I always just rename the admin folders etc. It's not like my server needs the space. TBH, and I am jinxing myself in saying this, but it's been a long time since the update process gave me any trouble. The biggest problem is the hidden bugs, later patched, which is why I always wait as long as I can before I do the update--I'm hoping they'll have found the problems and patched them already so I don't have to go through the update twice

I expect an Exchange server has IIS logs stretching back--anything under C:\inetpub\logs\LogFiles can be deleted/moved, and that can claw back gigabytes.

HCSS: excellent. I've had two Bursars swear by it. Never a problem for me, very effective, all the company people I've met have been very knowledgeable. Highly recommended. PSF: hahahahahahaha ok no. Let me count the ways: Within the first week, I had written up a document with 20 fundamental problems. We're talking problems that prevented the training going ahead. The authorisation workflow (i.e. the major part of the product) wasn't working at all. The button to authorise didn't work. Authorisations were going to the wrong people. Reports weren't working. Notifications weren't working. Everyone could see every budget and all the purchases against it. Some budgets had been arbitrarily smooshed together just because they shared a budget holder e.g. HOUSE and PSYCHOLOGY. HTTPS wasn't set up, and when I asked them about this, I was told it was too late and I had to ask about it before they started set up, even though there was no indication they wouldn't take this incredibly obvious and free and effective step to secure an HTTP-based project. We pay silly money in maintenance. Do we get told when there's an update? Don't be silly, they wait for one of Finance to ring up with a bug and then say "oh yeah, we fixed that, we'll send you the disc". The update instructions are completely wrong and neglect to tell you to backup files you will need later. The admin password for the product is quite blatantly the same across all installs everywhere. I would bet actual money I could walk into any school or business using PSF and log in as admin and have more access than the Bursar. The domain admin password the product uses is saved in plain text in an obvious config file. When a bug came up and PSF Support wanted to reproduce it, PSF asked for the database to be sent over for testing. Fine. Except they asked me to sign a form saying (a) they could take the DB whenever they wanted without asking (b) they could do it without encryption in order to speed up support. Sorry, what now? Data Protection, maybe? Above all, it's just a horrible product for end users. Everyone hates it. I still track my budget in Excel because it's better. Finance like it because they're used to its quirks and it's an easier workflow than everyone submitting paper order forms (as we used to), but they're the only ones. If you end up stuck with it--as we did, when county dropped SAP, and this was the only option that met the requirements for academies--it is workable. But it's dethroned FacilityCMIS as my most despised bit of software to support.

The cost of 100mb leased line has come down... but so has the cost of 10GbE. My LAN will still be a hundred times faster than my internet connection. There's simply no point and no efficiency in shoving most of this stuff out to the cloud.

Only briefly to shake hands and share a couple of words before the show when they introduce themselves; the turnaround between shows is pretty quick (as in, we went out in the head-to-head on our first show, and were immediately getting changed and made up and mic'ed up for the next episode) so there's no time. And, tbh, it came across as "just a job" to them, which is fair enough--they were smack bang in the middle of recording 110 episodes, at 4 episodes a day, 4/5 days a week, at an hour and a half per episode. I think my enthusiasm would have shrivelled and died at that point as well!

Unles you're doing actual rendering, or game development, I don't think it's worth the money tbh. By the time you're getting an appreciable difference in performance you're spending £100 per machine. SSD would make more subjective difference to performance. Kodu runs fine on IGP if you turn the DOF and Bloom and whatever other silly effects off, IME.

If you're a renewal customer, your discount level is locked at its current price until July 1 2018. The slow reduction in the discount that caused so much confusion is only for new OVS-ES customers. The plan is to keep renewing in 1 year chunks until you get to a renewal on 1 July 2017 or after, and at that point renew for 3 years, to keep the discount for as long as possible--ideally up until June 30 2021. After July 1 2018, prices will have a one-time rise of 19%. My annoyance is that my renewal date is July 31, so the best I can do is renew for three years on July 31 2017 and keep my discount until July 2020, 11 months less than the optimum.

My config manager server (with all its web server logs) fits into 40GB. Its installer folder is only 4GB. I have no idea how you've got numbers so big. This post has no answers and is basically rubbing it in, isn't it? Sorry.

Run diskcleanup, that'll clear down winsxs. It's not enabled in 2008R2, but it's easy to get back. Always easy space to free up.

I felt like the licensing questions about the OVS-ES discount were answered fully, and I understand that at last. Bit annoyed because my renewal date is the 31st July, but so it goes. At least I know where I stand on that. But I confess I am having trouble envisaging precisely what a hybrid network would look like and why we should be moving to it. The only core service that makes sense to move to the cloud is Exchange, which I've already done...

It's both for me. Absolutely hilarious ("Where did you buy the bleach, Fass?"), but definitely ends as a tragedy, as you realise how they've all been railroaded into this position they were told they wanted but none of them actually do. The part where he has to say goodbye to his wife at the hospital... yeesh. Very effective social commentary, to me, really sneaks its punches in under the humour.

Yeah, I can't fit a 21:9 screen on my desk :/ I'm likely to spend more time in Word than I am in games anyway, so it'd just feel like wasted space (and two windows open side by side sounds like a terrible idea for my focus). Ideally I'd like something like that Dell monitor but at 120Hz, maybe even with G-Sync, but dat dollar. IPS is the more important factor for me.

Settled on the Gigabyte GA-Z170X-UD3 at £120 as marginally better than the Asus Z170-A. Both have an Intel NIC, lots of PCI-E, and Optical S/PDIF out, but the Gigabyte has 2 M.2 ports, the proper Intel Alpine Ridge chip for USB3.1 (not ASMedia), better audio chip (ALC1150 v ALC892), and reportedly better construction--I hear tell that the Asus board is a bit flimsy. Of course, no board is perfect, and it seems the Gigabyte has a funky arrangement of screw holes so you can't mount all 9 standoffs, and I lose the Q-Connector block that Asus provide for easy installation of motherboard headers for your case, but those are one off problems. So a Coolermaster Hyper 212 EVO, Gigabyte GA-Z170X-UD3 mobo, and I think I'm done. All I need to decide now is whether to buy the Dell U2515H monitor (25", 2560x1440, IPS) or wait 2-3 years for OLED to become affordable
