First of all I would take stock of your situation and identify the short comings of the system if any exist beyond it being a mess; consult your colleagues and identify whether they have particular needs/issues which require addressing. My personal preference is to keep it simple and have a top level OU for computers & another for users under which in other OUs under these two you can break them up by their location/type/user type etc. I'd keep the shares and network drives to an absolute minimum again based upon what is currently in place and my liking of keeping stuff simple probably a shared drive for student shared and a separate for staff shared under which you can use permissions to restrict access should certain aspects only be available to particular types of users. I think you need to identify where you're at and what's currently available and get your new colleagues support in orchestrating a change like this, I'm sure those who are interested will thank you for involving their needs/wishes. Two good suggestions there, still need licenses for glennda's offering with the virtual XPs but it's a nice idea indeed and gets around 'leaving' kit on.

Depends what they want to do with this vpn but if its just for casual file / SIMS access then a terminal server will be perfect for you. (running sims on their computer over the vpn is a bit scary/slow) It's then something that as time goes on I suspect more of your colleagues will want to be able to do it so if the terminal server is reasonably specced you can get a fair few users on it. Licensing involved but nothing too dramatic I wouldn't have thought.

I've seen this before with iplayer, it needed an edgefcs.net domain added to the whitelist. Do you have a decent filtering solution that will let you audit by the IP/host of the mac/user to see any infringements?

Assuming windows, boot from an installation CD, drop into the recovery console and try fixboot or fdisk /fixmbr perhaps. (google these for further info and usual caveat of back up before you do it.) I would also try a different sata cable/ide ribbon and ensure the contact to the board/disk are sound as it might be an issue with the controller rather than the disk.

Replmon on each DC and see whether they are all happy chappies. Event viewer to look for errors. GPUDPATE /FORCE on a workstation to see if you get any errors in the event viewer there.
