Well, on Saturday I went with my wife to Twickenham to watch the Guiness Premiership Final between Leicester Tigers and Saracens. An absolutely fantastic match that had me panicking all the way to the final whistle! Then on the way back on Sunday we went into Cambridge as we've driven past loads of times but never actually been.

Thanks to working for a complete *expletive deleted* I decided to go to college and do a computer course as they seemed to be becoming more and more prevalent (I didn't own my first until 6 weeks into the course!). ONC in Computer Studies completed I then did a HNC in Computing (Software Engineering) before doing a Microsoft course and getting certified. I then got a 6 month contract to help with a roll out of 1000 PCs where I somehow managed to do a lot of stuff in the workshop and occasionally on the helpdesk. I left there to come here.

That's what I did. It's proved quite useful so far.

Ours have never worked automatically - I used to run them manually but my boss is of the opinion that as we pay the LA to do it, let them do it. Now if it is an update that we need for some reason I do it myself, if not I just wait until they get around to updating it manually.

That was my experience about 5 years ago when we merged domains - remove from admin domain, make part of new joint domain, amend ACLs as necessary.

Thanks for that - pretty much what I've heard as well. The connection speed not being upgraded by the time they are moved over could be a big issue for us as we are already maxing ours out a lot of the time. Using our existing connection to also service other buildings would not therefore be a positive step!

Although I never took the Cisco exam, I did the official CCNA course through the Open University the first time they ran the course. As well as 4 day schools at a college in Bedford where you got to use live equipment, they also had a mechanism where you could book time on their lab routers and switches which were remotely accessible.

Do your teachers only ever use the same classroom? Do they register their tutor group in a different room from where they teach? We had issues with the above as teachers would set up for their first lesson in a morning on their laptop in their teaching room and then go to their tutor room, log that user off before logging on themselves to access SIMS. They'd then return to their teaching room to discover someone had returned the favour. (There were a multitude of reasons from the teachers as to why they couldn't carry their laptops around site first thing in a morning to wherever required - some I agree were valid, others were pure laziness or "not my job syndrome"). Teachers also complained that they had to set up their laptops in a morning and lock them away securely at night. This seemed massively ironic as most of these same teachers complained that they wanted a laptop so that they could do work at home yet once they received said laptop it either never left the school premises or they thought it was purely for use at home (including partner running business, teenage son playing games, etc). We are therefore now in the final stages of reverting to how it used to be - a workstation in the classroom. The difference is that it is only for those who don't take their laptop home and if they want a workstation then they can't have a laptop as well. There isn't enough money for both and I want to ensure that those who do want a laptop to use at home have the newest (therefore fastest & lightest) model I can provide them with.

For the students or the school? I don't like RM and I've never heard of Civica but on the face of it pupils getting software at cheap prices and the school finding another revenue stream sounds like a win/win.

Does anyone out there have any experience with using The Basement, a part of RM? The Basement One of our Governors mentioned at a meeting last night that it was possible for pupils to obtain really cheap pricing for Microsoft and Adobe software with a proportion of any sales being paid to the school. Although I was massively sceptical I discovered the above website which claims to send the school 5% if total sales are over £500. Is it as simple as it sounds or too good to be true?

Wait for the official letter. Highly unlikely it would happen in a school but it has been known for people to be told they have the job and then receive a letter saying they were unsuccessful. Also, it will give you a chance to read the contract properly in case they forgot to mention something that would make you change your mind.

That explains why my trick didn't work - I was told to create my own file called autorun.inf! We have had a few cases of the W32/SillyFDC-AJ worm in school this week which I think was originally brought into school by a PGCE student ("my laptop at home is broken" turned into "my laptop at home is infested with viruses" after a few questions!). That creates an autorun.inf so we always have to use attrib after the main disinfection to remove that file.

Don't know but for me it would certainly add an extra pleasure element to an already enjoyable experience!

Haven't read the article but I know how much aggravation it caused here last year - very tenacious, very clever virus.

We currently have a 10Mb that is getting hammered almost constantly. We host our VLE & website internally plus have home/school access via Sun's Secure Global Desktop but at the moment none of these are being fully utilised (only staff currently using SGD, for example). The system will also have an extra 100 Thin Clients installed over the suumer so I'm hoping that when Nottinghamshire complete the "One County One Network" project that this will be greatly increase.

If that's the group that gets to listen to Placebo whilst trying various beers then please let me know who I need to bribe to get in that one!

Good old Spotty Chicken (or Pimply Pullet as I've also heard it called). Partial to anything Marston's, Shepherd Neame, Greene King, Thwaites, etc. As to Whiskys - Lagavulin, Oban and Glen Ord (haven't seen that for sale in a while) are my favourites.

Nope, never been allowed to. There was a possibility of 2 days in Germany a few years ago but both my boss and the Head made it perfectly clear that I wasn't allowed to go despite it being a short trip. I think that was really down to the technician's abilities or lack thereof (there's only me and 1 tech) and although the one we have now is very good I'm not sure it would make any difference.

Not sure how helpful FB are. One of the teachers discovered someone had created a fake account in her name with her details and then invited other teachers to be friends. Thing was, most of them accepted this invitation despite already being friends with her on FB! I know she contacted FB to see if she could find out who had done it but I don't think she ever received a reply.
