Hi, really confused by what is causing this issue.. We are running server 2016 as our DC with Google Chrome set as default. Users do have access to Edge browser via a taskbar shortcut. Some users, when clicking on any browser, get nothing opening up, and the only way to rectify this issue is to log them off, delete their roaming profile and then re-create. This issue seems to be random and goes away for a period of time once a profile is re-created. Has anyone else had this issue and found a workaround? Loss of internet is not the end of the world, but for this school, their MIS is completely web based so it causes real disruption if they have to wait for me to come and get them to log off so I can re-create their profile.

Hi, We have a 200mbps fibre line provided by Virgin. Recently the line was chewed underground by hungry rats. It was re-instated by Virgin by way of splicing the cable. Would this have any effect on our line speed? We can upgrade to a max of 500mbps. I can't say I performed many speed tests prior to the damage caused by the rats as it always seemed more than sufficient.

It is a real pain. I used DSIM to create a Default Associations XML (once I had configured defaults). I set up an enforced Group Policy object just for this, but still it refuses to work both with images or PDFs. The guide you linked to is helpful, but I really need to do this over Group Policy as we have Windows 10 stations everywhere and it could take some time to implement if not through Group Policy. Hi there, I am finding that users on our network are unable to open images. If they open an a jpg/jpeg, they are presented with the following error: "You'll need a new app to open this ms-paint". Ideally, I would like images to open in Photos, or even Microsoft Office 2010 Picture manager. How can this be achieved via Group Policy?

Would I need to turn this off on the printer if it is on?

I am having some issues with deploying printers from our server 2016 to our Windows 10 stations. The school is really simple... One shared network printer in a corridor. There is then one network printer in the main office for the receptionist. ... could't it be an easier setup?! Windows 10 seems to have other ideas. I have set up a basic policy to deploy the shared printer to all client computers: The policy is deploying without an issue, however, the receptionist's printer is showing on all of the client computers when users log in. And sometimes, it is even the default. There is obviously some sort of network discovery going on. Does anyone know how I can stop this? Also, not sure how PDF printer is getting set as default? The network printer is HP Color LaserJet CP4005, the offending receptionist printer is named NP16A8862.

Not heard of that before. As far as I can see from how it has been set up, they are not local admins, just part members of Remote Desktop Users and Teaching Staff global security group. Is there any way I can easily check they are 100% not a local admin?

Yes, if I try from another client or even the frdc server, I just get "The connection was denied because the user account is not authorise for remote log-in. I have just re-checked on AD, the user I am trying to log in as is a member of Remote Desktop Users. What I am finding is that a lot of the client computers do not have any Remote Desktop Users listed in System settings. If I add the security groups manually to a computer, and then try again, it works. But this is very time consuming. Is it possible to do this via a policy to all stations?

Thanks, I am quite sure we have the very latest. We have server 2016 and I used the Nov16 version of 10. There don't seem to be any new updates for it on Windows Update.

Hi there, The school I am working with has used Ranger 8.0 for a number of years to control users and permissions. I am noticing with their new Windows 10 systems that staff are able to install whatever they like onto a system and they are not being prevented from doing so or being asked for an admin password. What is strange is that once staff log out, if I log in, I am unable to find the software on Programs and Features. Does anyone know how best I can lock this down? Each teacher user is a member of the following: Remote Desktop Users Teaching Staff Group - Teaching Staff Group is a global security group I created to group them all together for desktop redirection etc. I have checked the ranger permissions and TeachingStaffGroup has C and Q drives set to illegal. If a user even tries to open C, it will close down the explorer so I am not sure how this is even allowing them to install the software in the first place as they don't have access to C. Also their personal S drives do not have any software installed into them.

Hi there, I am trying to change the logon background for all of our Windows 10 stations via active directory. I have set up a policy for this with the following configured: Computer Config>Policies>Windows Settings>Administrative Templates>Control Panel/Personalization>Force a specific default lock screen and logon image: Path to lock screen image: \\server\applic$\Wallpapers\LockScreen.jpg. The policy is enforced, all computers are gpupdated, but none of them are showing the background, despite about 5 reboots and 48 hours: Does anyone have any ideas?

As an example, what I would like to do, is be able to log in as a teacher user, on their own computer, so I can check that their settings are coming up as expected. I have added the teacher users security group to a GPO I created. I configured it in Computer Configuration>Policies>Windows Settings>Local Policies/User Rights Assignment>Allow logon through Terminal Services> Enabled for Builtin\Remote DesktopUsers, domain.internal\TeachingStaffGroup, Everyone. I have forced GPUpdate on many stations, but still it does not work. For reference, I am running server 2016 with Windows 10 clients.

There is a useful remote powershell command which allows you to defrag a remote system: Get-WmiObject win32_volume -filter "driveletter='c:'" -ComputerName computer-name-here | Invoke-WmiMethod -Name Defrag This works quite well, but could take a while to do as you would need to manually enter in the computer name each time. Does anyone have any ideas on how I could make this quicker? Also, would be good if there is a way to see progress or get confirmation that the command went through - I am assuming it is working as I didn't get a red error text reply after hitting return. I changed this earlier: IIS Manager > Application Pools > WsusPool > Advanced Settings... > Private Memory Limit (KB) = 40000002. Restart application pool Changed from 1843200kb to 40000002. Not sure if that is what you are referring to? So far, so good.

I found we were getting both Store and IE on the task bar.
