One of the budget pressures we constantly face is teacher devices - do we issue them laptops, do we put PCs in classrooms, do we issue iPads? etc... So, I thought I'd do a straw poll and see what you all do these days.

Same @IrritableTech, Sidmouth Folk Festival worked hard this year to be plastic free as much as possible. No throwaway drinks cups - it was £1 for a merch cup, so they were re-used. All the food outlets used card/paper instead of polystyrene things etc... Paper straws, wooden cutlery. Was a nice thing to see! A lot of folk festival people have pewter tankards anyway. The bands weren't allowed water bottles either - so they came on stage with mugs. There were water taps at camp sites and performance tents, so you could refill your bottles as well. Plus the bins were set up for as much recycling as possible.

Email all users asking them to fill in a google form with the MAC address from the bottom of the phone and their room/office number? I've yet to come across a VOIP phone that doesn't have it printed on the bottom. That said, you could script it - if you can ssh into a switch, you can write a script to do it. You can get your list from the PBX and get your script to match with what's on the switches.

We have Unifi switches in all but 1 of our schools here now. They work well. Though, we still have a HP L3 in the core, as I've not found a reason to replace just yet!

Why does the project cost £300m+? That's my big question. That's £6000 per device (obviously, that's not how it is spent, but a rough guess of £300 per device and £5700 for "other" stuff seems rather a lot anyway).

I'd suggest that you should take this opportunity to take ownership of the network and rather than simply repeat what they had before look at implementing your own design. I cannot see why a school would have an L3 switch in each wing doing routing - there's not really any value to it. I'd strip it back and have an L3 at the core, and then L2 switches at the edge.

Just point out that this is wrong. McDonald's plastic straws were recyclable, but they were most certainly not recycled. They all ended up in landfill or incinerators. Or random hedges. Paper decomposition is quick and relatively less damaging anyway.

If you're wanting something toughened, you're best looking at interactive displays - they're lower cost simply due to bulk being bought.

We use Ruckus to do it - you just specify the VLANs you want to communicate across via the relay and it handles it.

If you don't want to spend on the Hue ones, look for Zigbee compatible bulbs (most say if they're compatible with Hue).

I'm sure you realise that many schools use their email solution as that "relevant system" also? I don't think I've ever been in a school where admin/management staff don't have a million folders in their email client, with stuff carefully sorted into it.

You're somewhat defeating the point of the device if you go Chromebook and don't use G Suite. Things like the Surface Go and Acer Spin etc... seem like they'd be more your sort of device if you are wedded to Office 365.

We have 40 phones, 20 APs and a few other POE bits plugged in to 13 Unifi switches on this site. Total wattage used is 109W at the moment. Most I've seen is around 200W. So, in my experience, you probably won't need much more than the 250W editions.

What controller are you running, how many APs, and how many clients connecting? I found issues like this when running a cloud key with too many switches (so the controller just got overloaded).

We go by "how bad is their current kit?" and go from there. We choose kit by what we can afford, and what will suit the task. If a room is huge, a 65" touchscreen isn't gonna cut it, so we look at something bigger. If the room is gonna be used by tiny children as well as adults, we'll use movable mounts. Speakers, we generally have a "one size fits all" approach - vision amp and speakers, tech connect cabling etc... Standards are all well and good, if you can afford to comply with them.
