Having run Aim High before and worked with 4c software on it, that may be easier said than done We have now abandoned this software as the restrictions on comment banks were troublesome, and it's a pain to get data back into assessment manager. We used the 'briefcase' in a way it was not apparently designed to be used....well, if it doesn't allow teachers to take the reports home and work on them, I wasn't sure what it was designed for! I guess it's OK if you're a smaller school. Out of interest, how do you allow SIMS upgrades? Can you not allow Aim High upgrades in the same way?

But don't do what I did & ban cmd.exe and *.bat in a computer policy..... unless you don't want your login scripts to run....stupid girl me!!!! LOL

Are these PC's networked? If so, then stop students running exe, bat or msi files through AD. An alternative is Access Patrol by codeworks - pretty cheap - if you need a graphical front end to control student access.

I use OP softwares 'Admin's Nasty File Finder'. You still have to exercise caution as some of the images will be coursework related, but great for finding mp3's!!

Are there multiple buildings on your site? If so, place a NAS at the far side of the school, and back up to that. The chances of a fire spreading that far is minimal. For paranoia purposes, get a few USB drives and attach them weekly to the NAS, back up the back up over a weekend, and put the USB drive in the safe.

I somewhat agree with SRochford - poor grammar/spelling on an application form is a big no-no, especially if the person has a university education. Don't write the way that you speak - i.e. don't use colloquialisms. We all have unique talents and skills which we give to our employer - you have to ask what yours are? Strengths and weaknesses - we all have them - what are you good at, and what are you weak at. In respect to the things you are weak at, what are you going to do about them? In this current climate, employers don't just want someone who can do the job; they also want 'added value' - i.e. what skills/talents do they get for free!

I've got to deliver this as well - esafety training I mean - next Monday I've been finding it difficult to get a mix of shocking (to make the teachers think what they are doing) and practical (i.e. give them ways to protect themselves from e.g. identity theft). One way I thought of is to mock up a facebook page and let them in groups put on what information they think would be OK to put on, then show them a video of a girl who was stalked through facebook and then let them reconsider what they deemed suitable....what do you think? I've got 30 minutes training to do on esafety/data protection/safeguarding.

As long as there is a statement in your AUP which states that users should not consider email wholely private you are covered to do random checks. Obviously, none of us do unless there is an area of concern, but it does sometimes happen. Sounds like the deputy head may have concerns you are not aware of at the moment, as email filters,etc do not deal with potential inappropriate contact with kids or over the top coursework assistance.

I can't believe no-one is running Outpost through an ISA server!

Terminal services is performing a different function, namely delivering SIMS to the classroom for e-registration and profiles within the boundries set by our LEA. I don't fancy licencing 1300 kids to use terminal services, so outpost is a much cheaper and more effective option in our scenario.

Hi guys, I'm getting frustrated with ISA server - only installed this the other week, and have terminal services successfully being published through it, but I'm struggling with Ranger Outpost! I can tracert the address through to the interface of the ISA server, but traffic seems to get lost from there, and can't hit my outpost server. Have registered domain on both internal and external DNS, and ensured that the default gateway on the Outpost server is set to the ISA server. I'm guessing it's my settings on the ISA server, but being new to this beast (no training of course - I'll 'pick it up' - dear god!) I'm floundering a little. Anyone got this scenario working who could give me a helping hand?

I allow 750-800mm per student, and have a benching company CAD up designs for me - saves me working it out with bits of paper! I tend to go with a 'backwards rows' arrangement - i.e. the reverse of the 'old style' rows, where you end up teaching from the back of the classroom. The kids backs actually face the front of the classroom. Decided on this in conjunction with teaching staff, as kids actually have to turn around to see the board it stops them messing with keyboards, etc.; teacher can also see all screens from front of room. I try to leave a bit of space at the front of the classroom for groupwork or interactive activities where the room is big enough. Works well for most scenarios, but can be difficult when teaching community adult classes, especially pensioners! For this reason, looking at introducing swivel office chairs (was loath to before due to kids permanently spinning on them!)

It seems like a daft question - but have the users passwords expired? I had a similar issue on TS running on Server 2008 and found that it was because the users passwords had expired, and TS was unable to handle a password change request - it just wouldn't let them connect.

If it's any help, my .sch.uk is hosted on 1and1 as an external domain. I can't recall now exactly what hoops I had to jump through, but I recall 1and1 exerting pressure to just insert a DNS record to redirect to 1and1. I then manage all subdomains and DNS with 1and1. Amusingly, I still have my MX records set to RM's mail servers It costs us £14.99 a month to host there, on a business pro account with loads of webspace (we need it!), but if you only need a little webspace and DNS, then you can get an account for £1.99 a month, with 5 subdomains included. I've found their service pretty good, and haven't suffered any loss of service at all which has got to be a plus point!

Hi there, I host our sch.uk domain on 1and1, no problem (1&1 Internet Ltd.- Home Page). I've also registered a .eu domain name with them to reflect the school's International language college status. They're pretty good value for what you get - SQL, subdomains, etc. And it beats the £400 per year that the LA wanted to host it for us

I buy from Millenium Computers who build to order (was IT Support Centre). I tend to ask them to put a steel plate behind the blank drive covers as I had same problem as you. They're cheap & have a 5 year onsite warranty in with the price. Have about 450 of them & no big issues. BTW, the PC's are sideways in hangers under most desking and the ports are redirected to a fused port plate on top. Get lots of vandalism on the port plates (USB & sound), but at least that doesn't kill the PC. About £35 for a new port plate from Datacable & charge the department or parent (if the teacher was observant enough to notice who damaged it & when).

We use Truancy Call/Call Parents to text/phone everybody. Obviously, it only works if everyone tells us about information changes to landline/mobile numbers!
