umm I'll have to look in our student laptops bios, see if we can disable it What brand laptops you using out of intrest to do this, dont think I have ever seen this in a BIOS before Dosent hiding the wireless cause you problems throught? Sometime I have to disconnect it and connect it again, or it just gets dis connected by itself, so that would invole looking in an admin account to connect it again, that would just be a pain to have to logon into more account everytime to do that

Not sure hiding it wouldbe prevent students disableing the wireless has they could do eithier these two things 1- They can disable the wireless card with the wireless on/off switch if you have it on your laptops 1- They can disable the wireless card with the wireless Function key and the required F* Button to turn the wireless card off and on *What ever the number on the F buttons to turn it off So what ever the case, it something you got to get used to, you cant stop the problem, unless you dont have the swith or the f button.

Hi Guys Finally sorted the start menu & desktop folder redirection problem (Not the way I wanted but it works, I have all the same desktop icons everywhere instead of diffrent set of icon in diffrerent locations because of different software configs Is there a way that when someone clicks on a shortcut for a piece of software that is not installed for a message to come up and say what room that particlar software is installed? Right so the main question here is the policys Has you know Windows XP uses adm files for the administrative templates under both the computer and user, but Windows 7 uses the admx files. Windows XP cant read the admx files, nor can Windows 7 read the adm files. So the question is, how do I setup the policy for both XP & Windows 7 Do I do this? Step 1- Using 2003R2 or 2008R2 Servers, setup the windows & software settings, under both computer and user (Gussing 2008R2 is the right one, to get all the new Windows 7 settings) Step 2- Using 2008R2 Server and the same Group policy object, setup the adminstrative settings under both computer and users (So this sets up the admx files) Step 3- Using 2003R2 Server and the same Group policy object, setup the adminstrative settings under both computer and users (So this sets up the adm files) Is this the correct way? Or once I setup the Group Policy object in step 2 (Above) and go into the the group policy object in Server 2003R2, will this actually make the adm with the settings I done already form 2008R2? umm any advice guys? We need to replace 4 class rooms worth of pcs 3x ICT rooms (About 30 In each) 1x Library (20 in total, would like to increase to 30 if we can find out how to place more in) So at lease 110 computers need to be replaced, maybe a few more too, ones around the offices Trying to get rid of all the old computers, and with the new ones, install Windows 7 Old ones are like Single core P4, DDR Ram and non compatiable Areo Graphics Cards So anyone got any ideas has to what we should buy and where from? Eithier build our own of buy them, should not come with a screen, all our screens are 15inch LCD, would like better and bigger ones with a better res (Only have 1024x768 res atm), but there are just no space for bigger ones, so not worth getting new ones until we have more space Dread to think how much at the min 130 computers would cost, im dreading asking the boss to do this

Hey Guys Trying to setup start menus & Desktop Redirected for Windows 7 & XP We have different software in diffrent locations so we need diffrent start menus for the diffrent locations So what I believe you need to do is - Have the locations in there own folder (Already had this for the diffrent software policys) - Enable Loopback with merge under computer settings in group policy - A policy with the correct locations link for the folder redirections So what I done - Made a folder in AD called Windows XP Test Layout - Made a folder in AD called Windows 7 Test Layout - Where we keep our normal start menu & desktop shorcuts I made some new folders so it goes like this XP \Room Location Folder \Staff & Student Folders, & Inside Both of them - Desktop & Start menu 7 \Room Location Folder \Staff & Student Folders, & Inside Both of them - Desktop & Start menu And of In the Desktop & Start menu the shortcuts - Made 2 new policys, one for each of the new xp & windows 7 test layouts, settings were the required Redirected Folders, start menu and desktop had three user groups defined in it, Admin, Students and Staff, had they have slightlly diffrent shortcuts (Admin accounts I used the Staff Shorcuts for the time being) I made the XP policy from Server 2003 R2 and the Windows 7 from a temp Server 2008 R2 I setup to get the policys setup for Windows 7 (Will upgrade from Windows Server 2003 R2 Server soon) - Moved a XP computer in into the XP layout and a Windows 7 computer into the windows 7 layout - Made a new policy for the students, with just only one setting (Disable 'All User Start Menu Shorcuts, made from Server 2003 R2), did not do this with the admin account because we only have the documents redirected at the moment, so that shouldnt cause a problem, plus there are not many settings that can confint with the admin policy has only a few settings have been defined, students have a lot of settings defined ofcourse. - After school hours I disabled the normal student policy and enabled the new one - Windows 7 both the admin and student accound worked with no problem - XP is redirecting but only the admin accound, doesnt work with the student account - Also tried disable the default domain policy to check if that is conficting with it, that dindt work eithier, so the only policys running is for the xp computer is The layout policy were the computer is and the student policy where the student account is So this is starting from scrath with the policys, so nothing should be conflicting! Please Please Please Please Help a guy out here Have been trying to sort this problem out for days now, and just just getting REALLY annoying Anyone one know how to configure this correctlly? On XP with use, Start Menu, Desktop, Home Profile, App Data Redirected Folders I have tried just making a redirected policy from Server 2008 R2 for both xp and windows settings on it(Temp server just to setup the policys for windows 7, plan to upgrade from 2003R2 servers soon) That failed So also have tried a policy made from Server 2008 R2 just for the windows 7 folder redirections and a policy made from Server 2003 R2 just for XP I am having no luck, has when both policys are enabled under a test OU with a test Student account in that OU with any policys above this disabled (So no other settings confit with this) Windows 7 seems to run fine with the desktop icon and start menu (Any idea why the default smart menu icon are still there through ie, manintance foldeder etc) But when I logon to a xp manchine, the desktop icons and start menu icons are not working -------------------------- Profile Questions At the moment we Use Roaming Profiles which I cant see why we need the app data folder redirected, should we get rid of this? (It then loads the default one from the computer then right?) Also whould you advise on a mantory profile? one for xp and w7? Is it possible to get a script to copy it onto the manchine instead of it copying to the computer from the server, has this would be faster for logons Does a mantory profile gets deleted when you log off? Does a mantory profile forse it to be uploaded every time a user logs on or use a cached folder from the last user logo and it just changes the redirected folders for that user Please help, this is really stressing me out here!

heard some good news today found that one of our old admin server is get replaced Thought we were only getting our backup/cache server replaced So that means I should have a server to change all this around with Has that means I can install server 2008 on that move some roles and services from one server, upgrade that, and move them back, and then the next server I did problery not do something that smart today, was bored, so i installed server 2008 r2 on a pc, added it do the domain and made it a domain controller to start trying to configure the windows 7 policys, havent got that far with that yet Do I need to make a complete new policy for it ie have one for xp made from server 2003 and one for w7 made from server 2008r2? confussed how the admx files work or do it sit inside the same folder has the adm in the policys folder?

Yer tried to look at the forum sereral times, signed up to it, but noone activates the account, so I cannot look at the forum, which is a real pain intresting v3 will be out soon, wonder if we get a free upgrade to that, hopefully that will sort the problem, when this is released i'll start impero from scratch, uninstall all the server and console viewers and install clean cant uninstall the clients, too many laptops and computers to go around (wish they use msi installers for easy deployment)

Needs to be installed Our laptops running lexia gets too slow and has frezzes if its run from the network, get the wireless is too slow so we install lexia onto the laptop and rooms lexia gets used, that way also there is less traffice on the network I do this for most programes, think there is only one shared which is about 8gb which is just too much to install on computers

didnt need to have admin rights in xo, seems you need it in W7 for it to work think the programs were Lexia (not all of them, only some needed it) Dreamweaver mx2004 - think were getting rid of that on all the systems, had to keep it on there for a while, we just got the serif suite Kartouch (some frech program) sure there was a few others too, just cant think atm cant remember what ones needed xp compatiablity

nope i I have have xp compablity on a programe using windows 7 without virtualisaion (thats is needed for the xp virtual mode, basiclly virutal pc) it isnt local admin right we needed, it is on the domian, we dont want the users to be an adminm we just need it so there rights are elervated to admin for for the programes that need admin rights, if you understand that

Hey guys, been testing Windows 7 with our programes Some need to have xp compatablity and some need admin rights How whould I apply the xp compatabablity on the programes needed? all programes are managed software, so I cannot apply this intergrated into the image And also has I said some needs admin rights How would apply this to restricted users for those neeed programes?
