Much obliged, kind Sir!!! I'd tried this before, but I must have messed up one of the registry settings. I'd ideally like to have it working without the registry entries, but we'll wait on Promethean sorting that out. To my mind, having an option within Inspire where you tell it which Java install dll to point to. Maybe some kind of pecking order.. If exist C:\Program Files (x86)\Activ Software\Inspire\Java\bin\server\jvm.dll, it'll use that. Otherwise, get it to look in the registry for something like HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\WOW6432Node\Activ Software\Inspire\App\1.0\JVM.DLL = REG_SZ = [path to jvm.dll] Or a config file in the Inspire install folder. Finally, if it doesn't find any of those conditions, then revert to the standard Java registry. That way, it's running completely portable. We ran it without any real issues. Apart from Windows not letting them eject the USB disk at the end because it was in use - most likely our AV scanning the 10 gajillion files that are on the thing. I didn't know there was a network or online version - they never offered that to us - pfff!

Hi. Our authority is looking at removing Java Runtime from our PCs because of the cost implications with the forthcoming licence changes. Our Maths teachers make heavy use of the Equation Editor in Inspire. Is there a way to get Inspire to use OpenJDK or Coretto (when it's officially launched)? Cheers, Gerard

Sussed it. Turns out that our Chrome GPO didn't have a setting telling it to use the system proxy settings. It appears that if you don't have that enabled, normal "non-signed-in" users are absolutely fine - it uses system proxy. If you sign in, though, it tries to go out direct. So I just updated the GPO to force it to use system proxy - and all seems well.

On the off-chance that fellow C&G users are reading this I've found that Open8 only works if I use the syntax "C:\blah\jdk8u192-b12-jre\bin\javaw.exe" -jar -Xms512m -Xmx1024m "C:\whatever\SeemisCNG\launcher.jar" otherwise, it doesn't work - log files complain about heap size. I tried the same with Open11, but it stubbornly refuses to work (heap size recorded in the log), apparently no matter what size I set xms/xmx to.

Hello, all.. This is probably something REALLY simple, and my coffee deficiency is showing. Up until now, we've used GPO to remove the option to allow folk to sign into Chrome. Now, however - as is the way with things - we need to look at enabling it to allow Staff to use an extension which is registered to our central email domain account. It only works if you're logged into Chrome with a valid email domain. Anyhoo.. Onto the actual problem As a test, I've removed the GPO that prohibits the sign in. I login into Chrome with my relevant credentials (it takes me to the main login page). I select "Link". And then I can't browse the WWW. If I look at Chrome settings, proxy, it's still all good - using the System proxy settings. As soon as I go into Settings and logout, WWW works again. We're behind authenticated proxy (WebSense/ForcePoint). Our proxy Infrastructure person isn't in this week (yay), so I'm kind of guessing here that the proxy is either being fed bobbins details, or that it isn't actually using the System proxy settings... Does Chrome not send the user credentials of the logged on user when using a linked/sync'd account? Cheers, Gerard

I was about to reply that their schedule says JRE11 is meant to be supported from September, but Open11 wasn't working when I tried it today. I'll give Open8 a try. Thanks for the suggestion!

My head hurts Our pupil attendance system (Click & Go by SEEMIS) requires Java Runtime Environment 8. We have it running in a self-contained "portable" environment to allow us to keep this running with JRE8 while we look at removing JRE from the PCs. Does this mean we'll need to pay to continue to do this?

Hello, all.. As is the way with things, our Schools now NEED (on pain of not being able to teach the kiddiwinks) certain Chrome Extensions to be installed. I've previously setup the GPOs so that * is in the blacklist - meaning they can't install any extensions. I've added the ID of permitted extensions (eg FunkyTeaching App1 = abcdefghijkl). So users with access to Chrome Store can manually install Funky Teaching App1 if needed. I was then hoping to extend that with the "forced install" option... However - the current IT policy has dictated that users aren't allowed onto Chrome Store. GAH! So I was looking at hosting a copy of the extensions on an internal server. Has anyone actually done this? I'd looked online, and it initially appears like you just edit the json file with the URL and update details and then repack it using Developer options.... But then I saw another document saying that as of a certain version, you're no longer able to do this. Any/all advice gratefully received. Cheers, Gerard

Looking for a little assistance in terms of getting access to this site. https://scholar.hw.ac.uk Behind our Websense (or ForcePoint, as I think it's called now) proxy, users on IE or Chrome get: This site is not secure Error code DLG_FLAGS_INVALID_CA Users can click "Go onto the webpage", and they get access but with a Certificate error warning at the top. As a test, I took one of our DirectAccess laptops home and tried accessing the site. Using proxy, I got the same error. If I switched IE to direct (because I'm at home), then I got on. Once I was on, then I could access the site behind proxy. I'm guessing that our https filtering proxy is mangling or blocking some kind of https certificate for the user. Once it's in place, all is well. All feedback welcomed. Cheers, Gerard

The SecurePrint strategy was well above my paygrade, I'm afraid (I'm just the desktop monkey that has to try to get PCs to talk to the shiny toys) I'd dabbled with the free version of PaperCut many moons ago when we had our own printers. It looked more than decent. Who knows - maybe it'll be implemented for the next phase of the printer migration?

We implemented Canon SecurePrint on about half of our High Schools and about a third of our Primary schools (quite the pilot project!) All existing printers previously owned by the schools were taken away (and quickly nabbed by other schools). Staff map to a secureprint queue where they need to use a token to retrieve their print job from any device in the school. Pupils still use a non secure (direct) print to a device based on the room they're in. It seems to work pretty well. Same/next day callout for any technical issues. Some qualms - I'd originally requested the MFDs be setup with proper host names. That wasn't done because it apparently wasn't in the spec - sigh. Troubleshooting them is a pain, in that quite literally all we can do is PING them. We've not been given any admin credentials for the devices because they're not ours.

Hello, all.. Our school has an old Exterity digital display which plays MPG format videos. It's used in our corridor areas for "welcome to the school" type things on LCD screens. (Yes, I know OneLAN is much better suited for this - we're stuck with what was bought) Previously, we've converted PowerPoint slides to videos using PowerVideoMaker. Allegedly, it's a 720x576 PAL DVD format. VLC says they're actually 720x480 - but at least the damn things play on the display unit. Now that we've moved onto Office 2016, we can export PPTX slides to MP4. I was hoping to use something FREE like Handbrake or AnyVideoConverter to change this MP4 to the same format as these generated slides. Reason being the PowerVideoMaker is sometimes a tad "fussy", requiring reboots and swearing. Can I get videos converted in Handbrake or AnyVideoConverter to play on these display units? No. No I cannot. I've looked at them in G-Spot and VideoInspector, and I can't for the life of me get a video converted with the same settings. Is there any chance some kind soul could look at the video, and give me some pointers on some FREEWARE I can use to convert an MP4 to a matching format? This is an example video that does work on the display. At the very least - something with a genuine licence is significantly more palatable than what appears to be a slightly suspect installer script with fonts apparently nicked from different sources Much obliged! Hello, all.. Has anyone been asked to install Urdu fonts? We've been asked to install this "interesting" looking application. Pak Urdu Installer - Urdu Fonts, Urdu Keyboard and Urdu Language Support Installer - Free Urdu Software Interesting, in that the download link on CNet threw up a popup for a known malicious software site. It's called Pak Urdu. According to the webpage: "Three common Urdu fonts that are used in Urdu websites or other places have been included in Pak Urdu Installer in which artistic font "Jameel Noori Nastaleeq", CRULP font "Nafees Web Naskh" and BBC Urdu font "Urdu Naskh Asia Type". These all three fonts are Urdu Unicode True Type font (ttf). " I have my doubts that this website has the copyright on any/all of these fonts. We only install fonts if we have the written consent of the copyright holder. We've had too many requests for "free" fonts which turn out to be "free for PERSONAL use". Is anyone familiar with any of these fonts? Thanks, Gerard

I finally got it working when our Infrastructure team changed the https tunneling for a couple of sites suggested by Unity. So that's good. It then proceeded to download over 1.5Gb of stuff into the test user's My Documents when I clicked "New Project". That's much less good. I won't tell you the size of a pupil's My Documents folder - suffice to say it's less than 1Gb. I queried Unity if there's some way of making (some of) this 1.5Gb installed locally, but they came back with something about seeing I was getting https errors. Hmm.. Anyone else been faced with this?
