Not a stupid question at all - I wasn't aware I could do that (new to VMWare)! Discovered 2 100GB files - server.vmdk modified today (correct) and server_1.vmdk modified 2 few days ago when I was trying to add a new disk. Obviously I did something wrong at the time! I've now deleted server_1.vmdk, available storage has increased by 100GB and I haven't broken anything. Thanks.

I've somehow managed to lose 100GB of my datastore on ESXi 4! The reported size is 227GB (size of the physical disk) and I currently have 2 virtual servers on it - 1 is a development server with 20GB hard drive space, the other an operational server with 100GB hard drive space - total 120GB. Yet ESXi says 220GB is in use. Any ideas where the other 100GB has gone and how to get it back?

Is there anyone out there who currently only uses EMBC's filtering who can advise how to block iGoogle? The little darlings have found a Virtual Stripper module that we can't seem to stop access to. We can block access to the website that appears to host it but the module still works...

Definitely, just make sure you explain that you are snowed under so they don't think you are just getting belligerent. Perhaps explain in a polite but firm way to the one who refuses to do anything that she needs to follow the simple trouble shooting steps herself. If she doesn't then take slightly longer each time to respond and then make it obvious just how quickly she would have got the system working if she had done that first. Also lay on the "that's no problem" more thickly if it wasn't something she would be reasonably expected to resolve herself. Along the lines of the above, perhaps send an email to all staff informing them that as you are so busy certain requests will in future be refused. Show staff how to burn CDs, get pictures off cameras, etc. And to answer your question, no you're not rubbish. You just need to prioritise, be less helpful and make sure everyone is informed appropriately just why you are doing so.

That should be where the "subfolders and files only" permission comes in. Is the folder path visible to the students? I was about to suggest something then realised it wouldn't change anything if that path was now visible.

We have a folder on a share that has scripts in - the folder has access permission for "subfolders and files only" meaning that they can use the scripts inside but not open the folder they are in.

I assume you have set an advanced permission so that they cannot access "this folder only"?

I sometimes had run-ins with one of the LEA's techies when they sent him here - he was always dialling his manger to moan that he didn't know what to do because our system was different from the other schools. I always felt like telling him "That's right, ours has basic security principles applied.."

That very much depends on who comes in to replace you. I've never used RM CCn but the school had Viglen's Classlink when I first started here and my initial impressions were that it didn't want me to do anything, it wanted me to pay Viglen to change it. That summer we had a massive upgrade and went for vanilla 2003 so as long as you know 2003 even if my documentation is rubbish or non-existent it won't take you long to get an overview of the system and change things you don't like.

I recently bought a 3 Com and have been impressed with it. There was a slight problem with the SFPs not autonegotiating with the upstream switch but that was easily resolved by applying the latest firmware. I bought a 3CRBSG2893-UK which is 24 x 1Gb + 4 SFP slots - current price £160 on Probrand.

I'd love a more economical car but the one I own is mine - to buy another one would mean spending money I don't have. I'd love to work closer to where I live - I did for about 16 months and then the company I worked for starting making redundancies. My wife would love to work closer to where we live but she was made redundant at Christmas - her only option is travel further or be unemployed.

As above, then... Find a teacher has saved 1.75GB of photographs from a recent trip. Twice in the same folder. Duplicate deleted, batch resized and folder now only about 300MB
