  1. We have a 450 client, flat network that is split amongst 8 HP Procurve mostly GL41xx series switches. the GL are all connected by fibre transceivers. I need to get some vlan management onto the system to manage this traffic, improve network performance and create a guest wireless network. The core switches is a 4108GL with fibre transcievers to the other site switches. Is this a good enough core switch to manage the network appropriately or should i be looking at something more up to date? Thinking of costs, will a newer switch with its specified fibre transceivers, talk the the fibre tranceivers in the existing 4100 switches? or will i be looking at an expensive upgrade? Can anyone recommend a reseller for this type of project? Cheers
  2. How comprehensive is the internet filtering? Is it comparable to that of Bloxx/Smoothwall, or would you need these in addition?
  3. New to this, and am injecting my first driver using this guide. Once the changes have been committed is there a particular command to get the Boot.wim moved from C:\wim back to its original location or will straight forward copy/move do?
  4. Have there been any developments in this discussion recently? we are looking for an SMS solution, but with some of the solutions requiring 3 year buy-ins, we are nervous about whether these partner products will still be operational/supported in three years?
  5. Like the look of this booking system. I have got the WAMP setup on a server, but my knowledge of php is poor. I have bookit available as a project and have gone to the first page and changed the admin password. My next step is to go to settings, but when i try, i get this error; Fatal Error: Maximum execution time of 60 seconds exceeded in C:\wamp\www\bookit\system\codeigniter\common.php on line 383 Any ideas?
  6. We virtualised our Systems in the summer and have reduced the amount of hardware servers required. I would prefer collection. Therefore we have the following good working Rack mount servers for sale. (rails included) Server1 a G3 HP ML380 rack mount with rails. I think this is 6U in a rack. It is a Dual Xeon 3.GHZ with 4GB Ram. It has a HP LTO1 Sure store tape drive (all working). 4 x 147GB 10k SCSI drives. We also upgraded the on board RAID card to a Smart array 6400. As well as on board dual Gbit we added a NC7170 Dual Port Gbit card. This comes with redundant PSU. I can't be fussed with trying to courier these & i have no suitable packaing, so its collection only please
  7. Great stuff. I will take a look at this tomorrow.
  8. Salamander here. Salamander would get my vote as being the most successful software solutions we have deployed in this school. Not only are students and staff created in sych with SIMS start dates, it can create maintain and synchronise your class email enabled security groups. I can't think this would be possible any other way with our 600 odd classes and poor -SIMS administrator to IT communciation. Richard is an absolute star too.
  9. Apologies if this is in the wrong forum, but this may be where the most experience lies. We have a small barding facility (about 80 students), and we would like to get a system that records students details, reminders for student appoinments, medical information etc. The system needs to have some sort of diary functionality. has anyone come across anything that would do this? I have been looking at sharepoint, but i would imagine i would need to do a lot of customisation, and i do not have an extensive sharepoint skillset. Anyone suggest anything? cheers
  10. This is happening on all our newly built Win7 PC's. iS there a more elegant solution than having to reset the locale (even though it is correct and set to uk?) Is this the same for everyone that installs SIMS on Win7?
  11. Is there a simple way to publish target & current grades directly to students? We record all this assesment data and retrospectivley produce a report to parents,...well how about a web view to students in real time so that they can view and reflect on their current performance? Is there already a solution to this, becuase i can't find one anywhere?
  12. We have a project where governors are wanting to create a cafe with Internet access for Sixth formers. The build is about to commence and they want me to provide wireless internet access so that students can bring in their own laptops and mobile devices and access the net. I have two problems. We have a good filtering solution as the proxy that requires domain credentials. Whilst i am happy to instruct students how to set this up on a laptop, on trials every time you open a new browser window, it will ask for them again. The next option is to use the RM safteynet filtering solution, which may be too restrictive for what the target audience 17-18 years olds in a relaxed social environment. My other option is to bring in a seperate broadband connection purely to meet this need. I would then need to configure a software solution to audit and record all activity. Not something that i think is going to be cheap or easy. Has anyone tackled a similar project, and how dod you manage it? Cheers
  13. This looks great! Would students still be able to receive email from outside of the school? I think we have a couple of times (work experience etc) when we may need external school sites to be able to reply to students? Is there a work-around maybe? Thanks
  14. How are you guys finding V4 with the exceptions now? I have just been through two weeks of hell with unresponsive DC's. I have just found this post.
  15. Is there a good Uk based reseller /demo team for Papercut? Someone we can talk to and possibly get some sort of presentation to our SMT?
  16. We are having really slow logons at the moment. The client event logs show an error of 529 & 537 for every logon, even though the user still manages to login, although very slowly. Typical mesasge is; Logon Failure: Reason: Unknown user name or bad password User Name: Domain: xxxxx Logon Type: 2 Logon Process: User32 Authentication Package: Negotiate Workstation Name: class1-14 & Logon Failure: Reason: An error occurred during logon User Name: student Domain: xxxxx Logon Type: 11 Logon Process: User32 Authentication Package: Negotiate Workstation Name Class1-14 Status code: 0xC000005E Substatus code: 0x0 Logins taking about 15 minutes at the worst times of the day. Anyone come across this?
  17. Sometimes it is used to assess what can be achieved/solved by the post. In my experience of education, Headteachers hate to commit funding to additional (non-replacement) posts. Sometimes it possible to compromise and be allowed to advertise a pre-determined short contract. The thinking being that the headteacher only has to find the funding for the initial short term, but that the instigator can gain evidence of what has been achived and maybe fight to make that post permenant. If i found myself in the situation mentioned above i would go out of my way to make myself indispensable. EDIT. Just noticed this may not be an education post. The logic may still apply though.
  18. I was intrigued by the "Media Technician" comment earlier, and have just spoken with LEA re; job descriptions; A Media Technician does not exist as a post in our LEA. An AV technician post does not exist within the structure either. Their suggestion, is to adopt the policies of other secondary schools and to advetise for an IT Technician, but to write in context statements that include all the AV/Media work you will be expecting them to do. I know what some of you are thinking...an IT techncian shouldn't be asked to do any of them! So, is anyone else in the same position where they take on AV & Media work? Do you refuse, or like me, does the historical structure of IT Support mean you take on lots of things, that aren't technically in your job description. Personally, i quite like my Tech and I being involved in the AV/Media work, and i try to be accommodating in most things when i feel i can be helpful, on the JD or not.
  19. Image or, perception of the IT support team effectiveness is massively important. Do not underestimate it.
  20. This is a far better example of what i was trying to say. Personally, I feel our school would benefit from an approachable individual, that had a can-do attitude, and was enthusiastic about the ICT tools in the learning environment irrespective of qualifications.
  21. Ok, I see from that statement right there, we have completely differing views of our roles, and i'll leave it there:) ...but just for the record, my wording was; '..had an enthusiasm for video production, website maintenance etc...'
  22. Differing views, i have had great techncians, who never needed to know the OSI model, to be able to go about their work in school. I can't even think of a situation when it would have been useful. Agreed, but i don't care if you don't know how the school prioritises its support, as long as you can be told and apply that model. Disagree, we have enterprise class systems, and i am about to virtualize the 10 Proliants into VMware this year. I class myself as 3rd line support. My technician/s would be 1st/2nd line, anyone showing an aptitude to progress i am willing to invest in. I don't want a technician to be locked in an IT office all day, i don't think this helps our image at all. What? 'Fiddle with videos...? Someone that engages with the current trends in ICT would be how i would have phrased it. who said that to have one skill meant forsaking all others?
  23. I would love to employ a media tech, however i can't because (i have been told by lea) it does not exist within the LEA framework.
  24. Seen a few posts lately asking for advice on questions that potential IT support technicians may be asked at interview, and i have been suprised by some of the topics discussed. As operating systems and software have developed, i feel the technician role has moved somewhat. As an NM, if i were seeking a Support technician; turning up promptly to get a laptop and data projector working, in focus and nicely dispalyed, is worth far more to me than quoting the OSI model and its various functions. I don't know if its just me, but some of the suggested questions here don't seem to have much common sense. (sorry!) The question about how would you prioritise these two jobs; the headteacher can't print, or a class full of students can't logon. Now, i know the answer to this, but i wouldn't expect anyone without an understanding of basic education values to instantly know the answer, and it isn't something that couldn't be explained in 2 minutes, hardly a deal-breaker. For me, i would rather feel confident that someone had excellent communication skills, was able to manage an inventory, was able to source competitive pricing on consumables, dealt with people in a friendly and helpful manner, was enthusiastic about IT in the classroom, had an enthusiasm for video production, website maintenance etc. I think we apply far too much weight to understanding AD Schema, OSI, MCE, MCSA/E CCNA qualifications (i cannot remeber the last time i had to use any of the knowledge from my CCNA let alone a technician) Sorry for the rant
