Game of Thrones/ASOIAF: New preview chapter from Book 6, Winds of Winter
tmcd35 replied to sonofsanta's topic in General Chat
I've read 1-5 but not really interested so much in 6 and 7 now the TV series has caught up and is starting to diverge a bit more. I'll probably get back to the books once (if) both 6 and 7 have been released...- 2 replies

Got to say, when the time comes, I'm interested in picking up a secondhand Wii-U and probably secondhand copy of this game. Even if I only pick up the Wii-U for this game, it looks interesting - in a similar way to Final Fantasy XV looks interesting. I think there are one or two other Wii-U games that have caught my eye but I very much see it as a second system with a very limited library. Pretty much Nintendo that you can't get on PS4.

According to the news last night both Norwich constituencies are major battle grounds this time, so I guess my vote will count! (I claim the deciding vote of the election!) I'm in Norwich North and incumbent Tory Chloe Smith with a 9.3% majority, I don't think she'll hold it this time. Looking at Wiki were were Tory from '83 to '97 then Labour '97 to '09. My gut says we'll swing back to Labour this time, the LibDem swing voters like me will return back and bolster the Labour numbers.

Cameron looked way out of his comfort zone. To my mind, after Farage who came across has if he was interviewing for leader of the BNP, Cameron came of worst in this debate. I think he's just in an unfortunate position. Most of the time he was talking the most sense - if you call the 'honest peace broker' so be it. Lol, here! here! Personally I think Milliband would do well with a minority government should LD, SNP and Plaid Cyrmu each get enough sets to keep the Tories and UKIP at bay and keep Labour from over spending. That's the outcome I'm hoping for this time.

refreshing my memory from their policy site (The Green Party | Home), They talk of think like the "Citizens Income" to be paid to everyone regardless of welfare need, and "Restoritive Justice" instead of retribution. From what I understand of their ideas (which admittedly is pretty minimal) they want create a world were no one needs to work unless they want to, and rape and murder are fine so long as you are really sorry for doing it (I'm probably over egging it a bit). They seem just a little too socialist for my liking, almost the acceptable face of communism which always sounds fine in theory but never really works (or at least non of the examples of the last century have worked without failing or moving towards capitalism). I agree Labour is very far removed from the socialist left and indeed a little too far right of center. But since the choice in PM is realistically only between Ed and Dave - yes, I'd much prefer Ed and given how far right Dave has taken the Tories, I'd sooner not trust another 5 years to him. I'm voting for what I think is best for the country, and as much as Ed is not ideal, I think the party he represents is a better bet for us right now in terms of the executive. If LD has any real chance at the top job I'd happily vote them instead. For me, this time, it's about getting the Tories out. It's a horrible closed minded self serving two party system we've go to play with.

[Election15] Are you going to watch the leaders TV debate tonight?
tmcd35 replied to SovietRussia's topic in General Chat
I saw the first one on 4OD the day after it broadcast. Actually found myself warming more to Ed Milliband. I thought this one was slated for the 4th so nearly missed it until I saw it on BBC news. Yeah, I'm watching. I think the format of this one is better with all major parties now represented and debating between them. We might actually see some real differences show or get some compelling reasons for Greens or UKIP. (I'm not holding my breath though). -
Have Tesco's or Asda not got their mobile phone apps doing this yet? Seems an obvious move to make.
-
Ideologically, like most of us here it seems, I am closest to the Greens. That said, reading their manifesto fills me with dread. Some of their policies make the Monster Raving Loony Party seem sensible. As someone else pointed out - Tree Hugging Loonies. In terms of policy it scares me how much I do agree with UKIP, but only for one or two individual policies. Taken as a whole they seem only slightly more palatable than the Tories. Taking my political persuasion and the policies being put forward I should really be voting Lib Dem, as I did last time. But this time I feel voting Lib Dem is giving the Tories the keys to Downing Street for another five years. Unlike last time, I'm left feeling it a two party choice this time. Labour or Tory. Having lived through the Thatcher/Major years and now the Cameron years, I really do feel the country was at it's best during the Blair years. Things like the bedroom tax have been a stark reminder of what exactly a Tory government means, and if anything they have lurched further right over the past 5 years, while Labour have pulled back a little towards the center ground. So, I'll be voting Labour, because I think it's what the country needs at this time. Hopefully in the future we'd be given the chance at proportional representation again, we royally mucked that up in 2010, and can move to a system were smaller parties have more power and voting for convictions isn't seen as a wasted vote. I do hope the likes of Greens, Lib Dem and UKIP do better this time and we get another hung parliament, that if Labour could form the minority or coalition government would be the ideal outcome. But I think the risk of another 5 years of Tory governance is too great to do my part in voting for that outcome - like I did last time. In terms of personal ideology, I think we are a capitalist nation and I do believe that capitalism is a necessary evil. However it need counterbalancing by democratic socialist governments, a conservative party is the worst outcome for a capitalist nation (see America). I think that's probably why China have been doing so well economically of late (not that I want us to try an emulate China).

Probably worth double checking how you want to set up the Mac and what the terms of the qualifying license upgrade is. I have a feeling you need to replace the original OS with the upgrade one from EES - so no bootcamp or virtual machines. You need to uninstall OS X from the mac and install Windows in its place... For servers - volume licence versions of the OS, including EES, are full products not upgrades. You don't need an original OS on the server, just the license from EES or other VL agreement. Edit: Just double checked out of curiosity and it seems if you have Software Assurance with your upgrade licence then you can use bootcamp and run both OS X and Windows on the same machine.

As far as I know yes. That should automatically set up the routing table entries needed to NAT between the connections.
-
Do you have any firewalls enabled on either VM, they could be getting in the way. Try disabling them first, if that works then you can re-enable and work out the relevant exceptions. Also, have you explicitly told Windows on VM1 to share it's internet connection on it's external NIC?

You buy CAL's either Per User or Per Device - it's up to you, which ever will work out cheaper. Rember CAL's are supposed to live and die with the user/device so when new users/devices replace old user/devices (staff leave, new year group, replacement IT suite) then you need to buy new CAL's. Almost always, in schools Per Device is the cheapest route because you don't want to be buying CAL's for each and every students (££££'s). As others have suggested, EES can usually work out even cheaper but its value depends heavily on you planed upgrade cycle since it is an annual subscription and other agreements are perpetual licences.

[website] How close are you to the political centre?
tmcd35 replied to sparkeh's topic in Jokes/Interweb Things
On Political Compass and similar I tend to come out closest to The Green Party in ideology. On manisfesto comparison sites, like: https://voteforpolicies.org.uk/ or https://uk.isidewith.com/political-quiz, I tend to favour mostly Lib Dem Policies and then Labour. I've not found any complete fits though. Depending on individual policy I could be Lib Dem, Labour, Green, or even UKIP. Even then the policies selected rarely really reflect my views, more the best matches as of now. -
Been doing part of this for years, and refining improving the process as we go. It's still not perfect but we are in a good place now. We have a full asset database and every item at the very least has their replacement cost listed. We have an annual revolving IT budget that takes into account replacement cost and expected life cycles for all IT equipment. The only real exception off the top of my head is cabling and network cabinets.

Clarkson return not ruled out: Jeremy Clarkson: Return not ruled out, says senior BBC figure - BBC News You couldn't make this up!

Hi, I'm in the process of setting up a new file server using Windows 2012R2. It had 5 storage volumes that are thin provisioned parity spaces from a single central storage pool. 3 of the volumes are for shared data, 2 for virtual machine images. For the 3 shared data volumes I want data duplication turned on. On 2 volumes it is working perfectly and I am seeing 26% and 49% dedeuplication rates respectfully. However, on the 3rd volume it keeps turning off. I keep turning it on but one I go back and check the next morning it is disabled again. The problem is this is on our home drives volume - the one I'd expect to see the best gains from dedupe. Anyone know why this could be happening or have suggestions on how I could fix it? Thanks

Someone will no doubt correct me if I'm wrong, but faster RAM usually runs fine at a lower speed if the mobo doesn't support it's maximum speed. If Everymac suggests 1066Mhz, then buy the 1600Mhz chip and it will either run at that speed or slow down to accommodate the hardware. Better still, go on eBuyer and see if you can find a suitable 1066Mhz chip that matches the specs reported on Everymac, or use Crucial site to select the exact compatable stick for that machine.
-
What does it say for that model on Everymac?
-
I'd start by not buying the RAM from Apples website! Probably the most expensive place you could source it from. Check you machine on Everymac or with Crucial and then order the generic equivalent from eBuyer.
-
Find the model on EveryMac: Mac Specs, Prices, Answers and Comparison @ EveryMac.com, Est. 1996 - it'll should tell you the exact correct memory specs for your machine.

I guessed that was the case, although a ballsy move considering both of them have been forging pretty decent hosting careers with the Beeb outside of Top Gear. Jeremy on the other hand as been relegated to DVD Christmas specials for a while now. My guess, if Jeremy is sacked, they'll both agree to remain with Top Gear rather than risk jeopardizing their other works with the Beeb.

A.K.A. old geezer reminiscing. This thread: http://www.edugeek.net/forums/tv-movies/151545-what-streaming-channels-do-you-subscribe.html - made me think of radical changes the way I consume TV has shifted over the years. Pre-93 - 1x 22" TV in the living room, colour. Four channels and a VHS recorder. Yes I was born before channel 4 but don't remember it, and I know Sky launched in '88/89 for the rich families among you. Everyone had to agree what to watch, watch it together, and if you wanted something beyond what the four channels offered it meant a walk to the nearest video shop to higher some tapes (which often needed rewinding), this is how I first saw Star Trek TNG. '93 - Analogue Sky. 16 Channels. I remember Astra 1D launching doubling the channels and UK Gold playing David Bowies 'Golden Years' on their pre-launch test card. 3 Movie channels and MTV! Discovery Channel showing programs we'd never seen 100 times before! Daytime documenteries are a big thing. Two's Country and Bob Ross painting 'Happy Trees'. '95 - Cable comes to our area, I convince parents to switch. Multi-room! Before sky did multi-room. I could watch Babylon 5 in my bedroom while the family watched Eastenders on the main set! '97 - Sky Digital and the explosion of TV channels with little or no content. 10 Movie channels, 20 Music channels, Discovery still showing the same tired old episodes of Two's Country. '01 - 24 and Lost. The start of binge watching. Buying DVD box sets to watch the series all at once instead of waiting for Sky to show them. '10 - PlayTV. Freeview DVR. Although both DVR's and FreeView had been around for awhile it seemed everything came together with Freeview and PlayTV. Only the 30 or so core channels. Record live TV while watching pre-recorded shows. Simple UI. This for me is when the decline of live TV finally happened. I'd stack up shows on the HD and watch them at my leisure. '12 - 60mbps broadband. The end of live TV forever! Binge watch everything. Internet speeds fast enough to download and stream reliably. Torrents, iPlayer, Netflix. '14 - YouTube. Again been around for a while but I never 'got it'. I think I do now. If we can find reliable ways of backing content creators through subscriptions like Patreon and Ad revenue then there's still a lot of scope for YouTube to change TV almost as much as Netflix have been with their day 1 complete seasons of quality original shows like House of Cards. Okay, bit of a long ramble, and silly trip down memory lane - but as I say that other thread just made be sit back and think how much things have changed in a short space of time and question more were TV is going. Thought I'd share
