[ms office - 2016] Deploying Office 365 vs Office 2016
JRowley replied to disk's topic in Office Software
Device-based Authentication was introduced specifically for this reason. Here's a blog post on it which explains. We haven't formally decided yet but would prefer to receive the latest feature updates if possible, it just means greater parity between what people will be using at home and on site. Some of the new features look great too. -
You can't easily change it via GP to my knowledge, it's far simpler to change the folder redirection. The customisation of quick access is difficult, here's about the only information on it: https://blogs.technet.microsoft.com/supportingwindows/2015/12/21/users-cant-access-the-desktop-and-other-resources-through-quick-access-in-windows-10/ If you open the file - "%AppData%\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Recent\AutomaticDestinations\f01b4d95cf55d32a.automaticDestinations-ms" you will find that it is filled with direct paths and specific shares. On top of that the file is clearly not intended to be modified, so distributing this file isn't very practical. It's been suggested you could configure quick access on a specific user and then distribute the modified file, don't know how true that is but having seen the content of the file that seems unlikely.

Searching active directory (no results)
JRowley replied to NickiJames's topic in How do you do....it?
You're welcome, glad you got to the bottom of it. Certainly an interesting problem, I've never experienced it myself. Group policy can be particularly complex so don't worry about looking in the wrong one, pretty sure we've all been there at one point or another . -
Searching active directory (no results)
JRowley replied to NickiJames's topic in How do you do....it?
Hi Nicki, Great to hear you are perusing your passion and have started an apprenticeship in IT. As for your problem, you might want to look into this: Maximum size of Active Directory searches It's possible that there is a Group Policy Object which has been set for the OU your account is in which limits the number of search results to 0. It seems unlikely to me, but worth looking into. Follow the gpedit guide and see if the number is set to 0. -
I've never done it but, this guide should do the trick - https://www.windowsmanagementexperts.com/windows-10-2016-ltsb-server-2016-kms-activation/windows-10-2016-ltsb-server-2016-kms-activation.htm You'll also need the 'Windows Srv 2012R2 DataCtr/Std KMS for Windows 10' KMS key from VLSC.

Anyone know how to disable conversations in Microsoft Classroom?
JRowley replied to adhutton's topic in Cloud Services
As the classroom is effectively an O365 Group I don't believe you can disable/prevent access to the conversation area as it's a core area. That being said, I can't personally see any issues with having it enabled. If a student, or multiple students are stupid enough to discuss something inappropriate in it then the teacher(s) attached to the classroom will have a complete written record of it. We're only using it with a single sixth form group as a trial but haven't had any issues with that, typically the only person to start a conversation is the teacher. -
Qualcomm's Snapdragon 835 to support Windows 10 and run Win32 apps!
JRowley replied to Arthur's topic in Windows 10
Given Microsoft have openly posted this on their own YouTube channel should be a sign of intention to bring it to market, otherwise it would be buried in a technet post somewhere. -
Never seen that before honestly, it doesn't look like my tenant was effected. This sort of thing can happen with any cloud platform though really, have to say that issues like this on O365 are pretty rare. Issues that are reported on the service health dashboard tend to be very specific parts of functionality and normally only when used in a specific way.

We recently encountered an intermittent network fault which came down to some old Cat5 patch leads, replaced them with new Cat5E and it was resolved. It can sometimes be that simple.

Looks like it wont be fully resolved until next week. -

It's the same as this issue found on Wednesday. It's taking quite a long time to resolve. -
Also experiencing the first issue. It's an issue on both Outlook 2010 and 2016 clients but not Online. It's looking like an Exchange Online issue to me perhaps to do with hybrid exchange?

Yeah they U-Turned, mentioned it on my post on Page 2.

So basically what is happening is that a pop up is appearing saying that it is a recommended upgrade, and now closing it schedules the upgrade. However closer to the time it pops up again reminding you of this with this line "Click here to change upgrade schedule or cancel scheduled upgrade", which is fairly obvious. There is also a popup from the taskbar which appears from time to time with the same link and a 15 minute final notice that the upgrade is about to take place once again with the same link. You have plenty of opportunity to abort the upgrade. Edit: Microsoft have since U-Turned over it, so this is no longer the case.

Don't really see this as a major issue, if Apple did this it would be heralded as enabling users to get the best out of their machine, but because it's Microsoft they're dooming everyone.

Microsoft to move out of the education market?
JRowley replied to Dave_O's topic in Licensing Questions
We wont have schools in the future nevermind paper-less offices, teachers will teach students from home. -

Still no word on this recording? It's been almost a week now. -

Well, that really depends doesn't it, if they convert half their physical servers to cloud and the other half to virtual then you could reduce the spec needed of the virtual hosts relative to virtualising the lot. It's not likely to be a huge difference, but would be a saving of some sort I would have thought. -

It really does depend on your circumstances I think, for those who haven't gone virtual yet and have a lot of physical servers there could be reduced running costs, not a huge saving by any means, but a potential saving. -

I think I need to watch it again honestly, missed the whole migration portion which appears to have been the important part. -
It's just this A column is a set of 6 cells, each cell is the size of a small tile, so 6 cells is the same as 3 regular tiles.
-
You have to manually change the .xml column count I seem to recall, these lines are relevant: Specifically the first one will be set to 2 even if you set it up to only have 1.
-
I have not tried it at log on, it may not have any effect after the user has been created. The script seems to either change every user globally, or the default. But like I said I haven't tried it at log on, or start up for that matter, give it a go if you get chance.
-
Perhaps it's because we are doing it a different way, you are deploying via GPO where as we use a PowerShell script to import the xml. Here's the script: Import-StartLayout -LayoutPath "" -MountPath $env:SystemDrive\ Here's the XML we configured, it's nothing complex as we just did this for a test, but you get the idea: For our tests this is deployed as effectively the final step in our SCCM task sequence. It ends up looking a bit like this:
