I've been asked to investigate the possibilities of creating DVDs for each year group of the school - in particular the senior years that are about to leave. The school are planning to sell these DVDs to the pupils, although they want to have music playing in the background (chart music at the time etc). My question is how to ensure we meet copyright royalty restrictions on the music? As we are planning to sell these DVDs to the pupils, what type of license do we require to enable us to sample music throughout the DVD? Anyone got previous experience of doing such a task? thanks in advance

Its a pain here... I'm meant to start work at 8.30am, but pupils and teachers are often here from 7.45am.. no point really coming in early though as the master key is held in the filing cabinet of someone who doesn't come in till 8.30! Home time is 4.15, although a lot of the staff / pupils are still here gone 6pm, which is annoying again for peace and quiet!

Officially: 8.30 -> 4.15 here (Mon-Thurs) 4.00pm on Fridays. In reality: 8.00 -> 4.40 usually, and sometimes it's pushing 8 or later when I'm leaving. Overtime is not paid in wages, but evening work officially in time in leiu... most of the extra work though I don't keep a strict record of so I summarise it and take off as extra during school holidays - probably should start keeping a record as I'm sure I'm short changing myself!

Further to this... anyone know how to stop the annoying "does not respond" messages when a workstation / laptop on your known list fails to connect as it is not switched on? I have all the computers in the school listed on my RM tutor groups, and whenever I connect last thing in the evening to check all computers are off, it quickly becomes annoying! Thanks

Dammit every year I would love to come across (from N.Ireland) to BETT but never get chosen to travel to it... this 2 x colleagues going... 1 "network manager" and 1 teacher.... in the past random department members go for whatever reason! It's ok though... I'm not bitter! (mmm yeah right!)

My Astra (2007) requires me to turn the wheel to full lock & gain access through the wheel arch (as already described... isn't it a complete pain?! The country roads round here that I drive on make it such a messy job) Unless you have an older astra, in through the wheel arch you have to go! I'll be paying Halfrauds next time to save me the hassle!

Thanks for your response - I checked the system32 folder & found an accessibility problem with getting into that folder. Resolved the issue & its working ok now! Regards Steven

User has got ActivStudio3 installed on their windows Vista laptop. When they open ActivStudio it shows "Select an ActivStudio profile" - when any option, for example Foundation is selected, an error appears with the following information: Run-time error 339 Component comdlg32.ocx or one of it's dependencies not correctly registered: a file is missing or invalid. Any ideas?! Thanks

The students here seem always amazed & in complete awe when they see me out shopping in town. To the extent where a few girls stopped, pointed, and told each of their friends "he works in my school!" The cinema is another area where it's a surprise for them to see me.

We have a number of Lapsafe trolleys at the school - and with just moving into a new building I want to protect the trolley edges to help stop scraping doors / walls etc. I'm looking at getting foam protection strips for the edges, something like: The Packaging Store: Foam L-Profile Edge Protection but I can't seem to find any in low quantities... does anyone else have any ideas, and if you also protect your trolley edges, what do you use? Here in Northern Ireland our schools are finishing up in the next few days.... but here amongst all the excitement it's all nice & quiet.... why I hear you ask? Because although it's the end of term, rooms have to be vacated for new build, teachers spending all day packing etc.... we have very few DVDs being shown / music being played throughout the school. Yes, as part of our packing we had to remove most of the speakers, and data projectors from around the school. I could have been much more evil though - my colleague suggested de-allocating Win DVD etc from the workstations to stop having to go look at DVD drives etc! Didn't go down that route though!

Strange thought I'm just having... how many members of staff in your school do you actively talk to, and is it about anything not related directly to work? I get on very well with technical / non-teaching staff, cleaning staff & the building supervisors.... also have a good laugh with the office admin staff etc. Teaching staff members - I always go out of my way to say hello, smile etc as I pass them in the corridor, as they come into my room etc. Some staff in their own special way would dip their heads & walk past in silence, but I guess you get that anywhere? Do you find you mostly have to initiate a chat, even if it's just to say hi?

Xmas gift count so far (from staff): Cards x 9 Wine x 1 Chocs x 3 Bonus from staff fund x 1 Unknown gift x 2 That is all just personal gifts / cards to me - there is a few more presents bought for the whole department, like chocs + biscuits etc.

Do you have school detentions? Bored kids in class?! I think our classes count them now and again - more hands = less work! Edit: ah ok!

I try to do jobs as soon as I can (prioritising as much as possible) but nothing grates on me more than: me: "I'll have to take the computer away, fix it and return - should be in a day or so" staff member: ok then. I hate it when people tut, sigh, or roll their eyes when I am trying to help them.... I particularly hate it when pupils come in saying "since you're doing nothing can you do this" and when they tut that gets me really going! grr! I've pulled so many up about that!

I'm finishing here around 4pm - heading home, getting dinner then heading to bed for the evening (firework noise permitting of course!) Start work (petrol station) at 11pm tonight & work till 7am. By myself as always. Thats my hallowe'en night for you!

Did I read that right? There is normally school on Saturday? Is it sports lessons etc, or proper classroom lessons? Scary thought that... Mon-Fri is bad enough!

Can anyone recommend a way to force windows xp laptops to shut down after a certain time? I notice Vista has the option to assign an action to shut down the machine when the laptop lid is closed - unfortunately this wonderful option is not included in Windows XP. I've tried a lot of shut down programs but they don't work once the user has logged off (which is where I want the shut down to kick in). I have also tried a batch file which shuts down after a count down but this also fails to work once the user has logged out. Using managed service Northgate so my options are limited cheers

What are the caretakers reasons for refusing the lift out of interest? I think two can play that game though - next time his computer monitor breaks & he / she needs a replacement .... lol! I HATE lifting those 17" CRT monitors - especially when for some unknown reason they are stored on the floor so it's even more strain lifting them up. I barely touch them if I can help it these days let alone if I were pregnant. I've not been given heavy lifting training - but I do the usual basics like bent knees etc - but even still I would sometimes get twinges in my lower back for a few days after lifting these monitors or base units.
