  1. Does anyone use these 17" privacy filters that sit in the monitor recess and narrow the angle of view, so that students at adjacent desks cant view whats on the persons next to thems screen? Prices i am getting so far are near on the price of the monitor itself!
  2. Ahh of course. Access reports! Many thanks.
  3. Hello, We have been collecting student records, via a web form into a CSV file. The data is things like 'Name' 'Opinion A' 'First Choice' 'second choice' etc. A member of staff now wants these 'rows' printed & presented in an easy to read format with the column headers included. Is there anything free that i can use that would accomplish this, or do i need to buy something in? I did try a simple Office Mail Merge, but it didn't give me the options i would have liked. Cheers Steele
  4. I have been having real problems this last year. Gpo policies not enforcing and sometimes even reverting to the old setting. Replication does not seem to be consistent. Romaing profiles are causing issues and the backup transfer speed has got so slow, we are well into the next day before the job ends. I still have all my usual jobs to do, and get very little time to spend fixing these things, which have a knokk-on effect of adding to my never-ending list of jobs. I could do with contracting someone in with specific tasks to perform. ie; please get group policy stable and cosistent. Has anyone found a reliable contractor that doesn't cost the earth, vast experience that enjoys these sorts of challenges? I would prefer to pay for the fix, than the day rate, although i imagine that is going to be difficult. I have gone past the point of thinking i can solve this myself, i have devoted many hours into thrying fixes, and most of that time was interupted by students needing password changes, classes needing new toners, or staff wanting youtube clips downloaded... I hate schools at the moment! We are a 7 server site, 2 X Server 2003 DC's and a seperate Exchange 2007 box, on the last year of a 5 year build. (we will rebuild this summer, but its not soon enough ) Cheers
  5. Like most schools our Proxy is set as a user GPO. I am hoping to use a testing room for training purposes and have it overrule any user based proxy setting, defined by User GPO. A typical student currently logs on to a PC and is currently pointed to 'SchoolProxy:8080 as defined in our student Group policy setting. I can create an OU with a group of testbed PC's,(relating to the testing room) and i would like to apply a Machine based policy that specifies 'NEW-Schoolproxy:8080. Thus a student gets directed to a different proxy whilst they are logged into a pc in this location. I don't think this can be done by GPO, but i would love to be proved wrong Failing that, how would you achieve this, Would a registry hack get at login on these specific PC's get round it? Cheers
  6. We have managed to get round the compatability problems of Windows Movie Maker only accepting limited file formats, by getting students to record video with Canon Still camera's on the video setting, which records as AVI. Not bad results, but poor audio and certainly no good over distance. I have a budget of £200-£300 to get a a SD CARD Camcorder, but i can't tell by the reviews what file extensions they record as. We have had a couple of disaters before with a couple of camera's needing their own software installed to work with the recorded media, or having students go through hoops trying to convert the media. So does anyone know of a Flash camcorder that will play niceley with WMM, ie; save as AVI? If not how do you tackle this frustrating issue? Regards Andy
  7. Hi All, We are looking for an after school club that can over chess over the local network so that two students could participate against each other via PC. Has anyone used anything successfully that they would recommend? Cheers
  8. Many thanks. I have 80% UDP traffic to 20%TCP on my Network sample. I would imagine this should be completely the other way around? Can anyone confirm these figures are way out?
  9. I have 8 Procurve Switches on the network, and i seem to have a problem with a slow steady build up of broadcast traffic that culminates after about 7 days with switch lockups, due to too much data on the network. I have dloaded PCM and can contact and monitor all the switches. I have turned off Spannnig tree, but turned on loop-protect on the two switches that support it. When i looked at the heavy utilization of traffic i noticed that the majority was broadcast traffic, is there some tool that i could monitor the network and drag out a report of noisy host IP's? Cheers
  10. Hmmm doesn't seem to work for me either.
  11. I have many host names apparently served by the same IP address. These are all legacy PC's that have either been removed or renamed. For some reason DNS wont release them. They all still resolve, but obviously aren't contactable. In some cases i have 6 hosts with the same IP. I have tried clearing the cache and restarting DNS, is there anything else i can do? Thanks
  12. Solved! THE Procurve AP's default setting is to use its own gateway 192.x. Nothing to see here..
  13. Hello, Have just started testing a Procurve Wireless AP. I have set up WPA. From a client i can join the wireless network, and the client is receiving a school domain IP. I cannot however ping, IP or DNS name. I cannot join the Domain, and i am confused as to where to start with my toubleshooting. I will disable security and see how i get on. Are there any Domian policies that might be hindering my attempts? Cheers
  14. Thanks for the replies, I think i will look into the HTC Touch and snap models over the next few days and go from there. So do you buy into a data package? what sort of costs p/month?
  15. We have a very large site, and various wireless access points. I am looking for a way of receiving email from our on-site Exchange 2007 server, so that i don't have to go all the way back to my pc, to find that i am needed two classrooms away from the place i have just been to. School probably won't stump up for a contract phone, so are there any Smartphones or PDA's that sync via wireless to exchange? I am very niave with mobile phone developments. How do you keep in contact with email whilst your doing your rounds on site? Cheers
  16. We have 1100 Students, 130 staff. 43 printers, We budget £8000 for Toners & spares/repairs per year. The photocopy-ing is a seperate budget not managed by us.
  17. Hmmmm... I have tested CS4 P/shop on my office PC, and certainly will not be able to run it successfully on any classroom PC's. The graphic card requirements seem to be quite demanding.
  18. Did a search and didn't see this rearing its ugly head lately. This is like a train wreck waiting to happen here. Our registers look fantastic, ( after they have been tidied a week later). So, what are your plans? 1 .What product are you going to use to publish your data to parents? 2. How confident are you that the attendance data is accurate. ( In real time ) 3. What data do you plan to publish in the early stages - AM/PM reg, all lesson attendance, behaviour? Finally i haven't found a document from the DCSF that explains exactly what schools will legally be obliged to publish. Can anyone point me to anything? Cheers
  19. Thanks, Some ideas for me to get started with.
  20. I think i am going to be massively dissapointed. Would there happen to be a tool that will alert me should a new device come onto the network? I am guessing i need some sort of DHCP tool, as this would be one of the first services to acknowledge the new device? If it was realtime, even better! Would there be some way of getting DHCP to tell me when a new device is allocated an IP? Quite a few times when trawling through logs and DNS i see references to devices that i know are not mine, and these devices have since dissapeared. I am guessing someone is plugging something in somewhere.
  21. There is an Active directory agent as well now. I guess a Backup of AD would be nice to have if everything went 'pop'. Not sure if anyone knows how good it is though....
  22. All the names have been chnaged to protect the guilty! I am trying to find how to automate the referencing/ embedding of the xsl file. Any ideas?
  23. The program is a behaviour recording system. It can generate a file, such as the shortened one i have attached. I can create an xsl file that can produce a table and separate the headings into columns, but i am not sure how to make all newly produced files,- link to the xsl file.RC2009126.txt
  24. Hello, I have a program that i can automate to produce an xml report each morning. Staff would like the information contained in the page viewable as a webpage. To make any sense of the XML i have followed a guide and created an XSL page. I undertsand that if the XML page contains a reference to the XSL page then the page can be rendered correctly. The formatting will never change so the XSL can stay static. I have done all this and it works great i have a page displaying the XML nicely on a webpage. But how do i get each new, daily generated XML page to know that it has to reference the XSL page? I would like this to be autmated if possible. Is there a way of injecting the reference? Am i going about this the wrong way round? TIA
  25. To have any value, this cost needs to highlight what the uptake has been by staff and students. What percentage of staff and students use it, and how happy are they doing so? We have just had a similar conversation here. We could spend 10 - 15K on a solution that proves unpopular with teaching staff, and then sits there unused. We could employ somebody on 18K a year to implement a full moodle solution and provide training. We could buy into a solution and pay for staff training days, but surely the cost is meaningless without an understanding of how successfully the solution matched the expectations, and the overall take-up from users. We haven't gone with a solution yet,- but i have seen many!!! I have seen Sharepoint and moodle installations that the NM's and tech's love, but the staff hate, and the students don't have any reason to use it. I'm not saying this is the case for every school. But i do think each schools needs will be different. One of the most successful installations i have seen had two web developers working on it full time(£££), and another school completely outsourced the entire product and is simply bound to an annual subscription.
