The support side is very poor, I did see it work at a previous school I worked at. They had HP Switches Fortigate onsite firewall Connections via Lancaster University Network Services At my current site it is very hit and miss and certain functions do not work at all, ie remote control. we are Cisco switches Mikrotik CPE VDOM Fortigate and Netsweeper via Talkstraight The Cisco network is massively better than the previous HP network, however this seems to make no difference, it is very hit and miss and more often miss Its been very disappointing

Hi, Wondering how other Schools do this, for ref we are a 365 Environment, systems would have to be cheap or free due to budgets. Curious IP Addressing - DHCP with reservations and spreadsheet, not ideal and would prefer proper IPAM Instructions - Generally group emails but would prefer a Wiki system that is cloud based Asset Tracking - Manual via spreadsheet Helpdesk - Spiceworks Cloud Other examples would be useful. Thanks, Alastair

We found ours worked after changing firewall, some odd ports used Think some staff may have changed at home prior to work around it, so it was definitely filter related

Hi, We purchased a number of these devices. However we find by default anyone could cast to it via viewing the code. Is there a setting to request validation of this on the screen so only one person, ie the Teacher can cast to it. TIA Alastair

No but sounds interesting, seems to have quirks using the UDM Pro We use a mixture of Nano HD and U6 discs That said I think a lot of it is our site, for an 850pupil school we often see over 1000 wifi connected devices

What exactly is Purple Mash? The Microsoft issue is a huge problem for us, connectivity to Microsoft service is critical. The response time to fix is something that will be questioned internally at SLT level as it directly affects the School day Thanks

SBB too,, no just loads forever.. does have CDN references is the page source it eventually loaded... wonder if its related to CDN

Anyone else? Event ID#1055 on hub suggests issue yesterday? We are seeing :- Long google search resolution times Wildix phone system drops Speed tests fluctuating wildly Its becoming regular to have issues, seems they have Staff to answer phones and act as "shields" to avoid answering what is going on? Account Manager never gets back

No but we had reports of VPN outage yesterday (Sunday 3/3/24) ticket open and awaiting confirmation that was the case

Schoolsbroadband VPN

Yes but only by nagging Calls to helpdesk either not answered or hung up Half the time it sounds like Staff are busy having a meal or coffee (work from home is not benefitting the customer) Does not work, example error below 2/20/2024 2:07:57 PM Information VPN id=96566 msg="negotiation information, loc_ip=X.X.X.X loc_port=500 rem_ip=X.X.X.X rem_port=500 out_if=0 vpn_tunnel=Work action=negotiate init=local mode=aggressive stage=1 dir=outbound status=success Initiator: sent X.X.X.X aggressive mode message #1 (OK)" vpntunnel=Work vpntype=ipsec 2/20/2024 2:08:09 PM Warning VPN id=96561 msg="locip=X.X.X.X locport=500 remip=X.X.X.X remport=500 outif=0 vpntunnel=Work status=negotiate_error No response from the peer, phase1 retransmit reaches maximum count..." vpntunnel=Work vpntype=ipsec This is via tethered mobiles Sometimes it did work but then instantly dropped Could well be ISP blocking port 500 Will only find out via proper home internet connection That said a number of Staff used SSL VPN via tethered mobile and its loss as a result of switch will not go down well -

Schools Broadband Issues
Alastairb25 replied to Kollektiv26's topic in Internet Related/Filtering/Firewall
VPN seems to be down for us, any confirmation from others? Internal DC up ok, tested on two laptops via external connections via different accounts Fails at 10% From Fortinet forums Description - This article indicates that if SSL VPN fails at 10% that basically means an issue with the network connection to the FortiGate. Scope - FortiGate Solution - If the SSL VPN is behind NAT it will fail at 10%. For this issue, it is necessary to do a port forwarding rule for the SSL VPN port and point it to the FortiGate WAN interface IP on your ISP modem @SchoolsBroadband -
We have an old Impero install / Site License from way back. Senso is good, ie up to date, offsite usage, use via web browser, potential for Teams, CPOMS integration.. Safeguarding wise it does work Broadcast not so much What network / ISP spec? We run Cisco 65XX Core, 10gb to each Edge, 3750X v2 at Edge, all Edge PC on 1gb and Edge switch 10gb back to Core ISP - Talk Straight with Netsweper / Fortigate - exclusions done A previous setup at another school with Senso worked better. It was HP 5604zl with HP edge switches Internet was BT with onsite Fortigate 101E for filtering I suspect the onsite device for filtering was the difference

Hi All, We have found lately our PE department and other areas under Vocation as a whole are using ever increasing storage for videos. We have asked for spec on this, ie Number of Students 8 Number of Videos * Length, Quality, Retention time and so forth For us this could easily add up to a couple of terabytes on its own, which is beyond our current capacity. We may well look down the SAN route versus DAS and Storage Spaces depending on what comes back from Teachers. What do other Schools do regarding Storage requirements in relation to videos being used as coursework and evidence for moderation? TIA Alastair
-
We have had similar issues. Upgrade was necessary as Impero was outmoded for us That said Remote Control / Broadcast is a serious issue We may keep Senso just for safeguarding aspect and go back to an Onsite system for remote

Hi, In light of recent Power issues and outages I would like to introduce a form of onsite Monitoring. Due to Finances this would be relatively simple A Laptop plugged in - That could function via battery after power loss A mobile plugged in on PAYG - That could provide a hotspot, function after power loss and also double as an Internal IT authenticator device The query mainly is what to run on the machine? I have used PRTG in demo mode with the free 100 sensors before Likely things to monitor would be Core CPE Servers Internet IP DNS Time TIA, Alastair

We also have Unifi.. had a few issues with Band Steering option Unifi is ok.. but the controller is pretty rubbish, it really is SME product that we ended up using due to not being given funds, it does work but can have a lot of quirks. In theory a proper Wifi survey, tuning ie buying some time for someone to map it and setup properly channel wise Even then we came to the conclusion alot of our issues are the building, lead, microwaves, georgian glass (fire doors) and alike, testing proved the signal to be massively worse around these

ISP recommendations
Alastairb25 replied to TheHyperTechie's topic in Internet Related/Filtering/Firewall
When working in South Cumbria we used LUNS.. possible you can get B4RN in South Cumbria / Lancs .. easily 1gb possibly more, only issue is any filtering and remote access would be on you to source as its just connection- 30 replies

We get a "you need to install Microsoft WebView2 component" as Student accounts, works fine as an Admin however. Anyone come across this? Thanks
-
I use Storage spaces and went with ReFS 2 hosts both with DAS and around 6-7 VM's on each. We did some performance testing at the time with general file copies and Crystal and it did seem faster

Syncing an existing AD account with 365
Alastairb25 replied to Alastairb25's topic in Cloud Services
So under AD User \ General tab \ E-amil: - this field is just display? The actual field to match is Attribute Editor tab \ proxyAddresses? In our case No ProxyAddresses are set We also have no immutable ID's within 365 That said some Mailboxes have the telephone number in which we think can only have been pulled from a previous install of AAD connect we were nto aware of.. Thanks -
Hi, I have the following scenario :- Local AD Non synced OU - [email protected] Azure Synced OU - [email protected] Older users hare in Non synced They have a 365 account but obviously not synced We need them to sync in order to move to 365 properly and allow other services We did the following Renamed username to be f.lastname@ Moved to Azure OU However they had [email protected] due to a quirk at the time. Instead of creating a new O365 account it has synced with existing. Which is what I wanted, however it will now only accept [email protected] but then fails afterwards I am unsure why this is as how did it match as the email address was different? If it has matched which seems to be the case why does f.lastname@ not work? According to Microsoft it will work but it might take up to 24 hours It shows ok in 365 and previous logons etc in Admin centre Just fails to logon TIA fellow Edugeeks Alastair
