I think that you do need to declare everything. A bottle of wine would be difficult to prove as a payment for services as they could just be gifting you. Officially, I'm pretty sure that you need to pay tax... That said, I worked for Butlins and they used to give us booze and other nicities all the time...

I've had a teacher ask me if it is possible to setup the Activote voting system for the students to vote on their top three answers from a long list. You've touched on a good point. What happens to TV when it is produced just for profit? I'll tell you what happens. Pop Idol and Big Brother. BBC retains a certain, quality. If only they'd make something interesting happen with Dancing On Ice (Dancing On Fire springs to ming) I don't want the BBC to compete with commercial channels - I want it to continue doing what it has been allowed to do for years... The Young Ones Red Dwarf Men Behaving Badly... They've done it recently enough with The Office - I can't wait for the next...

Sold for free??? If you don't like it then don't buy it? You obviously enjoy watching these programmes - why do you resent paying towards funding future programmes and technology. Fifty years ago it wasn't possible for you to watch the programme you wanted to watch when you wanted to watch it.. now we have VoD just around the corner.. in part funded by your DVD purchases. Not only have you supported a worthy institution, you have DVDs of it's employees work to watch whenever you want. I'm thankful...

Seems crazy to pay for a service, even half price, that you CAN'T see!

It basically is a tax. The BBC was founded by the state. The BBC doesn't even control the cost of the licence - this is set by the government.

Unfortunately only watching a little BBC does not make your exempt for paying for all of the products all the time - this is where the car tax example holds up. Don't drive at all you don't pay. Seems like there are a few of you that just don't think you should pay... I don't think I should pay for unemployment benefits, since, if I lose my job I will need to find another. If I am injured then my work will pay - I'm paying into two systems and one doesn't benefit me at all. If I could opt out then the system collapses. Watch and pay, or, don't watch and don't pay. Seems like a lot of complaining for such a small amount of money.. I, for one, think the fee is good value considering the weatlth of wonderful television the BBC has produced and will produce in the future. I imagine a lot of us would be very different people without it. If you can't afford £10 a month then I would recommend cutting down on drinking/smoking/etc, cycle instead of driving and cooking your food from scratch just to start with.

I suppose it would be difficult if I didn't have £10 a month available. I resent paying £90 a month in council tax and over £300 income tax where I don't make choices about where my money goes...to which £10 to the BBC I choose to have pales an insignificance... Make £10 a month on eBay?

By installing new cables under our roads and launching satelittes into orbit! If you asked the BBC to raise your fee to pay for this I'm sure they'd be happy to! Are we at the stage where people that you would be happy to see the BBC shut down? I'm waiting to see what the next hit comedy is... AFAIC £135 a year is nothing to have no adverts - I hate adverts!

With analog technology it isn't possible to limit what services you are supplied with - everyone is provided with everything and the only way to make a charge for services that aren't paid for in any other way is to charge everyone. Why everyone has suddenly stopped watching BBC broadcasts is beyond me - maybe it's just to argue a point. Technology in this field is in the middle of massive change and we should be in the position shortly where you can be provided with only the channels you want. I think that the World Service and local stations should have no problem being funded from the majority of people that will continue to watch BBC products.
