What speed do you have at the moment and how much is it used? If you can find out this information (EMBC have a system called Cacti where they can look at your usage) it may help with your decision.

I personally found them to have poor products and appalling customer service. At the moment I get quotes from IDNS, Insight & Probrand for compatibles and buy from whoever's cheapest at that time (varies). Each has excellent customer service IMO and whatever make of toners we receive (Xinia, Delacamp, Longbow, etc) we don't have problems with.

I used to have so many problems in the past when I attempted to install it on the image that I never bother now, just taken it as a given that it needs to be installed after deployment.

Just ban the sites. The head of ICT is constantly asking me to ban games sites but you then go around the rest of school and see pupils blatantly playing games and the teacher doesn't seem to want to challenge them. Year 11s are worse as they will be leaving soon and therefore care even less about school policies than they used to.

I was told this morning that we would have new equipment installed, which will actually require a new switch cabinet, partly because the connections to the Library and Youth Centre will be merged with ours. When I asked if we would therefore get more bandwidth to accomodate 3 he didn't know. As the equipment is all located in our building what happens if we need to switch the power off for work we need doing? Also if the library's / youth centre's connection dies outside of school hours then they won't even be able to reboot it.

I gleaned that much this morning but it was things like: would we now have direct access to Synetrix or would we still need to call someone else first what disruption there would be during installation when would the actual installations take place (best during half term, etc. but that is the only time I can take holiday) amount of equipment required compared to what we have now I did have a few more that have completely flown out of my head now I'm trying to mention them here!

Anyone out there who knows a lot about this? Or even anything definitive about this? Had the guy from the County Council here this morning to look at our current infrastructure and I have to say I'm slightly concerned.

That reminds me - our admin domain also had a small range of IP addresses (126 from 25 bit SNM) and every device had a static IP but there was no record we were aware of that detailed which device had which IP address.

We also previously had the admin machines maintained by the LA and as I've mentioned before, any staff could install any software as well as browse to and subsequently view any person's documents including the Head Teacher's. Same again here, plus we don't use the single sign-on option in SIMS in case the member of staff haven't logged off but have closed SIMS.

Depends on your current set up. Before we did this we had problems with machines on Admin domain in staff room only being used at reporting times but curriculum machines being in short supply. Once we merged the domains we could use our infrastructure more efficiently and also use the ICT suites for staff training on any of the admin apps whenever we wanted.

We had a couple of old 'servers' (one was just a PC with Server 2003 on) that started getting a little temperamental. Consolodating into one server would have been a potential nightmare due to the apps they were running so I bought an ML110 G6 and put VMWare ESXi 4 on it. It only has a SATA drive but for around £700 I get a server with 8GB RAM, 2TB HDD and a 5 Year NBD OS warranty. The 2 virtual servers are much faster than the physical ones they replaced and as they were already licenced there were no costs involved, as there would have been for Hyper-V, etc. I have a couple more servers that don't run anything massively intensive also on ageing physical servers so I am going to migrate those too at some point. Oh, almost forgot - I also have a Dell OptiPlex 745 I bought second-hand on eBay that currently has ESXi on plus a multitude of virtual machines for testing and development purposes, both personal and work related!

I spoke to one of their guys the other day and he said that they may also take old TVs but they don't count as a "qualifying item".

If there is a cost, I have used a company in the past that don't charge providing there are more than 30 "qualifying items". If memory serves these are usually large items like PCs, laptops, monitors, etc. After a few weeks they send you a destruction certificate for any hard drives.

Do you think they'll expect you to do all the system support tasks as well as invigilating?

No union advice but I'm pretty sure you have to have had proper invigilator training. I'll ask our exams officer.

I think everyone's assuming the same as I am, that you're using Group Policy to redirect the folder. That would require changing the path once but would affect all users that GPO is applied to.

Just remember, even if nothing can go wrong something probably will! It only takes one unforeseen problem to completely mess up your scheduling.

DAT72 can theoretically backup 72GB of data but there are no guarantees. It will do 36GB native but anything thereafter depends on the compression rates of your software and hardware so it sounds as though your tape / drive combination has reached its maximum capacity. What compression type have you set in BE - all of my backups are set to Hardware if available, otherwise software. Edit: From BE's help files - Successful compression can increase the tape drive's data transfer rate up to twice the native rate. Some tape drives use the Lempel-Ziv (LZ1) compression algorithm for its superior versatility and efficiency. Compression can be highly variable depending on your input data. Compression algorithms look for repeatable data patterns that can be compacted. Image files from a graphical program like Microsoft Paint, may compress at 4.5:1 or more, while binary files may compress at just 1.5:1. Data that has already been compressed or random data (such as encrypted data or MPEG files) may actually expand by about five percent if you attempt to compress it further. This can reduce drive throughput.

Personally I would use the backup and restore option. Sorry but I don't understand what you're after here?

You say the tape isn't full - do you mean it hasn't reached the maximum possible eg. You have an LTO2 tape but the backup isn't 400GB or it hasn't reached the minimum eg 200GB for an LTO2?
