Guys I have been updating all the policys on our network using a 2008R2 server (This one is only temp, its actually just a standard pc, until we upgrade our server to it) On the following policys - Default Domain Policy - Default Domain Controllers Policy I found out that that must have the default Unique ID that it comes with I have found the policies will not delete from GPMC I have made the new Group policy files to replace them with, but how to I go round replaceing the old ones with the new ones has they will not delete Has anyone else brothered updating these policies to the new 2008R2 policy settings? Or am I being silly? Does it upgrade when I connect the first 2008R2 server to the network like I have just done?

hey guys nned a little help, I made my base image for windows 7, now need to make the Unttended File What companents and features do I have to add in WAIK to make it automate? there is loads of stuff Is it possible to make it so we can type in a computer name? Do want to muck around renameing computers after being deployed We have other wds images (xp) If the windows 7 in automatted will it skip the image slection screen? dont want it to and need it not to Our support company setup our vista image, dont know how they set it up really Seems when ever I used their image, I still had to select the time, date etc and add a user and so on, even in the wds msc there is a Unttended File location path enabled, even not joining the domain, when the text files tells it. Is there only meant to be one file? seems there is three one folder and one where the vista image sits, so 4 inb total, so confussing how they done it Dont care about it really, has far has I know it can go into the recyle bin Once I have setup the Unttended File with your help, how do I sysprep it? with xp you just put it into the folder that contines sysprep fi;les form the deploy cab in the main root of c Where do I put the Unttended File in Windows 7 to work Why the hell have the made it much more confussing thaqn xp sysprep Also how can I tell if any of our servers have the kms services on it? dont know if we have using mak or kms product key in our vista image, so dont know how its been setup. Dont want to install another kms service if we have one already on our servers, so it will conflict (plus dont need two of course)

nope was only logging off after gpupdate was done has it requested to ok wil try that tomorrow then, might has well just disable the whole admin policy see if that makes diffrerence
-
Bumpy Even tried disabled the desktop folder redirection, and doing a gpupdate /force in cmd This message is still coming up, so I dont think it is do with folder redirection What other settings would affect this?
-
Why brother worrying about the new update warning Just keep the lastest java deployed, then you have not got to worry
-
yep checked All full rights
-
nope afraid its not that, admins get all the rights for folders that we create (have checked incase)
-
Have you tried Turning it off & on? lol xd sorry had to say that Nah have you tried removing it and installing it again?

For some reason us 'Administrators' now cant save any files onto our desktop, any where else is not a problem Is there a policy setting to disable and prevent saving to the desktop? I have changed the settings for the admin policy, made a new one using 2008R2 server, so Windows 7 reads the policy I didnt put many settings in this policy, think all I enable was the proxy setting that we have to use and start menu. desktop, network documents redirection Is there a setting I missed? I did also change the folder redirection settings, admins didnt have start menu redirection before and the desktop was redirected from the staff start menu (Meant we had too many iconws on the desktoip, reason for the change) Start menu now just has a folder called Network programs with all shorcuts that the staff normally have (Made a new shared folder for the admins for this, so we dont use the same folder. Any ideas how to sort this problem out. Not good that the head cant now save to the desktop Please help, this is very annoying

Hey Guys Need Advice & Quotes If Possible Nedeed New Computers In 4 Rooms (30 Computers In Three Rooms, 18 In Another + Some Spare) Old Ones are P4 512MB DDR So Upgrading RAM Will Be Too Expensive Because Its Not DDR2, Also WOuld Have To Upgrade The VIdeo Card That SUpport Areo Want To Upgrade To Windows 7 Around The School So These Will Be No Good Now, So Need A List Of Companents (Or A Quote) To Hand To The Boss, Cant See Him Be Happy Upgrading 4 Rooms, But Its Needed Not Letting Him Order Computers This Time, We Now Have 20 Computers For ECDL With Crappy Intel Atoms In Them Because Of Him ------------------------- Specs Im Thinking - Case, Got To be VERY Similar To This Size, To Fit Onto The Brackets Under The Desk Work Surface (Unless You Have New Brackets That Will Fit Onto The Case Selected) Buy HCB01 Desktop* from CCL - Online Retailer of the Year 2008, 2007 & 2006 for laptops, desktops and computer hardware - Min Of 2GB Ram (4GB Would Be Nice, Future Proof Then) - Hard Drive Size, Can Be Very Small, Sata2 (Maybe A Small SSD 32GB?) - No Screens Needed (Would Like To Upgrade Our 15 Inch 1024x768 Res Screens But We Dont Have The Space For BIgger Screens) - CPU - Intel Prefered, Fast Core Duo 2 - Graphics - Intergrated Should Be Fine - Motherborad - At Least 945G Chipset For Areo (If Intel CPU), Would Prefere Something A Bit Newer If Possible Has That Chipset Is Getting Old Now - No DVD Drives Needed - Not Sure If We Need Mice & Keyborad, But If At A Decent Price, Why Not (Defo USB If So)

never mind guys Had a brainwave (Hopefully this will work, will test Monday) Just gonna set all the restrictions by group policy make them apply to the account then use the copy profile tool then disable the policy (Will keep it, has if I need to make changes at a later date, this will make it easy, than having to make the policy from scratch) has it shouldnt be needed has all the restrictions should have appled to the account reanme to .MAN and test Hopefully working, if so make a staff mandatory xp profile, then a student and staff windows 7 one That way all I need for those accounts is their Network documents and possiblly faviourts redirected Would you advise a script or a policy for just that? Will have to have a default printer script running too Damn Have Too Much To Do! The Long List Of Things To Do: - W7 & XP Mandatory Profile Setup (Seperate Ones For Student & Staff) - Make A Script For Location Based Start Menu - Repackage Certain Applications For W7 - New XP Image (Update) - Setup W7 Image - Think I Need To Do Both 32Bit & 64 Bit - Setup A Brand New School Website, VLE, Ticket Support Site - Upgrade Servers to 2008R2 - Update Invertory (Need To Go Round All The School) - Build 4 Classrooms Worth Of Computers, or Find A Decent Quote For Pre Made Ones - Deploy W7 On Classroom Computers & Student & Staff Laptops, and Office Computers - Radius Server Possablly (Fed Up Entering Wireless Keys To A Set Of Laptops) - Maybe Some Other Stuff I Cant Think Of Now

I am currentlly looking to set mandatory profiles on our system for staff and students Of course I need one for Windows 7 & one for Windows XP Now what I would like to do is make all the restrictions actually in the mandatory profile instead of have a policy set for all the restrictions, this should also enable the students and staff to logon quicker (Just have a policy for their network document redirection, or a logon script instead) Is there a program that allows me to tick restrictions, logon to the account, and the log off and use the copy to profile tool I found one program called Microsoft Steadystate, which works fine expect one part, It leaves the start menu settings box in the classic start menu box Steadystate doesnt work for Windows 7, so need another tool that is compatable to do this, would prefere the same tool for both if there is one So basiclly what other programs are there to do this with or is there a list of registry files I can use Or do you reckon to carry on with the polices? (We dont normally change the student and staff policys, so once its setup, it problery will stay the same settings) Thanks in advance!

Hi Im setting up new policys for the domain, has we need new ones for Windows 7, so im refresh the Windows XP to. At this time I have decided to get mantory profiles setup for the staff and students instead of roaming profiles, has it takes too long to logon to I could get the desktop icon and start menu shorcut throught the mantory profile of course But in different rooms we have different software, for example we have prodesktop in the technology ICT room, and does not get installed elsewhere, has we try to install the software based on only where they will be used, to stop too much junk getting installed onto the computers. So instead of having every single shortcut for all the software we have around the school, which means having shorcut that will not work because its not installed on the computer. So if anyone is up to it, could someone make a script, that looks at the computer name and downloads the correct start menu For example if it see the computer name has DT-PC** it the downloads the DT start menu Shouldn't need any delete commands in it and the mantory profile will have no shorcut icons in the start menu Thanks in advance! Also do you know if it is nessory to map a folder in a script, which we currentlly have, this maps a app folder, where some shared databases are for networked programes

Folder Redirection Problems
pritchardavid replied to pritchardavid's topic in Windows Server 2000/2003
Sorted the problem in the end Decided to disable loopback setting And just made a new policy for redirection, one for staff, one for students Wanted has you know, diffrent start menu icon for diffrent locations, but oh well, at least the start menu now works for XP & Windows 7 -
Do you have to replace all 130 at once? How about replace some and using the RAM from the ones you replace to upgrade some of those you keep this year? Want to replace them all at once really, if this is done, I can get Windows 7 installed nearly all around the school, would need to do this because teacher and maybe some students will get confussed using two different operating systems, so would be easier just using Windows 7 all around the school, makes it easier to manage the polices too Also, if you are on a tight budget, nComputing/SoftXpand/Multipoint Server are good solutions to research into. I can shave £4k off a refurb using SoftXpand instead of buying individual desktops. We have a citrix server we could use, but to be honest I would much prefere normal computers. Not sure what the budget is, think its a fair amount, our school is specialiest in ICT & Maths, hense another reason we kinda need to upgrade to this You could also be creative with the specs. Do you need Dual Core, 4Gb, Win 7 in the library - or would Atom, 1Gb, Linux boxes work just as well? NO NOT LINUX (IM A HATER) Doubt we really need 4GB, 2GB would do, but then again, they sell for about £50, be better to have 4GB now, instead of having to upgrade them in for example 2 years. Want dual core really, they are pretty cheap now days, so not worth getting a single. Dont like those Intel atoms, think they are too slow, problery a downgrade to what we have now, we have a ECDL suite (Still an actually using it for the ECDL lessons yet for some reason) I would have totally told them not to get atom, but the boss ordered it without asking us! We have four ICT suites here. The first thing I did when I arrives was introduce a four year rotating replacement cycle for both the suites and the teachers laptops. The rest of the school gets the left-over hand-me-downs from these replacement cycles, or the departments put their hands in their pockets. When I replaced the first lot of machines I used the RAM from them to boost another suite to keep it going until next summers upgrades. Yer good idea about the ram, but our computer that we need to replace really is only 512MB DDR1, so even with using ram from one suite, we will only get 1GB, need 2GB really for Windows to run really good, plus the graphics card will not support the areo So what sort of hardware spec you think would be good? Quad or Dual Core Processor? 2GB or 4GB RAM? 7200RPM Sata Hard Drive or 32GB SSD
