have been onto application logs for Event Viewer and identified the two following as the updates which failed today: I presume these were the two which failed when I went into safe mode? The server was bounced at around 8pm last night 11/11/13 Has this happened to anyone else and have you managed to overcome this? My problem is the admin systems are used all day every day. I can only reboot remotely in the evenings and because the server keeps getting stuck on boot up trying to install updates, I can't remotely sort anything out and need to come and pull the plug.
  13. At the moment, none! But we are going to need some to link the two together. Not sure which is better, the single-mode or multimode?
  14. Hi there, I have some HP E2510-24 managed switches and need to purchase some small form-factor SFP fibre gigabit models to link the two together. Can anyone tell me which I need to get, the HP site appears to have a large number of modules, and I am unclear on which I would need.
  15. Hi thanks for your message. It was in fact a TTF (22kb).
  16. Thanks for your post, not long after my OP, I gave this a go and noticed a very odd thing: The font installed correctly, showed in Word, Excel very well, on Smart Notebook, there was a white area where the font would normally appear in the list. If I selected this white area, the font did appear to work. I responded to RM's response with the above new infomation and their support bods are still investigating!! Maybe it is just a one off with that particular font. I downloaded a fresh copy when I did the manual install so it can't be a problem with the copy of the font I had here on the network.
  17. Thanks for your posts, you are right, found out this morning QA deliver the courses. I have had a look at a few job specs or profiles for people already in employment and ITIL and PRINCE do seem to appear frequently along with some who have Microsoft Qualifications. MS do so many it is hard to know which one to go for!
  18. lol. I had not realised but apparently RM do training for PRINCE I will have to look it up but they do PRINCE2 and ITIL. Would be slightly easier to use them as we already have an account and I have been to their Oxford centre before.
  19. Hi there I am looking for a little personal guidance on where to go next with my career. Hopefully it will not sound like a CV but will give you guys an idea of where I am at and maybe where I need to aim next? I have been working in school ICT support for almost 10 years (only primary). I currently work for a large school in London and get paid moderately well. My current network has around 200 systems (I am lucky it is such a small number), we use RM CC4, Vanilla Server 2008 with Windows 7 and OSX. We have managed switches configured by me and managed wireless. I am the technical manager which means I am responsible for the ICT budget and consumables budget, technical aspects as well as staff training. Over the past few years, we have been improving on our ICT and I have been responsible for some very large purchases including tender bids. I am looking to start some sort of training as I have not undertaken any formal qualifications since finishing university. Here is what I already have: 1st Class Honours in Computer Science Cisco CCNA (but it expired last year) RM CC4 Technical Training Certificate Thinking forward, I would like to either work at a larger school in the same capacity such as a secondary (although by the sounds of it, they pay exactly the same, for more work), or alternatively, either work for a borough as a schools ICT manager or if all else fails, work in the private sector again. I thought that a Microsoft qualification of some sort would be useful, but not too sure what to go for. Or a qualification from this organisation Any advice, experiences or suggestions you could give would be greatly appreciated!
  20. Thanks very much, not too fussed about secure boot. The systems I am working on are HP Elite 8300, I am quite sure they would have secure boot on them, but not bothered just want the watermark gone! Thanks for your help
  21. Hi, I had attempted to upgrade a couple of our HP systems to Windows 8.1 however the store would not allow it saying that I may need to reinstall to 8.1. I downloaded 8.1 Pro from Microsoft Eopen (System was previously on Windows 8 Pro) I installed what I had downloaded on the system and it went on with no problems. I activated it and made sure it was fully up to date. Everything is working very well but there is an annoying corner of text on the desktop down in the right hand corner above the clock. You usuaully see if it you have a beta version. This is what it says: How can I get rid of this?
  22. Hi, I recently deployed a font called Jarman across our network via our RM CC4 platform. It has deployed with no problems which is good. However staff are now reporting that whilst it appears in the fonts drop down on Microsoft Office applications, if they look for it on their Smart Notebook Software, it is not there. I have contacted RM who say its not their problem as some fonts are designed only to work on Microsoft Word/Excel/Publisher and are not compatible with other applications. Is this true and if so, is there any other work around other than staff picking another font? Any help would be really good
  23. Hi there, I already have one HP Storage Works storage server for our network and it runs like a dream. So well, users have really started saving a lot of work to it. Recently, I needed to rebuild the raid and I have struggled to find somewhere to move all of the folders from this server to, as I don't have anything large enough on the network, not even if I add together all of our smaller NAS's. I think it is time to invest in a second server which can be used as a backup for the Storage Works server. I could go ahead and purchase another StorageWorks Server but with the HDDs inculded, it would cost a fortune. Can anyone recommend a cheaper HP model which can take high capacity hdd's which don't nececarrily need to be super fast as users won't be benefiting from using them? Maybe something like this from Misco? HP DL380e Gen8 Dual Processor Capable / Intel Xeon E5-2407 / 4GB / No Hard Drive / Rack Server / 3 Year Warranty (470065-719) - www.misco.co.uk I am suggesting HP as I have used them for years, their warranty service is super and I am yet to have a single serious problem.
  24. Hi, I am currently running the following vbs script on Logon, but I am getting an error: The error is as follows: Permission denied 'GetObject' Code: 800A0046 The line in question is: Set objWMIService = GetObject("winmgmts:\\" & strComputer & "\root\cimv2") I am logging in as a pupil. Could it be that they don't have the right access levels to run this vbs script? Any help would be great!
