Smoothwall Memory usage and load average
mdrabble replied to mdrabble's topic in Internet Related/Filtering/Firewall
Checked with ISP and no obvious DDoS at the time - incoming/download traffic was between 50mb - 250mb Only logging I have enabled is any access to 3CX Server and then from BYOD VLAN to internet such as VPN/SMTP access - but I have disabled access to BYOD since yesterday. Since pulling the plug and booting up again, memory usage has been steady at approx 25% Very strange. Next month I am replacing my Hyper-V hosts (HP DL380p Gen8) servers, so may look to reusing one of those to run smoothwall - then will have some decent CPU and Memory and then just need to look at SSD drives for the Gen8 box. Need to check with Smoothwall if they would support the install on 3rd Party Hardware. -
Have you tried moving to the phone to a know working phone socket to check if it will work from there and vice versa - taking a know working phone to the socket with the issue? Do you have any ACL configured on the VLAN port or check the VLAN config against other Phone VLAN ports?

Sadly box is out of warranty. End of July I'm replacing my HyperV hosts so may look at re-purposing one as replacement smoothwall box -
Smoothwall Memory usage and load average
mdrabble replied to mdrabble's topic in Internet Related/Filtering/Firewall
Replaced the drives in Feb with Enterprise class SSD drives as box was out of warranty and with logging enabled, thought SSD would allow quicker write times etc.... CPU is a sing i7, 4770S @3.10Hz Quad Core (hyperthreaded to 8) It is about 5 years old Oddly.... since pulling the plug and powering back up memory is about 25% usage. -

S8 box has just locked up to the point the clock on the LED had frozen. Had to pull the power cable and reboot the box. Never seen a Smoothwall box lockup before. Think it time to start looking for a new box/alternative. -
For the last couple of days our smootwall S8 box has been running very slow. Memory usage is very often 80% upwards continuously and average load is often quote high. Seeing lots of caution x number of access messages - which is no more than usual. A culmination of all this then forces the box to drop internet connection for a short time for before reconnecting. Before I log a call with smoothwall, anyone any idea to what the cause could be?

Been tidying up security settings etc and the user used to Bind AD was a Domain Admin, which I am looking to change to a stanard user with delegated access. I'm looking at this smoothwall document - https://help.smoothwall.net/FilterFirewall/Content/4Services/1Authentication/2Directories/1Microsoft/Add.htm Prerequisites In Active Directory, choose or configure a non-privileged user account to use for connecting the domain. The Smoothwall Filter and Firewall stores this account’s credentials, for instance, when backing-up and replicating settings. The account that you use needs permission to modify the Computers container, including being able to create keytab files across the domain or forest. To delegate these permissions to a non-privileged user account, choose Delegate Control on the Computers container, create a custom task to delegate and, for Computer objects, grant the full control, create and delete privileges. Am I reading this right as it wants Full Control as well as create and delete privilege's?? Wouldn't full control give those anyway - or should it be give full control to Create and Delete only? Cheers.

I can just hear end users when we have to roll it out Providing deployment and management doesn’t change dramatically I’ll happily listen to users complain how different it looks and how it will take them ages to work out where things are etc…..

SLT agreed to it after I forwarded on the NCSC warning about schools being targeted and they even said that more and more places are requiring MFA so most staff should be aware of it and possibly using it elsewhere. School IP has been set as a trusted location so wont prompt for MFA. Have set MFA for outside of school and to re-prompt every 60 days on devices they have signed in on and ticked stay signed in. Have emailed all staff to warn them about the introduction of MFA from September - so far only IT Support use MFA for Office 365 From September all staff will require MFA for Office 365 and RDS when outside of school - and there will be no exceptions.
-
Does anyone have a PDF/Word document MFA setup guide for staff? Will be introducing it in September and trying to save reinventing the wheel if someone else has one Cheers
-
Was thinking of enabling Geo-Blocking for Students as from September staff will be using MFA
-
Had a compromised student account - this student has been compromised twice, so going to have a gentle talk to her this morning. Any downsides to enabling Geo-blocking all countries except the UK with Azure and Office 365? Cheers

Turned out to be a firmware issue - I had checked the DLink site and they only had upto 2.49 listed. They sent me a link for 2.61 and soon as I applied it, everything started working after the reboot
-
Thank for the head up - yep missing jumper on E49 according to the manual I've just downloaded.
-
I have a room of HP Z210 Workstations which all display the same issue - where any changes I make in the BIOS are not saved I go through make changes, save the changes and reports as changes being saved but it hasnt. Anyone any ideas? - though it could have been a jumper issue but cannot see any bios related jumpers. Cheers

All ports configures as Trunk ports and configure same on both DXS Switches. Network tester shows VLAN/Data packets hitting the port, so traffic is hitting the port - it is literally like the light is on but no-one is home. If all else fails may ditch the stack and connect them by 2x10Gb LAG connections
-
Just connecting the edge switches to a single DXS. So If I plug an edge switch into the 1st switch in the stack it connects fine. - link lights, DHCP, etc.... If I then unplug the edge switch and connect to the 2nd switch in the stack, I get link lights but nothing else. It is almost like a routing issue of some kind but since the switches are stacked and act as one I cannot see how it would be.......
-
I have 2 Dlink DXS‑3600‑32S with the EM Stacking Module as my core Fibre Switch. I have enabled stacking on the switches and I can seem the stack in the web interface and cli - which suggests all is working ok and until now I have not had anything connected to the 2nd DXS until today. Any edge switches in the 1st DXS are fine Any edge switch i connect to the 2nd DXS, gets a link light but refuses to talk to the network. I have a fluke tester and it confirms connection is good and can see VLAN packets but that is all that happens - it doesnt get a DHCP address and unable to ping anything. Anyone any suggestions what I can look at next? I have opened a ticket with DLink, but I can imagine response times being slow..... Cheers

Use to use a generic AD user with no home drive or any other kind of access except for internet access. It used a script which ran at night to generate a random password and then email it to reception and us. Worked well before we moved to UniFi and used their guest system.

Purchased 2 x Samsung 970 EVO Plus, 500 GB, M.2 stick to go in the PCI card and now the Gen8 Server is now seeing the card and sticks as "Other Mass Storage Controller" - so that is a good sign........ However..... Server 2019 refusing to install on them as it says about may not boot due to BIOS Settings - even though i've set it as the primary boot device
