  1. 100% agree - no argument on that front from me. So you're answer is to victimise the majority on the actions of the minority? These people exist, they will always exist no matter how you rig the system. They are not the vast majority of claiments. For a single person the maximum in benefits you can claim is somewhere around £110 per week. Think about that for a second, £110 per week, it's nothing. Because people who have at most £110 per week income (any more and I believe you wouldn't qualify for housing benefit anyway) are being asked to pay figures like £20 per week for each 'unused bedroom' in their property from that meagre income even if the council have no smaller properties to rehouse them in. I may agree this levy was fair if full rent payers were charged extra for unused rooms, they are not. * figures based on single person for simplicity. Couples and children will add to the income, obviously, but its not the £26000 per year the Daily Mail likes to shout about
  2. Hi, We've used Xibo, ShowPoint, and OneLAN at various points in the past to display content on out two reception digital signage TV's. However, what we are after now is a slightly different, more dynamic, solution and I'm struggling to find a suitable solution. We use two big whiteboards in our foyer which staff use to write messages on at the beginning of the school day. ("Joe Smith and MaX Davies see Mrs Wilson in H2 at Lunch", "Music rehearsals in hall after school", "7x3 in ICT3 Period2"). It's a big part of the school culture that everyone looks at the boards on their way in of a morning and checks for notices relevant to them (yes I know form tutors should be reading this stuff out during registration). The problem is the whiteboards do look a bit of a mess. I can't help thinking their has to be a better technical solution, but I can't see it. I thought Xibo+Twitter it's open to abuse and doesn't allow enough tweets to be displayed. I thought Google Forms but then the issue becomes display the data in the underlying spreadsheet neatly. RSS feed into Xibo - but how do staff add to the feed easily? Ideally we'd like staff to e-mail a dedicated mailbox that is picked up and displayed. Looking again at OneLAN and also MediaCAT but not 100% sure these are the right solutions. Anyone got any good ideas or recommendations?
  3. No it is not. It is a victimisation of the poor and needy members of our society based on nothing more than were the council choose to house them initially. The deductions only apply to anyone claiming housing benefit. It does not apply to anyone capable of paying full normal rent on a property by themselves. As in a single person living in a 3 bed council house paying normal full rent isn't charged extra for bedrooms he/she doesn't need/use. However a single person in a 2 bed council house currently between jobs, getting £45 per week job seekers allowance has to pay £18 per week out of that JSA to the council for the unused bedroom because it isn't covered by housing benefit any more. People earning way below minimum wage are being forced further into poverty by what is nothing more than a very bad ill thought out Tory policy. This is tripe! The numbers of people this sentence truly applies to is infinitesimal at best. Seriously without any kind of disability or mental illness the amount paid out in benefits is so low nobody in their right mind would choose that as a way of life.
  4. Not something I've touched in a long time but I think a simple Visual Basic window can be made to take the user input and then pass the result as a variable to the command line for delprof to pick up in the same way...
  5. how about... SET /P computer="Please enter computer name> " delprof2 /c:%computer%
  6. My first thought, right or wrong, is an IP address conflict. Not sure where to point you to as a cause or solution though if all IP addresses are provided by DHCP other than to check for manually assigned IPs are not in the DHCP range ot otherwise already assigned to another device. DHCP should notice addresses already in use and mark them as bad address rather than allocate them. Still if it is that then it may point to a problem with stale records and scavenging. If DHCP is somehow scavenging records, thinking they are now re-allocatable, while the client thinks it still has time left on its lease?
  7. Ba Ba Ba, Ba Barbera-Ann...
  8. Stuart - or Stu for short...
  9. I was working for PC-World (sorry for swearing mods) at the time. I think they had a good racket going. As fast as they were paying us our wages, they were taking the money back again for brown box OEM component upgrades for our rigs. I think I changed GPU 3 times in a six month period at one point! (Then I bought an original XBox on launch and realised PC gaming was for losers (aka, consoles are cheaper)).
  10. Stalingrad! Ah, the memories. I used to use a sniper rifle (as I did on most maps) and try to find a hide-y hole somewhere to pick off all the wannabes who tried taking the machine gun at the far end of the court yard. Unfortunately I be concentrating too much on my sneaky sniping that someone would inevitable creep up on me and stab me in the back My favourite map was one we called "the clock tower". Ruined building on one side and church in the middle of a field. A good capture the flag game where the goal was always to capture and hold the clock tower. Once you got it you stood over the hatch in the floor and used bazookas or grenades to explode anyone foolish enough to come up the ladder Played many a LAN party with that game back 'in the day'. I got disengaged when everyone moved on to Battlefield 1942 and I found my physical nausea for FPS's was getting worse.
  11. Generally looks good to me. I'd ask a couple of questions on the backup server though. Does it really need 6 cores? Maybe some money saving to be had there, entry level Xeon should do the job. Also 4Tb? is that enough? I suppose it does depend on the size of schools, amount of data, back up regime and retention policy - but given 2.4Tb on the hosts, I'd have gone for nearer 10Tb to keep decent generational backups. Also, personally, I'd give those spec's over to VeryPC and Novatech. IMHO, there's almost certain some saving to be had and some great support/service from the bespoke solution providers. Our server farm is currently around 50/50 between those two suppliers. Also RAID 10 - I take it that's hardware RAID. What version of Windows are you running. Might be worth investing in some Intel S3700 SSD's and using software RAID (Windows Storage Spaces) if you are using 2012 or 2012R2.
  12. I thought you just kept your finger on the main fire button and waggled the joystick like a mad man. That's how I've always played the game.
  13. Currently playing Castlevania: Symphony of the Night. Took about 5 or 6 attempts at level 2, playing from the very beginning of the game each time, before I realised how game saves work. Game suddenly got a whole lot easier
  14. I find it interesting that Australia has interesting laws concerning prisoners...
  15. Fair enough, I'll accept the prisoners right to vote... ...they just need to visit the existing local polling station to exercise it...
  16. No, it's fine - American Republican/Democrat colours, it works
  17. Again back to @sonofsanta's two reasons for incarceration - punishment vs rehabilitation. It's a punishment, loss of liberty. If you think the answer to rape and murder is 6 weeks counselling (I'm being extreme for effect) then denying the right to vote probably doesn't make any sense.
  18. As I said, too much power invested in the sovereignty of parliament. We need better checks and balances.
  19. See, I'd argue - "isn't that what the courts are (should be) for?". Which only goes to highlight the sovereignty of parliament and the fact that too much power is invested there. Laws are infallible and should be challenged, but that's a different issue to the right to vote. You don't get sent prison for petty crime. If it's serious enough for society to think incarceration is the answer, that speaks volumes to me.
  20. It goes back to what @sonofsanta said about the two reasons behind the criminal justice system. My view is punishment first, rehabilitation second. Being sent to prison in my eyes is a loss of liberty, and that includes suffrage. But then I also believe in fixed term sentences without parole. Rehabilitation is what should happen towards the end of the sentence to prepare for reintegration with society, not the raison d'etre for prisons.
  21. If you want BASIC then grab a CPC emulator like WinAPE. Locomotive BASIC was easily the best of the 8-bit BASICs and Amstrad have given the ROMs away for free so it's all legal and above board. BBC BASIC is a little more powerful but not as easy to do some of the graphics stuff. Commodore BASIC is great if you want to learn 6502 machine code, lots of PEEKs and POKEs to do anything. Another option is an Amiga Emulator (Amiga Forever) and AMOS if you want to try some clever but reasonable easy games programming. Or better still Dark BASIC on Windows if you're gonna go down that route. Personally, I'd ignore BASIC and look at PHP.
  22. I've just scan-read the wiki article on human rights and didn't notice a - 'right of suffrage'. Did notice a 'Freedom of Movement' though, mmm, could cause problems if we have to apply human rights in their totality to convicted criminals. Maybe the Rutger Hauer film 'Wedlock' posses a solution to the problem?
  23. I like the American Revolution phrase - not taxation without representation. Start with that - if you pay taxes in this country, regardless of citizenship, you should have the right to vote or we shouldn't have the right to demand taxes from you. However taxation isn't the basis of voting - if you're a citizen you should have the right to vote, regardless of whether or not you are in employment Prisoners - I tend to the view that they have lost their liberty until released, therefore they forfeit right to vote. Voting age - I wonder if we are driving the age of majority a little to low. Let renew a focus on education until 21 (thinking apprenticeships in place of university were appropriate). Maybe the age of majority, and with it the voting age (and thus taxation) should be set at 21? Just a thought (that will be unpopular with young people - but then they can't vote so it don't matter ) Just my 2c on the subject
  24. At the beginning of the thread we were taking the political compass quiz and it seems most of us are Ghandi re-incarnated. Basically a more fascist version of the Greens, but still closer to them as we're generally a lot more socialist and more liberal than the, er, Liberal Democrats.
  25. From memory...I think Novatech offers NBD onsite but I've very, very rarely needed it. VeryPC's is sent back to Sheffield for repair but it's a no quibble servers with extremely quick turn around and excellent customer service all the way through. Again, rarely need to use it. When I buy suites of machines I tend to buy 1 spare to have on hand for an instant swap over anyway, so 2-3 days out for repair doesn't effect us so much.
