  1. I've just installed FOG today, dual booted the server with ubuntu cos i have loads of ghost images i will have to convert to FOG. The above post sounds about right, I imagine your experiencing the same problems if you were to boot windows on one of them? I know with ghost PC-DOS and winPE sometimes (like today) new machines will come in and winPE won't load drives for the NICs so you spend an hour taking them out of there packaging, pluging them into the network then booting winPE from PXE only for it to not find session and ping commands give error cos of the wrong NIC drivers, or they dont fal back to the universal packet drivers. Could be a similar issue in the FOG / linux setup?? are they different NICs to the other things that pick up an IP from DHCP ?
  2. Thats the graphical menu, did you have the same problem with the text one? for a simple text menu the default file will look like this: Having a look into I've not seen any mention in the pxelinux documentation about using password menus with the graphical menus (obviously must be possible if FOG is using it). Also your password looks encrypted, it could be a character it dosnt like, in the examples ive seen there plain txt passwords. I'd save a copy of your original default file that you posted above and see what happens with a plain txt password in txt menu. Menu - Syslinux Wiki PXELINUX - Syslinux Wiki
  3. cant be any worse than hitachi deathstars, i mean deskstars. hope u can recover what u need!
  4. ive done it now, had a similar problem to this guy: FreeNAS forum • View topic - Mount point status of UFS: Error - Retry so reformatted my raid array, had to re mount it but remove the _ character from the share name this was causing the problem i think, after that the status was ok. then i could configure the rest so i can now browse the share from my windows client, i had to enable active directory in access, and set up users etc. just got to change the IP address to a static one and stick it in the server room. Thanks for your help guys, if it wasnt for your suggestions i would have missed the problem for even longer
  5. found the cause of my headache, the main share in Disks > mount point is in an error state
  6. just found the file manager, when i log in with admin there is nothing there and says i only have 11mb
  7. yeh i read about openfiler after just having set up free NAS i'd rather spend a little more time on this as if i go with open filer i will be waiting hours for the raid to rebuild itself.
  8. I have set up a share called share5 in mnt/share5 and then put folders in that share called applications data and documents then i mounted them so they are now in mnt/apllication mnt/documents etc im running the latest stable version, dont think i have the inbuilt file manager im still getting familiar with it tho. interestingly if i go services>CIFS and change it to anonymous then in windows navigate to \\freenas it says it cant find it (yes ive added the IP to my etc/hosts file) if i change that to local or domain i get a prompt for username and password, then when loggin in get errors when copyiong files.
  9. hey guys, I'm trying to setup a FreeNAS server out of an old desktop so we can put off buying a proper storage server. It's all up and running with RAID5 however when i try to browse to a share from a windows client I get asked for login even tho I have enabled anonymous login in FreeNAS, whats really irritating is core education blocking google search terms such as 'freeNAS anonymous login' you'd think they'd turn it off in the summer hols. anyway I am able to login to freeNAS but when i try to copy files to the share is says there not enough disk space which is wrong, I dont understant unix file permissions and am totally clueless on freeNAS only started this yesterday. any ideas?
  10. it does indeed, so probably not worth replacing the baterries if there bieng over charged they will just swell and split the cells again. Also dangerous as they can release hydrogen (very explosive) gas (if there lead acid). 18 months dosnt seem very long for a UPS, i would complain to the manufacturer, they might offer u a replacement as a courtesy
  11. has an update sorted it? if not can you post your default file in pxelinux.cfg directory
  12. hmm morals and microsoft, i'll won't go into that one, might turn into a rant If it breaks the EULA then best to build a new image with the VL version.
  13. forgive me if i sound stupid as networking TCP / IP isnt my strong point, but are these 2 troublesome IT suites on a different subnet? are the IP addresses within the scope of the DHCP / TFTP server if you set one? can u ping the TFTP server from a machine in there?
  14. I can't see anything morally wrong with this as the machines you've bought all had microsoft licences in the first place. We have bought machines in the past supplied with OEM licences only to re-image them with VL so we're paying for it twice!? many suppliers don't sell machines without OS's. I Think microsoft could atleast send us sum free mice and keyboards or t-shirts and mugs if were really paying twice for the same software
  15. the last couple of days ive used pxelinux to create a PXE boot menu so i can choose between WinPE and linux based PreOS to run ghost, (still having trouble getting PC-DOS to work which is the main one i wanted). Anyway I was wondering if i could add a fog option to this boot menu and run a fog server side by side for a while, i see that fog uses its own PXE menu but i'd like to keep mine, has anyone here done this??
  16. you should bill the couriers for your wasted time @£25 an hr!
  17. I'd love to go into who they think there going to replace the network manger with but I don't think its really appropriate to comment on an open forum before its been finialised etc, but its maddness. I'm doing a Foundation degree in enterprise computing, at south cheshire college (its an MMU course). it consists of Databases, programming (java), Info systems for Orgs, web and multimedia, computer platforms (maths theory and hardware), and networking this year. Its a good course and a great college. get on it if you can find the time its worth it, our college are flexible so you can do one day a week and complete the course over 4 yrs instead of 2. Theres an optional 3rd year at MMU for honours but that will be full time.
  18. I work 2.5 days a week (doing a foundation degree the other half) and am on £575 a month (13k if i was full time), theres only me and the network manager (not for long as, he's bieng redundant). We have about 800 students and 300 machines. I was brought in to cover someone off sick, now hes been back for bout 4 months and they've kept me, Its complicated but basically he's taking on a teaching assistant role so its just me that does all the hardware and software. I had no experience before i stated the job but have learned quickly and can keep everything running even on 2.5 days a week. I still think im underpaid tho! im not going to get a pay rise as the school is in deficit.
  19. We use that on the samsung laptops we have, for everything else i use K-lite codec pack and so we can play DVDs through windows media player without paying for anything.
  20. Ive had the same problem with 15 of our new Toshiba satelite pros, i added the right drivers to the WinPE boot CD with no luck and the same problem booting from PXE as this loads a WinPE image too, I found that adding the NDIS2 drivers for the network card to the PC-DOS fixed my problem but it means I have to boot all 15 from a CD instead of the network, not really a big problem. I wonder what FOG will be like with different NICs. Think when i get in to work monday i will change the network boot image to PC dos instead of WinPE as i have an issue with some client machines not contacting the ghost session as the techie before me has installed alot of different add in NICs, which is a pain in the arse as from a room of 30 pcs only about 24 will ghost, the others have different NICs.
  21. I use Task scheduler in XP to run Shutdowns on the student machines at night, I have 2 ways to give the task files to the student machines LanSchool or Ghost Console Client, think RM provide something similar to LanSchool but don't know if it has a file transfer option, its really handy. How To Schedule Tasks in Windows XP the task sheduler in vista is even better allowing conditions.
  22. Have you resolved this problem? do all your clients have the same BIOS settings, ive had this problem when ghosting sometimes the odd machine will have AHCI enabled /disabled which can cause this. FOG sounds awesome, wish id found this forum earlier Ive just written a batch file that runs VB scripts to rename machines by mobo serials reboot and join the domain. the network manager has set me up my own ghost server but its jurassic only running 512mb ram, so i might try FOG on it.
