Yep definately a lack of pressure used there, with no regard to the edges. I also noted a lack of any attempt to put in any sharp creases. Utterly deplorable. A shame to ironing enthusiasts. As far as equipment goes - nothing beats a good solid table covered with a blanket and good heavy steam iron. None of this fancy ironing board stuff or adjustable steam & spray gadgets required. A wet hankerchief is usful too - picking off dry bogies first is highly recommended.

BETT 2007 - Where do we go from here?
alan-d replied to Dos_Box's topic in General EduGeek News/Announcements
Well done guys, I can appreciate all the effort involved to something like BETT up and running. To have made it a success at the first attempt deserves a standing ovation Hopefully I'll be there next year - trying to get things done before I go away on a course Those of us that didn't make it did actually manage to babysit the forums though -
That would be useful kingswood - Thanks

If you host your own VLE, what's your setup?
alan-d replied to beeswax's topic in Virtual Learning Platforms
Alan, I suspect that machine may struggle a bit to run Windows 2003 let alone anything else :D Those 1.6MHz CPUs aint as powerful as the present day range Anyway, mines Sharepoint Based, on a HP DL380 machine - 3GHz Xeon, 1GB Ram, 200GB RAID 5 Array, Server 2003. This will run the lot, SQL, Sharepoint etc etc. Sorry I meant Dual Processor 1.6GHz - more than enough to run it -
So that's what you do all day!

Hi We are starting to look about as to what to chose for our VLE system. The Senior Management here are very keen on TALMOS but I have seen mixed reviews on this site. Can anybody PM with their opinions with the system, I will have a large amount of say in the direction of which VLE we choose and I don't want the school to be landed with something that is expensive and unusable. Thanks Andrew It looks very much as though we have put TALMOS on the back burner for a while and are gong to give our Moodle site a fair run. The salesman is very pushy and it is understandable why some give in and buy the system. We found that the price dropped and the added bonuses got better each time the salesman rang, so whatever you do don't agree a price before at least the 6th call from him/her. It looks a good system in that it ties in with Sims and Nova-T, however there is a big change to KS3,4 and 5 coming up in 2008 which means nearly everything you put in now will have to be redone in 2008. There is no easy way of updating the info ie schemes of work etc. The TALMOS rep was unaware of this fact and neither was the company by all accounts. Nice system if you can afford it but be aware of upcoming changes - it would pay off to wait till post 2008 at the moment.

When it arrives we'll have a Dell dual core 1.6Mhz, 4GB RAM and 6 x 300GB HDs. Win 2003 OS. On that we'll be installing Apache, MySQL, PhP and PhPMyAdmin which in turn will run an e107 CMS which will act as our Intranet/Portal access. From that we'll be linking to Moodle which will be the main VLE from the same box. Hopefully it will all work nicely with AD authentication. Using a Win OS instead of a *nix OS may seem strange to some but none of us here know any *nix and the cost in training manhours (official) far exceeded the cost of using a Win OS. We decided to do it this way because it gives us a lot flexibility as to what we can use them for. ie the e107 gives us better features as far as a web site (Intranet) goes but Moodle is superior as a VLE. The only thing that may be added at a later date will be any digital signage kit we install, but that's another project -

Going to have a think about it for a few weeks but option 1 looks favorite as we already get 100% A-C grades anyway, the majority being grade B & higher. The pilot we did last year was more of a hindrance to teaching than a help. We're not dismissing it altogether, it's a case of wait and see what evolves.

Would be classed as a workplace placement sign em all up

I'm looking at a similar project. Some time ago a rep from Sedao paid me a visit and that system looks impressive. Well better than powerpoint anyway. I'd like some other contacts to look at before I get quotes etc.

Give them a ring - the prices they send out on the flyers are not always the correct ones for education establishments. There are bound to be some increases over time but they are still good value for money Mmmm maybe I should ask for a commission I'm about to do a 4 day security course with them for £400 all in.

Beeswax is right - there has to be a backup system in the event of net outages and to allow for a clash of exams. The pilot was on the right track - it was just poorly planned without any thought on the user interface. Something closer to the ECDL tests would be more appropriate.
-
Yes lets all teach the test - cos the interface does not really resemble anything they use throughout the rest of the year at school or home. (What an idiot!!!)

*cough* The RM logo is too big

Interactive White Board suitable for hall
alan-d replied to speckytecky's topic in Recommended Suppliers
Most of ours are just used as a projector screens although we do have a few teachers that use it to the full, and to good effect. -
Mmm I take it that's a No then? bugger - it looked nice anyway
-
Beat me to it plexer another option is to bridge the APs. Each AP will usually struggle with 10 connections - depending on the logon script. The laptop will then search for another AP and so on, eventually it gives up and says bugger it I can't find a DC. By bridging you increase the chance of the laptop finding a DC at the first attempt.
-
In a word ................. Yes! Seriously though it could be any or all of those methods My preferance would be online with an option to run from a dedicated (very secure) server within the school for a backup and allow for candidates which may have a clash of exams. Oh and optical recognition to log in
-
Maybe adding 1 or 2 more access points may help. You don't say whether the laptops are used throughout the building or lumped together in one room.

I know what you are saying - I was thinking more of the marking being automated
