Hi there, We have a brand new in box iMac (core i5-2400S, 8gb ram, 21.5 inch). It is obviously quite old now and not the thinner current version, but brand new. It is model A1311 (EMC 2428) I found quite a few youtube videos showing how to convert its old HDD to a SSD or how to add an additional SSD in near the CD/DVD drive. All of these videos had links to where to buy the products, but sadly, most of those links no-longer work as the demand for such kits has probably dried up what with this being an older model. Can anyone point me in the right direction? I only have the one iMac, but it is in such pristine condition, it seems silly not to make the most of it and get it beefed up and future proofed for an individual user to use.

That is interesting, how did you manage that? At the moment, I just have Windows 10 1703 as a WDS deployment image - no other config just the OS. It installs very well and is what I have used for all of our systems tbh.

Hi there, Does anyone have a good way to be able to wake on lan Windows 10 client computers without having to supply the device mac address? Life is so easy on RM CC4, you can just go on to the RMMC console and shutdown, restart or wake computers. For my vanilla setups, I am starting to find it increasingly difficult to power things on when not physically on site. I found a few Microsoft articles where you can use PowerShell, but you need both the device IP and mac address. This is fine, but quite a faff. Has anyone found an easier way?

Ok 5 years is not bad. Dell have just come back to me with a quote for their 70" C7017T display. It would be around £1983.28 before vat. I wonder if any schools have used this. It comes with 3 year warranty for that price.

65" is not too bad, we could work with that. What sort of warranty period would you get on them?

They look nice, but the only issue with these is that they appear to be just 55" in size, which is not all that big. I think my TV at home is that size. The staff currently have the luxury of a 70inch smart board. I think they would really moan if they were replaced with 55inch ones.

Thanks everyone for your input. Your comment in particular is very valid, as I have seen the Avaya system in use in so many other places, but they obviously have a telephone management company who are more reliable - got to be careful what I say online. I very much agree with your views. I had considered (and suggested to our head) that we could look to get a new company in to take our Avaya system and set it up correctly, but it is looking, in the long run, like it would be easier to start a fresh - such a big waste of money. We are very pressured on time for this project, and don't have any recommendations for local, London based companies we could use. The current wiring in place for these phones is utterly horrific, whereas my network cabling is all Cat 6 and ready to go with minimal work required. Don't forget, from my OP, we share this system with another school, which does make the matter somewhat more complicated, as if we did decide to use what we have, we would have to purchase a new Avaya controller system and have everything re-configured. By the time you factor all of this in, the cost is getting closer to what we would pay for a brand new Cisco solution. The Cisco solution we are looking at is provided by Atomwide (which for London schools), is a very safe bet. People managing a system who actually understand it, and implement and manage it as you would expect. My only issue with this sort of solution is the service charges which are charged per handset. I have never seen any mention of service charges on our Avaya systems, so it seems these Cisco fully VOIP systems do have these additional costs. The difficulty with this sort of solution is that the more phones you get, the more money it costs per year in the quarterly service charges. But at least we would be paying for a system that would actually work, unlike what we have at present. At the moment, our quarterly service charge would be around £1080 per year. If anyone has any London based telephone company recommendations, please do let me know!

Do you have any experience of using these? Can't say we had the best of experiences with our current Smart boards. Getting an engineer to come and look at them became impossible when Steljes went bust. Not sure I am all that confident with their products anymore after encountering so many issues.

Hi there, I have six Smart SBX885ix interactive boards I would like to replace with some display screens - the ones which do not use projectors and lamps. I have a couple of requirements... I need the replacement to be compatible with Smart and Smart Notebook (as staff have so much of their work in this format) These current boards are 78" wide. Ideally, I would be looking at the replacement being of a similar size. Ideally, I want something which has a relatively good warranty on it. Ideally five years or at least the assurance it is not going to blow within a couple and cost a lot to get it repaired or replaced. Does anyone have any ideas on what I should be looking at?

Thanks Ryan, I think the staff like it as it allows them to easily create print outs using the wizard, so they can put multiple images onto one sheet. If I put on Irfanview, I wonder if Windows 10 would automatically use it by default?

Hi there, not too sure how best to proceed here. We have a poorly managed and looked after Avaya VoIP system, except that it is not currently running as a proper VoIP system. The company who have implemented the system are not the greatest and as such, we want to go elsewhere. We have quite a few Avaya one-X handsets and then better models in the main offices where the switchboard comes through. Sadly, the above system, had nothing to do with me and was a project managed by the site manager? Bit odd. Now we are looking at a proper VoIP solution, it has fallen into my remit and I currently have budget assigned to this project which would enable me to get one of the new snazzy Cisco VoIP systems that Atomwide supply (we are currently an Atomwide broadband customer too). As Atomwide now have CSS Technology 2 Framework, I would not need to go out and get more quotes, however, I don't like the fact that each Cisco phone has an ongoing quarterly licencing fee. Can anyone tell me if it would be possible to use our existing hardware (just the handsets), buy another VoIP controller for Avaya phones and get it set up again by a more competent company? Without going into the details too much, we own our handsets and the system the phones run on, but that system is owned 50% by us and 50% by another school. Any help would be great as this is all a little new to me.

Unfortunately, the partition I made for our WSUS folder was not large enough and with the folder currently over 300gb, no end of clean up wizards and cutting down on the sort of updates I download has helped. I have made a new partition on our server and used the following guide to 'move' the WSUS folder containing the update files to the new folder in our new partition. All has gone well, though it took some time, when I checked the server this morning, the command prompt was showing the following: However, obviously Microsoft's idea on what 'move' means, is different to mine as the original location is still completely full of the update files. I have checked the sizes and the folder size for the new folder is slightly bigger than the old one. I have checked the log file for the 'move' and it shows the following: Does anyone know if I am now safe to delete the old folder? The Microsoft guide does not mention anything about this. Thanks for your post, I think that maybe was a one off error. What I am finding on many other machines is that there just doesn't seem to be Photos as an app you can open. Teaching staff are able to 'Open With', but their options are limited.. If I select Open With: If I go with what is currently the option, this is the error I get on all the other systems I have tested it on... I can open the images with Paint, but obviously, this is not really ideal at all. Any ideas?

Hi there, I have come across an issue with opening pictures using Photos on our new Windows 10 systems. When you click on any jpg, jpeg etc, you get the following message: "you'll need a new app to open this ms-paint". It doesn't give you an option to open-with unless you are an administrator. I am using Ranger 8 on Windows Server 2016. Does anyone have anything I can put into Group Policy to allow Photos to be used? I have already set Default File Associations as follows but it has not made any difference.

Hi there, Thanks very much for your detailed reply, very helpful, particularly the links. In answer to your question; my SSD is an actual SSD but it will be woefully small. It is a SanDisk SSD Plus Solid State Drive (120gb). I have an HP EliteDesk G1 800 which has this SSD as the OS drive and then a 500g Seagate conventional drive for My Docs redetection (has about 400gb of pics on it). I like your suggestion, I have used ESXi quite a lot (I have the free edu version of that too), so this is definitely a potential option. Hi there, I have got quite into using VMWare Workstation player on my desktop system to create server and client systems to mess about with and learn from. My desktop system has 32gig of ram and an i7 processor, so is well equipped but it runs an SSD hard drive which is not ideal for the virtual images. It does have a 500gb standard secondary drive, but this has lots of images stored on it. Can anyone suggest something external that would be suitable? Presumably, if it had fast enough network connectivity, I could access the VMWare virtual images stored on it from another system, should my main one be busy doing something else? Note: I am using the free version of VMware.

I presume there is no way to disable this alert without disabling any future power loss and power re-connection alerts? I am getting hundreds of these emails per day at the moment. We know there are power issues, and the electrician is on the case, but would rather not have to completely turn off my alerts, would rather tailor them to just tell me about on or off power issues. It doesn't look like the report can be quite that binary.

Hi there, I have a 2016 server and I am having an absolute nightmare, trying to share some of my printers such that AirPrint iPads can print via the server. Has anyone been able to achieve this? I have installed Bonjour, installed the correct drivers, but when I use an iPad, nothing is showing up in the print options. The iPads are on the right network (same one as the server). Sadly, the printers in question are not AirPrint compatible, hence my trying to do it through the server, rather than just switching on AirPrint on each individual printer and not needing to share it out via server. Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks both, good idea about the monitor too, though I would need a KVM ideally as would be a nightmare switching VGA cables between the different appliances. This was the approach I was thinking of going for as per the APC guide. It is called Redundant in their terminology... These are some of their other options... Parallel-UPS Configuration: Advanced: There is also Single, though that speaks for its self. My only concern with these setups is the obvious... if the power goes down, unless all network switches are powered on via the UPS also, what is the point of the shutdown commands going out of the UPS devices, as the network is down, so the servers will not receive this communication. My UPS devices are on my management vLan, which would mean I can either receive the shutdown signal via our curriculum, admin or management vLans (Admin and Curric are able to communicate with management). So I may need to look at adding an additional NIC to each server and then ensuring that a switch is connected to the UPS that has all management connections on it.

Hi there, I have two racks with 9 48 port switches, one router and one firewall and currently Three x Dual PSU HP Servers Two x Single PSU HP Server We have two rack mounted APC 1500 UPS units which have three 'groups' on each UPS. Groups one and two have two plugs per group and group 3 has four. Here is a picture of the back of one of the units. My main question is... would there be any benefit in wiring the dual PSU servers to both UPS boxes? So that if the power were to fail and one UPS also failed, the second would keep these larger servers running? My only concern is how the server would know to turn off as it wouldn't know which UPS to listen to? Alternatively, does anyone know if these UPSs are able to be linked together to form one unit so to speak? I have tried joining the Serial Leads of each UPS together with an ethernet lead, but it has not helped. Can't find anything in the manual re this.

Hi everyone. Really struggling to find a guide on installing WebDav for a server running IIS 10. Has anyone managed to do it before? It seems our server is too new?

Thanks everyone for your input. For now, I am going to use WebDav. Does anyone have access to the install guides for WebDav? Never installed it before. I have a 2016 server running IIS version 10. Have found older guides, but having trouble working it all out when using a newer version of IIS.
