Tried out on a few machines here. No problems at all including SIMS is fine with it. At this stage it doesn't confer enough advantages to rush to roll it out to all but compared to some previous upgrades it seems a smooth process.

We've run IE8 on a couple of machines since release and no issues at all detected with SIMS.

We publish from cover 7 to our intranet. Provided it is set up to publish to COVER7_NS.HTM from Cover 7 all should be well. Our users click a link on the front page of the Intranet and get a weekly page so they can select the day or another day. This page also has a back and forward button to take it to other weeks.

If it isn't a spoof then the sender should not be allowed to send out anything else until a re-education course involving spelling, punctuation and grammar has been undertaken.

If a user goes to a banned site on our system the ISA server redirects without explanation to the school web site (It is deliberately set up to do this). Could this be a similar sort of thing?

I think that you opt into it. The plus for you is that you can access wireless hotspots run by BT (in hotels etc) and also share the bandwidth of other people's hubs if thet have also signed up. They in turn can also share your bandwidth. My belief is that you opt in rather than it being a default.

This is a known and longstanding problem . There is quite a lot about it on the supportnet website. There have been several patches which seem to solve some but not all schools problems with this so it is probably worth contacting user support for thelatest patch and give that a whirl.

There were a number of commands for the dbf version of sIMS which used Launcher as its front end including the FILES= statement and also giving every workstation a LANID number( SET LANID=01) None of them are needed now unless you still have some data in old style SIMS that did not come across and you need to access it. for example when sims.net started the information in the old STAR archive was made inaccessible (incomprhensible to do this) so we keep it going on one workstation for as long as we can in case we need it. Typically it gets used twice a year and one day..................................

No we have not deleted any sessions but once they are finished with they are marked as closed and the browse of sessions is set by default to active so you need never see them unless you want to. We have currently got 72 closed sessions!

We used T4 cover and then switched to using Cover 7 last summer. We were also a field trial school. The data transfer from T4 was only partially successful. The second monitor is a lifesaver and I would not be without. I find Cover7 easy to use and like the way it writes data to other parts of the system. I wish it would do exam cover for internal exams better and this is promised for the next release. I would set it up so only those entering cover data get into the actual module. The cover for the day appears on an html file on our intranet and also individual cover appears on a teacher's home page. It is also important to define who does what as some absences are entered directly but others known about in advance might be entered by the Personnel Officer and having an agreed procedure helps with this.

Well that's not true. The Cover function in T4 is due not to be supported after this month (although it will still work) but the reporting function is supported until 2011 according to the latest SIMS roadmap which is just as well as some of the reports will only sensibly come from T4 and until the reporting engine in .net is significantly improved you will have to prise users away from T4

Used to take 7 minutes. Went to over half an hour last year but I've now installed the patches(including the dynazip one), run the backups from dbattach and it is back to about 6 minutes for SIMS (2.5gb) and under 3 minutes for FMS

There is repeated reference in this thread to needing to upgrade sims for the census but I've had no trouble downloading (only) the updated xsl files for the census and not yet taking the Dec/Jan upgrade. I could have ignored these files altogether if I had wanted to as the census does and will run without them but they do represent an improvement. There is a commitment to fewer releases in 2009 which if met will be welcomed by me. The upgrades don't always work perfectly but I can remember being presented with 63 floppy disks for an upgrade some years ago (and no way back if disk 62 was faulty ) so I can appreciate that things have moved on since then!

Upgrade done here last week. 3 problems fixed and (touch wood) no apparent problems. One minor problem when upgrading was that a couple of files already on the server and due to be overwritten were read only and needed that attrib removed for the upgrade to work but as it had happened before the panic was shortlived!

According to support net only 7104 (May release) is needed although there are some updates in the September release. I can confirm that it did run on the June release although as it happens we upgraded to September before sending it.

We retire Novell in two weeks time with considerable regret. It's been stable and there is a significant investment of experience in it but sadly more and more software won't run happily on it and more companies are not very keen on support if there is a problem and it involves Novell.

Only appear once the May release is installed. They print the same info. as Attednacne 6 but rather more neatly, I think.

We have run SIMS with Novell for about 19 years. As already mentioned SQL does not run on Novell so a Windows 2003 box is needed. We find it runs fine however when there are problems and a Novell network is mentioned that gets some very negative responses from some associated with help desks although not from the more knowledgeable.

I was getting a reason 2 error on one laptop. It had Norton Security on it. When this was removed the error disappeared.

FMS as from this month has moved to SQL2005. You can run versions up to 6.85 on the old MySQL and continue to do so even after taking the rest of Sims to SQL2005. There is a migration process to take FMS to 6.91 which is the first one that works with SQL2005. The upgrade and migration process is separate to changing sims.net to SQL2005. There is a migration document available from Supportnet to help with this process. Amazing that your help desk could not be of more help.

Nothing as far as I know. We have IE7 on most machines with SIMS and no problems have arisen (touch wood).

You can change the rights at file or directory level by using the Novell tools Netadmin or Console 1

A file has been produced by SIMS this week that installs .net 2 and .net 3 and also does the cleaning up of old sims installations. Have run it on a couple of workstations with no discernible ill effects (so far!)
