What type of RAM is it? What mobo is it going into & what is currently installed? How many RAM slots on the mobo? Do they need to be matched pairs? Have you tried just installing one of the new sticks of RAM to see if the machine boots okay. If it does boot install one of the other new sticks. If it still works, you may need matched pairs.

We use ClamWin & since it has been installed we haven't suffered any virus attacks. I now they haven't sorted out real time scanning yet, but I expect it will be if a future update. I have it set to scan every evening & it has picked up a few, but these are deleted & I am informed via Email. We used to use Symantec Anti-Virus (corporate) but this was getting expensive to update. Used AVG for a while, but that started to get expensive also. Asked our Network service technicians & they suggested ClamWin. No complaints here.

You could try using the local administrator acount. This may have been left with a blank password if you are lucky. Once you get in you can then crreate a new local account.

Fair enough. Never noticed it before. I do a bit of gaming, but generally stick to repairs, installs etc.

I haven't used Vista for a while now, can you configure the firewall or turn it off? It could be a firewall issue. Only a thought.

I don't expect this will help, but have you tried running the application in compatibility mode? Sounds more like a network issue with Vista though, but might be worth a shot. Can Vista get the correct access to the folder? I presume Vista actually sees the folder.

The list of information could be very useful. There is so much that could be documented, but where do you stop?

I normally like HP kit. We have nearly all HP laserjet printers on the network, the oldest being a 5si/mx. Got HP laptops, mostly okay, one or two problems though. All out of warranty of course. I am favouring Lenovo (IBM) at present for desktop & laptops. Nice & robust machines.

Yes, totally agree. So I will be doing it in small chunks. I think I have just got lazy in my old age & when you don't have enough time things tend to slip.

Not used Ghost with any success with 2003 server. It was an older version than 10 though. I have used Acronis True Image, but I never needed to restore the image on 2003 server. This is very true. However, I have actually started to document some of the things that could be useful, IP addresses etc, on the task management system that I recently setup. Only started today though, so could take a while to complete. I will probably do a hard copy when I get five minutes (hmmm, let me think, when was the last time I had five minutes) Oh well, it will get done some time. I wish I had a larger team here, well one technician would help I suppose, especially when the sixth form extension is completed. I have nightmares now, god knows what it will be like with another 80 or so machines on the network. Hay ho, get on with it & stop complaining.

Wish I had the time to even think about documenting the network. What with me being the onlt one to look after the whole schools network, servers, client machines etc. etc. The list goes on. I do to much work out of hours anyway. I may start to think about it & it may be a good idea, as my memory aint what it used to be. I think they call it old age Maybe I can do it when I am meant to be sleeping (all of about 4 hours, five if I am lucky) Must admit, this topic has got me actually thinking about documenting the network, if nothing else.

Yes, totally agree aout the younger teachers. Not normally technophobes. We have just had 10 Smartboard 680i put in & I was pleased to walk along the corridor today & see four of them in use, I expect the other may have been couldn't see them though. The ones that I saw though had the younger teachers using them. I thought about implementing quota's but could decide how much to allocate. I looked at the size of the drive on the file server & saw we still had about 200gb out of 400gb free & thought, why bother. Just means more work for me, as I am the only one looking after the network & I have enough work to do at the moment.

We had exactly the same problem with a trolley of ten HP NX6110. Got some more batteries for half of them after about 18 months. Not happy with HP. Recently had one die, got it repaired & it died again. Kept it for spares. Had another one that they had managed to snap the central post out of the power connector. Desoldered the power connector from the first dead machine to replace it, worked a treat. Just been told today that they have done the exact same thing to another one now though. Ham fisted Sixth Formers I am liking Lenovo laptops at present, they seem robust & work real good. I think most laptops have wide screens these days. You would be lucky to get one without I expect.

Instead of copying & pasting in to Paint or whatever, why not just right click on the image & choose 'save picture as' (IE) or 'save image as' (FF). Then just use the insert picture from file option. Less work for the little dears (lol)

If it is starting up with one PSU, but fails when the others are inserted you could have a short somewhere. May not be the mobo, but it is still possible. Check the connections from the PSU's to the mobo, you might find a short.

Normally if you have redundant PSU's only one is doing any real work. The others are there to take over if one goes down. This system may be different of course. It sounds more like the mobo or another component that has failed.

What sort of system are you running? What server OS etc.

We had Roche do an install of a few Whiteboards & projectors a couple of years ago. Had no problem with them. Even though they are based up north, we are down south & got good service from them. We have just had more boards fitted that are excellent. Sound is built in. The boards can be used without anything attached. Switch it on & use the supplied pens to write, anything on the board can be saved to a USB drive for future use or whatever. It may be worth contacting them.

We pay for subscription advantage every year which sets us back around £2,500.00 but that does enable us to purchase licences at a reduced cost when we need them. We paid about £124.00 per licence the last time we got any. This included subs advantage. We are currently on Presentation server 4. We upgraded a couple of years ago, but because we are on subs advantage this didn't cost nearly as much as it would if we had to purchase a fresh. Citrix is expensive & there are alternatives, but I have found it to be by far the best way to run a thin client network. Most of our thin clients are Linux based & are locked down. The newest machines are being supplied by our Network support company. The footprint on these machines is very small. I have plans to mount these on the backs of our TFT monitors. I have one bracket that I trialled & it works a treat, so all you can see is the screen mouse & keyboard. If you wanted a quote, I am sure they would oblige. The quote may come from Surftec, who work along side Precedence. Both are small companies, but they do not charge the earth for products or services. The client machines are currently around £199.00 each. With a hard glass TFT screen & mouse/keyboard package you would be looking at around £340.00, prices may have changed since my last purchase in July.
