You sure it's 1054? 1054 is usually "A thread could not be created for the service. " 1053 is The service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely fashion. Could you confirm which you have?

Ah yes a webserver would be an instance where per server would be useful.

If i'm correct you can also add "per user" CALS into the mix. This would be useful in a situation whereby you have 20 users. Each has a workstation and a laptop. They could connect to 2 servers from either machine. Per server licensing = 80 CALS (1 CAL per device * 2 servers). Per Device = 40 CALS (40 client devices). Per user = 20 CALS. As far as i was aware most licensing now was either the per user or per device mould. Per server is pretty much out the window. In a school it is highly unlikely you would ever use per user as it is extremely unlikely that you will have more client machines that users.

I have a couple of virtual servers. Not really pushing the boat out with them yet. One is hosting Nagios on Ubuntu. Another is running a server for our IT dept. Basically hosting fireworks helpdesk, Altiris and OpenFire. I'm going to gradually push the limits of our host server to see how much i can run and see if i can de-commision any of our other servers. You dont necessarily need a second server set up, you could move your Virtual servers onto any machine(s) with VMWare on it. I.e. your Beefy Server goes bang, you could move the images of your virtual machines onto several workstations as a short-term measure. You dont *need* a SAN, but if you dont use one be aware that your Virtual Servers Storage is dependant on your hosts storage. A SAN would certainly help. Backup is essential. Best option is to be able to back up the virtual servers via the host rather than individually. This would mean you could be back up and running in a matter of minutes. SQL products will be very memory intensive as well as having lots of disk access. If you are using a SAN the disk space / access isnt really an issue. If it's a beefy server and you can allocate several GB of RAM and 2 virtual CPUs, to the Virtual Server it should cope.

Exchange is on the box and it would be possible to set up auto forwarding to the next boxes, but we have only had our internal exchange box for 18 months. Dont want it to go to waste. My main concern is that we're being held over a barrel if the terms change. Moving staff mailboxes over, only to move them back in 12 months would be a complete PITA.

An on-site VLE is my suggestion, however SLT in their infinate wisdom have gone with an external one. SSAT are paying and we get lots of content included which was the clincher, i think.

We have gone with a 3rd party MS Sharepoint solution. I would like to keep our exchange email server on site but have sharepoint look into it. I know the standard webparts will connect to our server and ask us for our username / password. Is there any other webpart that can do this but store the username and password? Either that or some sort of SSO solution would be good, but i wont have access to the 3rd party servers. Any ideas?

Anybody have any idea how to set up a networked printer on these? We have several suites all running them, I want the printer to be set on a suite by suite basis, i.e the TCs in room x dont get the printer in room z. Any ideas? Thanks!

Congrats. We tied the knot last august. Hasnt really made much difference at all. Although it was a fantastic excuse for an amazing holiday! erm, i mean honeymoon.

We have about 15 2600n in school. We've not had any problems setting s2003 to do the print sharing. Works like a charm for us.

Does the XP CD/image have SP2 on it? If not you may need to slipstream a SP2 CD. I've heard of various problems of XP SP1 giving BSOD on newer machines during installation or booting.

Not a bug as such but i've noticed that all links to topics etc. open in a new window. I prefered the old way of opening it in the same window and if i want it in a new window or tab I do it myself. Not sure what others think though? Anybody agree? Other than that the site seems good. Quite different but looks very professional.

We actually did around 160. 60 of those on TS. It worked, but there were issues with screen size, etc. Why do you have to click verify and unlock 100 times. We do it in bulk.

If something is easy to use, it's inherently less powerful. Take your pick. We've discussed proxy issues under Linux and specifically with apt on several occasions. Here's a thread on the subject. http://www.edugeek.net/index.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&t=7690 If you fix your proxy problem and use apt-get or preferably aptitute. These will sort your dependacy problem out. If all else fails, remove nagios-plugins-extra and start again. By time i read this comment i'd removed the nagios-plugins-extra and that worked out ok, i must be getting a little better maybe. I just copied the check_snmp into the libexec folder and it works. I am getting an Unknown status and no data recieved from device but atleast i'm reaching the device. Thanks for all your help.

It's not Linux' fault you don't know what your doing. Lol, like the way you added it afterwards i've admitted i dont know what i'm doing with linux. My point is that sometimes it can be a tad difficult to use, or at least to set-up / configue an app. Once it's up and running it's great but it's that initial set-up. Anyway, i'm actually semi-converting to linux. I'm building myself a linux media center with Linux MCE / MythTV. So i am trying........ ANyway, back on the thread... For some reason using apt-get install nagios-plugins doesn't manage to get a connection. I'm assuming it's to do with the proxy settings. So i've gone into package manager searched for nagios-plugins and marked all for installation. but then i get an error: /var/cache/apt/archives/nagios-plugins-stadard_1.4.5-2ubuntu0.1.i386.deb: trying to overwrite '/usr/lib/nagios/plugins/check_ifoperstatus', which is also in package nagios-plugins-extra it seems to be a dependancy prob, i thin the extra plugins got installed before the standard. any ideas?
