The teacher needs to state the facts that support the theory of evolution in a non-confrontational way. My friend is a science teacher and he has been confronted by children he feels have been told to challenge him - when given the facts the child has always backed down. They begin to understand that it isn't just a matter of faith. Evolution is very important in science - children that don't accept that or the reasons why the evidence is so strong are highly unlikely to succeed in any area of science. Or archaeology.

It remains a scientific theory. "In scientific usage, a theory does not mean an unsubstantiated guess or hunch, as it can in everyday speech. A theory is a logically self-consistent model or framework for describing the behavior of a related set of natural or social phenomena." Wiki Generally speaking, theories are facts. They are the best model we have, backed up by large amounts of evidence. Since evolution was first proposed we have discovered genetics - if that isn't conclusive, being able to trace the movement if every piece of digital code within every living thing, then nothing is. What about micro-evolution? We will never be able to observe evolution but the overwhelming evidence it has left, in the fossil record for example, puts the theory beyond question. The idea that an old book somehow holds a more complete truth or an alternative theory that holds equal water and is based on an equal amount of faith is nothing other than an insult to Science. And it deserves a capital letter.

It isn't a science teacher's job to explain why his or her parents have a distorted understanding. Teaching creationism is not either. This is a really big problem. That's why scientists need to stand united with a single stance - evolution is a fact and biblical texts have no authority in the field.

Anyone else think Sam should read 'Scientology'? I'm surprised that not everyone agreed with the OP. Actually surprised. If you want to redefine science then that's a different issue. School children are not placed in a classroom with lots of cool chemicals and invited to mix them and try and discover something that no one has! Kids learn things like acid+base = salt+water - it was true when my mum and dad were at school, then when my older brother went, then when I did and my younger sister went. This is not a matter for debate, it's a fact we all learned (and should remember) Are people saying that if the biblical account of the world was not compatible with this we should discard this element of science too? Scientists don't go out of their way to annoy religious people!

Unfortunately this was my experience too. I'm not talking about getting along with people - I find it interesting. No one really needs to know about quadratic equations or oxbow lakes but generally humans like to learn more about people and environment. I find religion fascinating but prefer that it stays out of science - we can't afford for that to be corrupted with opinion. Science isn't about what we would prefer to be true - you can't have an opinion on a fact. Mine too. I think it's changed a little now ( I hope it has)

Because RS is not about converting people. It's simply learning about what other people think and do. That is important. The science classroom is not a place to ask if there is a god. Infact, it isn't about discovering anything new or questionning ANY science - the school classroom is about learning facts (called theories in science) that have been established. I think it's very important that school children understand that other people think different things and are given space to investigate this but any science teacher that wants to blur truth and fiction by supporting the idea that the world is less than 10,000 years old (undermining other subjects such as geography and history at the same time) needs to be moved into a different department (or institution)

If you do that then surely you need to entertain all views. Science doesn't say this is reality but some people don't believe in the idea of reality. Science is the study of things that are known and proven by the best in the field in the best way they can.
