  1. Seems like a pretty fundamental flaw... how about we just don't pay our annual MS subs? If enough of us do that it might make M$ sit up and take notice.
  2. Could I be affected by this as well? I am seeing the same errors and inconsistent GP application, but we are a single broadcast domain and DHCP server is 2008 :/ No DHCP helpers in use.. WOrkstations are not SP1'd yet.. just gonna try one now and see how that goes
  3. If my cabling all came back to the one location then I'd go for one of those new chassis you mentioned, would be ideal. Either way I don't think you'll be disappointed A further word to the OP, 3com have been bought out by HP completely, so whilst you can probably still get hold of later 3com kit it will more than likely be going EoL soon whilst HP finish asymilating 3com. At least with 3com they were still making access points for their managed controllers several years after they were released, so it's not suprising all our kit is now EoL following HP's buyout, with no easy migration option. HP's product lifecycle is rediculously short as well. So it looks like your choices are either HP or Netgear
  4. we are a large campus with 2 large buildings, each with a GSM7328FS at their core. These are connected via 10gig modules & OM3 to a GSM7352S switch which has our servers connected to it, effectively giving us a 10gig backplane, then 1gig to each satellite switch in each building. It's never missed a beat. You may also be interested to know you can use any compatible tranceiver in your netgear switches, unlike HP who lock them down to their own. £45 cheap tranceivers? No problem!
  5. Have to say, it's been pretty smooth for us, only thing we stumbled upon when doing testing was also planning for everyone to reset their passwords so they could be hashed and sync'd with Google Good luck No regrets here. Thus far..
  6. Did you ever get sorted with this? We are in the same boat... INT/EXT interface on same subnet....
  7. I you have a password policy you could have everyones password changed naturally within 2-3 months (ours is 90 days force change). I suppose the only other way would be true LDAP auth, but then you have to start punching holes in your firewall
  8. IIRC, we still needed the personnel link between P7 & FMS to generate salary reports... not sure why, some financy reason I guess :/
  9. That's an excellent result - doesn't suprise me as Zen are the dogs for the price. We too are looking at them (Fibre office pro - but not sure if 500gig will be enough given our lot). How much do you use do you know?
  10. Gosh, I smiled when I saw this topic - have foolishly managed to do this several times :/ All you need is here: sha1hexfltr - Active Directory sha1 hex password filter - Google Project Hosting This is the most secure way of doing it. Only drawback is you'll need to get your users to change their passwords for AD to capture and hash their passwords following install on your DC(s). You then sync this hash using Google/Postini directory sync, it's usually stored in the "division" attribute of the user object. Any probs post back.
  11. How many machines do you have? It's not uncommon to run Sophos EM on site and update from that instead. Otherwise is there an exception you can setup in sonicwall or something?
  12. SIMS/FMS is also totally SQL server based We looked at corerro too, it was great for everyday finance/reporting (the e-procurement rocked my socks!) but we would still be doing a lot of faffing around between SIMS <-> FMS <-> Carero resource just to do personnel, and given 80%+ of our budget is on staffing costs, just didnt seem worth the move. As a minimum given the sheer amount of money capita must be making from the academies sector right now, FMS should have a long overdue bomb up its backside. I hardly call making a few changes to VAT cost centre chargeback and few new reports as "significant changes"! C'mon Capita, sort it out!
  13. Hi all, I've been tasked to look into clocking in/out /roll call systems for our staff, due to health and safety, staff blatantly not working contracted hours and all the rest of it. Anyone ever looked into something like this before? (This is almost as obscure as the "school bell" system someone once asked about) Not essential but is there anything that can "integrate" with SIMS Personnel? Cheers
  14. Glad you got it working. I have a working autocad 2010 suite if (god forbid) you ever get lumbered with that and need help. A mix of GPO MSI's, WMI checks and scripts. An absoloute dogs dinner. But it works
  15. Hi, Sorry for the late reply also. Save your time. I created a new deployment and tried dozens of other things. By the time I tried all that and failed, Autocad suite 2010 landed on my desk, so I promptly got to work on that. Sorry I couldn't help
  16. I'll put you in touch with the (external) mechanical engineer who did our new build - I provided hardware/heast specs (with some added on for future) and asked for a modest air con unit for the server room. He came back and had fitted 2x monster AC units that are split/duty shared!! And if one fails, the other one kicks in. Neat system, needless to say, we no longer have green cred
  17. Not sure what Capita's motivation behind re-licensing is but we've had to handover the equivalent of a full time technicians salary to do this (old licence was bought by LEA). And they had the bloody cheek to put the annual maintenance up too! :/
  18. As glennda. Just get a fibre between old and new building if they are on same site. Chances are they will be digging for ducting anyway to link fire alarm etc, so whack your name down for some space in there for a fibre. But plan your topology in doing so. You want to keep things nice, simple and consolidated for yourself and in this case, Running sites would be overkill if you can avoid it. Afterall.. are you getting a payrise for the increased responsibility/workload? Didn't think so It is sensible to be migrating to Windows7, and given that XP is 10 years old and there is almost no support from microsoft for it now, dare I say it your management have made a good recommendation
  19. Hi All, Could anyone provide some direction into setting up a WX for web portal authentication? Currently I am operating one encrypted SSID on a network with a single VLAN (NOT the default VLAN as I don't use that). This works fine. We configure wireless clients with the WPA key and away they go. What I would like to do is now configure another SSID (clear/unencrypted SSID) that students, teachers etc can associate with and authenticate via the web portal in order to use it. I am using development kit to try this out, but so far I have a cloned WX4400 with production config running, and I have setup another VLAN on the WX to service the clear SSID, with a radio profile etc. I have setup a switch with my VLANS and I have configured the temporary DHCP server in MSS and successfully obtained an expected IP address from this port on the WX on the VLAN I have configured. I can also ping the host interface address for the vlan. Do I have this concept correct - as the access point is now running 2 SSIDS and I want to keep traffic seperate, the access point needs to tag traffic from itself to the switch depending what SSID it is coming from? and do I need to configure the port on my edge switches that my AP's are connecting to to expect only tagged or untagged traffic? Presumably they need to be set to only allow "tagged" traffic now, as the AP's would effectively be doing the tagging depending on source SSID? No matter what I try I cannot even associate on the newly created clear SSID. It is "visible" but not associating, let alone even getting an IP address or redirecting me to the portal log on. Anyone help me get this old dinosoar going!? I could do it via 3WXM or CLI if need be. Thanks
  20. I've just been onto our sharepoint machine (which does our SIMS Learning Gateway) however when checking a few things I noticed there was a shed load of user profiles in the c:\users directory. Now these appear to be users who would logon to the sharepoint site and would have no access to interactive logon - question is why are user profiles being created in c:\users for these users and how can it be stopped? It's WSS3 running on Server 2008 Any ideas? Cheers
  21. Couldn't believe it when I read about this. Farcical.
  22. Never mind, it was the catalogURL that was wrong Typical Apple... fix one thing and break 10 others
  23. Hi, I am having a similar problem. In my case, My server is 10.6.5, and all my clients are 10.6x (so I am not running a mixed 10.5/10.6 environment). My clients are configured with the default catalog for 10.6, so the catalog URL looks something like: http://osx.domain.internal:8088/index.sucatalog If I oepn this up in Safari I can see the file and its contents. The servername is correct. if I then open up http://osx.domain.internal:8088/index-leopard-snowleopard.merged-1.sucatalog this looks identical. So am I correct in that if I am running a vanilla 10.6 environment my catalog URL should be http://osx.domain.internal:8088/index.sucatalog ? In this configuration, when I run software update the Mac client just says there are no new software updates available, when I know for a fact there are at least 4 (from when connecting directly to apple update) Thanks
  24. What do schools using SLG put on their home tab? At the moment we have just a white page and it looks pretty cack. Any ideas what we could put on there to liven it up a bit (that we dont have to spend time updating!?) Im not too fussed about other tabs as they show the planner/timetable for staff and students. Thanks.
  25. SIMS/Cunninghams, but secondary. I think you could do a lot better than a cunninghams solutions personally... given the amount of babysitting our cashless system needs.
