Majority of my backbone is still OM1 and works fine. I've installed OM3 and 10GB to 3 IT Suites and Art and that was only because of the large file sizes with photoshop etc. Upgraded switches so all 10GB capable (should i decide I need to a full 10GB backbone) but majority of switches connect at 1GB and then 1GB to desktop. If you are having VOIP i would VLAN the network to separate traffic and as @AButter says VOIP traffic is small so you should be fine. We have 53 phones and all works perfectly fine.

Following on from my previous post http://www.edugeek.net/forums/how-do-you-do/211952-hyper-v-cluster-local-storage-questions.html I looking at a 3 node Hyperconverged system using S2D. I have a quote already from @VeryPC for 3 x Dell PowerEdge R640 but I am need to get 2 additional quotes to present to our governors in order to get funding etc. Someone suggested Stone - so if anyone from Stone would like to contact me, or alternatively if someone can give me a contact for someone stone that would be appreciated. Well either the reboot of servers and switches or the issue fixed by our isp seems have resolved the issues as I’ve had no reported issues today. Fingers crossed all will be ok on Monday

Just the mornings. Nothing has changed on the network since October so not sure why it has suddenly started.

DNS set via DCHP to install servers I supposed anyone on BYOD devices could set different DNS settings manually but not many people connected to BYOD at the moment due to speeds issues and it faster for them to use their own data.

I contacted our ISP to check the connection just incase that was the issue as speedtests were shocking low - anything from 5mbps to 30mbps on a 300MB connection. They have replied back this morning and reported that the Fiber Line Provider resolved an issue on our line. Speed tests now showing sensible speeds again - so I have no idea if that could have caused the issue. If it did then I am puzzled as to why affected apps such as Word/PowerPoint when they were using files stored on the on-premise file server. Will wait to hear from staff if they are still having issues.

I use Impero to wake on lan and not had any issues.

Office 2016 and Office 365 with redirected Appdata folders - which can cause some slow downs but this have been fine for nearly 12 months. Outlook is just one of the programs that are affected but the main one that is noticeable due to it being used by the majority of people. Powerpoint/Word can become not responding before being fine again and all they were doing is typing. As I said - all fine before Christmas and first week back and then suddenly hit with this issue. I am wondering if it could be an Office update causing it as some updates were applied towards the end of December.

Yep, spanning tree all using the same settings. Still scratching my head on this and everything appears to be working fine. The irritating issue is how slow outlook has become. - hit send and receive and it pops up not responding, screen turns white and then suddenly springs back into life. Going to reboot all switches and servers at the end of the school day to see if that cure it. I have asked out ISP to do a line check but I cannot see that being the issue as the slowdown seems to non internet based applications.

Yes we have Adobe CC but we don't have people using the cloud sync Checked switches and all appear normal. DLink Core Fibre Switch, Unifi EdgeMax Lites and all normal. Yes - use smoothwall and that is showing no large transfers and ram/cpu all normal AV is Windows 10 Defender/SCCM Endpoint

Had reports that since Monday the whole school is having issues with computers and applications being slow and sometimes not responding. This can be simply browsing network drives for files to trying to use any application such as powerpoint, word, outlook - where they stop responding and then continue to work as normal. Things I have checked.... No config changes have been made No updates have been applied or trying to install. I have Windows 10 EDU 1803 and 1909 editions exhibiting the same issues. I have ran continuous pings to a number of servers and they all respond as normal with not timeouts I have ran continuous pings to a number of switches and all responded as normal. Switches have Spanning Tree enabled so I am ruling out a loop. VLAN routing seems ok as I can trace route without issue No Backups are taking place, so that should affect things. Anyone anything else they can suggest checking? Cheer in advance. Mark

Automated monthly reports are the way to go. I sent monthly breakdowns to head of departments so they can see who is printing/copying within their department (Helps when they try an complain how much they are being charged for printing) I also send monthly billing reports to our repro person who sorts out the billing for departments.

Thanks for all the replies. Had meeting with the head and she isnt again the idea of laptops but is concern about issues such as if staff forgetting laptops etc and connecting cables etc..... I had pointed out that further investigations were needed as to best way for staff to connect to screens/projectors etc.... So think I may go to Bett this year to have a look at different solutions and also about information about Sharepoint. etc....

I had envisaged that Laptop would be configured as Domain/Azured joined laptops and locked down to prevent "home" software being installed. GPO settings to move documents to One Drive - stop data from being saved locally in case of any issues, data would still be accessible. Displaying to Screens/Projectors can be done via VGA or HDMI or even Miracast depending on what they are showing. - To be honest I haven't looked at this bit in any detail yet. Damages would be paid from departmental budgets - hopefully to encourage staff to look after them and then to answer to HOD and me! I am looking to order extra for occasion such as supply staff and trainees. I would also have some portable DVD drives which can be booked out by staff should they need them to play DVDs - this will require some planning on their part!!

I know there are pro and cons with all solutions and the chances are this will not happen due to cost. But what laptops would you pick?

Desktops are i3, 6GB RAM with SSD drives using local profiles - so logon speeds are less then 10 seconds. Laptops would mean they stay logged on and can close the lid move rooms and then open the lid and carry on from where they left off. I can see it from their point of view in terms of time taken loading things etc - but from a technical point of view and as other have mentioned - more things can go wrong with laptops and some staff have tunnel vision and thinking laptops are better! I also think it is them thinking they can have a laptop for home use as well - as I often get mumbles about they not having laptops for home use and how it impacts on their jobs when it comes to reports etc. So I am just looking at options and costings to present to SLT

In a recent staff survey, staff complained about the time taken having to log off and on including having to load programs etc..... and asked if they could have laptops instead of a fixed desktop computer in each classroom. Normally I am against things like this as laptops are more susceptible to damage etc But if I did look at laptops for staff - what model would you opt for? Cheers

When you say you have the controller host name in DNS for the Inform - what hostname are you using? I have 2 DNS enteries for mine both resolving to the same IP address. Unifi-Controller for the host name - for the web interface I also have unifi used for inform resolution. Only options I have in DHCP for the APs are 03 - Router, 06 - DNS server and 15 - DNS Domain Name
