Total shambles. There are organisations out there (such as YRS who I volunteer for) who have been helping kids code for years; surely the government would have been better off providing a pot of funding to these organisations backed by years of experience and hundreds of volunteers? Why re-invent the wheel, especially if you think it's square?

Maybe I'm missing something, but surely you just set it as your secondary monitor in the usual way (Nvidia, CCC etc.)?

That rolling image effect is what happens when a camera spins at such speed that it manages to complete a [nearly] complete rotation between frames - you can see a similar effect if you look at the wheels of cars on video (or even IRL if they're going just the right speed) - they appear to stop spinning or look like they're spinning very slowly. It's an illusion due to the limited number of images our eye/the camera can capture in a second As for the lack of a splash, it's a pretty sunny day, maybe the mud had firmed up but remained soft enough to cushion the fall? As @Bradlys said, it's probably a GoPro which are tough little things to break!

Echoing what @CAM said a little, I think a major focus should be on making any new system as open as possible. This means not relying on browser plugins (which in turn could limit the end user to which browser they can use), using open document formats, ensuring cross browser compatibility. When schools buy your system, their only concern should be can your system provide the features as advertised. Whether they are using MS Office or Libre Office, Windows, Linux or Mac shouldn't matter - your system should "just work" regardless. It would be easy to target a Windows environment using IE with MS Office installed (as 99% of educational software today does) but that's not what's best for your customers. In terms of benefits to yourselves in developing a system as proposed above is that you can push the fact that, unlike many other MIS, yours will work in any environment. This means that if schools want to run a Linux network with Libre Office (or similar) and take advantage of the huge savings they could make, they can without concern that their MIS, one of the most important pieces of software in school, will cause them issues. TL;DR - please, take this opportunity to break away from the heavy reliance on MS products that is so prevalent in education - think of the money schools could potentially save in the current financial climate

Get yourself some walking boots/shoes man! Paid about £20 for my Quecha walking shoes from Decathlon, very comfortable and very hard wearing, fairly waterproof too. Don't know how they'd hold up if I actually went hiking in them but for day to day use I can't fault them at this price

Powershell scripts are just plain text documents, what's stopping you saving them as scripts as requested? If you can edit text documents, you can edit powershell scripts...

I trialled exporting comments to Excel (via marksheets) and getting HODs/tutors to proof read, but they all complained about not being able to easily make comments (despite my assurance that typing comments in to the column to the immediate right was fine...) So now we do a draft print, black and white, cheap paper and tutors read and highlight errors for me to correct in SIMS before the final print.

She's totally within her rights to refuse and the school should not legally try to take fingerprints without explicit parental consent. However, her response is a little out of proportion. These biometric systems only store 3 or 4 preset points of a fingerprint. You could not take those points and use them to identify a fingerprint taken from, say, the scene of a crime - there's not enough data for it to be considered 100% accurate. Outside of the system it is used with, the fingerprint fragment stored is useless. So, fair enough she refused to provide prints but the Guy Fawkes/Anonymous thing is a little cringe-worthy when you take in to account how useless the data stored really is - the name, address, telephone contacts, medical details, attendance reports etc. that are returned to central government 3 times per year via census reveal a lot more about the girl.

I should hope so as that's more than just "buzz" it's the evolution of HTML; any website being designed today ought to have a firm basis in HTML5.

Nova and Exams are well overdue an overhaul to bring them in to the 21st century - perhaps this might finally be their time? The rest AFAIK are already .NET based so theoretically shouldn't be any more difficult than core SIMS to port (not that I'm saying that won't be difficult!) The question is, will this be a complete move to online or just an improved online front end? I just hope it's not all based on Sharepoint
