  1. I should click the links and read the articles, but... ...The though of putting sticky tape and fairy liquid into a blender at the same time, and switching it on....It's tooo good to be true
  2. Not currently, but have been heavily researching and running small scale trials for a while. Our local primary has a trolley that we are in the process of perfecting it's setup. We're still discussing at a senior leadership level what this school want to be doing long term for ICT.
  3. I thought it was being heavily researched into as a possibility though. Intel are banging up against the limite of Moores Law as we speak. They're also running short on exotic minerals they can replace silicon with. Another couple of decades at most and classical microprocessors aren't going to be able to get any faster.
  4. For the PS4. I'll be buying that day 1! As for the PS1 version. My 2yr old nephew loves playing that on my brothers PS3. Scarely good at it as well!
  5. If you explained the iPad to someone in 1975 (when the Altair 8080 was released) I'm sure they would have said the same. It's been barely 4 decades! A bigger question - is there actually any evidence quantum computing will speed up computations over traditional binary? Skim reading the article suggest their implementations doesn't. So what's the point?
  6. No, think of that as a cheap trial. Don't want to spend £10,000's on managed wifi if you're not going to use. If you want to scale up to that level you'll be looking at getting serious quotes for a full managed wifi installation. I wouldn't attempt it on anything less - world of pain. When you scale up you'd relocate the Mac Mini to your server room and centrally manage from there. If you're looking 7/8 departments each with 60 iPads - that's 480 devices! I think you'll be looking at a much stronger MDM solution than Apple Configurator
  7. A laptop cooled to 20miliKelvin. Makes a change from the heat burns of todays models
  8. Based on this, a trial. I'd keep is small and simple to start off then. Something like a single trolley with power and syncing capabilities. A Mac Mini for iTunes and Configurator (MDM) perminantly on top the trolley. A single Airport Extreme on the trolley to be plugged into a local network port when the trolley is wheeled into the class room. Give it it's own unique SSID and attach the iPads to that. Possibly even include a USB printer plugged into the Airport for Airprint. Only other thing to look at would be either Google Drive or setting up a webserver with WebDAV to access network drives. My apologies. I may have come off a little obtuse. We do get the odd teacher/HoD asking this type of question...
  9. Obviously not using the Kelvin scale then What's the relative tempurature in Celsius or Farenheit?
  10. The right solution depends on a number of question, including... Type of school? Size of school? Are they only going to be used in the one classroom? How many iPads are you looking at? How many in one classroom? Will you buy more at a later date/expand the system? If you are looking at more than a couple of classrooms and/or want full roaming around the site then you'll want a wireless survey done. Find 3 or 4 reputable companies and ask them to survey they site and offer quotes. Try to get them to quote on more than one technology (Muru, Ruckus, etc). There's also the management of the iPads to consider. So iPad trollies, charging, Mobile Device Management software, iTunes volume license accounts. Companies like Insight can help advise here on a complete solution and help install/set up. Edit: Go to the NM now! Involve him/her as early as possible. They are paid to come up with the majority of the answers you are looking for! They'll also have the expertese to ask the right questions and now roughly were to look for answers.
  11. You're right - it was 300mb That's me sleep posting again.
  12. 486DX2/50. 8mb Ram. 300Gb Hard - compressed. Windows 95. And ^ this. On a 14.4kbps US Robotics Dial. Anyone want to guess how slow that computer was Also had CompuServe for a while (before they were consumed by AOL). That was a pretty good network/bbs/community.
  13. I'm in exactly the same boat, currently got an iPhone 4S that needs upgrading. 64Gb iPhone 5S is stupid money. Choice for me came down to Sony Xperia Z2 vs HTC One M8. M8 slightly cheaper. Also reviews look good. Supports upto 128Gb microSD. I'm going for the M8 if Orange/EE can sort themselves out (apparantly they need to unbundle my iPhone/iPad so they can cancel the iPad contract and upgrade the phone. Cant do this instantly, that'd be too easy, have to wait till next bill for the computers to be rebooted or something - arrggghhhh!!!!!)
  14. Aren't all operating systems "disk operating systems" - among other essential low level tasks? Also, is it MS-DOS or MS-Disk Operating System? I know that's what the letters stand for and mean, but the products name is MS-DOS, no? So what the Beeb ment to write was "DOS computers were popular in the 1980s and early 1990s". Or at the very least capatalise the O and S in operating system to denote name rather than function?
  15. The core OS is based very heavily on NeXTSTEP which is itself based on a Mach Kernel and BSD Unix (AFAIK). The UI on the other hand is largely based on previous versions of MacOS. Also I'm pretty certain OS X doesn't use an X display server (although I think one is available/included for POSIX compatibility). Mac OS X Server 1.0 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Chrome
  16. I'd also point out that OS X's UI (AFAIK) isn't '*nix based'. And going back to *nix UI roots is a very scary place indeed...

    GPO Advice

We tend to do something similar to... School Users OU ----Internet GPO for All Users ----Security GPO for All Users ----Software Install GPO for All Users ----Staff Users Sub-OU --------Internet GPO for Staff Users --------Security GPO for Staff Users --------Software Install for Staff Users -----------Teachers Sub-OU ----------------Internet GPO for Teachers ----------------etc ----Student Users Sub-OU --------Internet GPO for Student Users --------Security GPO for Student Users --------Software Install for Student Users Obviously GPO's only actually exist where there is a need for a policy setting at that level (so there isn't actually a Teachers Internet GPO - but there could be if it was needed). Policies are set at the lowest common level. Computer Policies are disabled in User GPO's and User Policies disabled in Computer GPO's. As you say, it's a trade off between granular policy control and login/boot up speed.
  18. Too much hassle trying to get that yellow text on a blue background
  19. I don't know. I can kind of understand it. There's a certain charm/ease to WordPerfect 5 on DOS (I know he uses WordStar - never used that myself). If your writing a 1000 page fantasy manuscript perhaps it better to K.I.S.S.?
  20. I don't think that figure is too surprising. Although the number of silver surfers are on the increase, I bet tha vast majority of that 6.4m are over 50. About 10m people in the UK are over 65 (The ageing population - UK Parliament) and you can easily add another 10m between 50 and 65. Or to put it another way (if all 6.4m are over 50): 1/4 over 50's have never used the internet, 3/4 have. (very approx. top of my head, early morning maths)
  21. It's a really good game (as is GTA 5), I enjoyed it. Hopefully there'll be a sequal soon.
  22. AFAIK this policy can only be set in the Default Domain Policy.
  23. I've pre-ordered the Gold Edition from the US PS4 Store. Set up a US account years ago when it was the only way to play Rock Band, it's come in handy since. For £48 ($80) I got - Full game, extra 1hr timed exclusive PS4 single player content, 2hrs T-Bone single player DLC, Season Pass for future single player DLC. All in I'm happy. Don't usually pre-order but this time I thought why not since I knew I was buying at release anyway. For an extra £5.50 I picked up a copy of Flashback 2013 at the same time - brilliant game!
  24. Doesn't smell quiet right - an unused kinect was taking up processing power preventing the XB1 from achieving PS4 level resolutions and framerates? Is that what they are saying? By completely disconnecting the kinect they can free up the resouces from the kinect that the game wasn't using to start off with?
  25. It's an interesting move. I seriously didn't think XB1 sales where going that badly. Sure they're lagging behind PS4 but as they point out themselves PS4 are in 40 terratories compared to 13 for XBox. Isn't the XB1 the second fastest selling console of all time, beaten only by PS4?
