3 Simultaneous Remote Connections To a Server
farquea replied to farquea's topic in Windows Server 2000/2003
its nothing specific, but rather than having AD, and exchange tools installed on our desktop PCs we just decided that if we bundled everything onto one server that it would make things a lot easier espeically for the new member of staff who is starting as previously we would jump from server to server to access certain things, now most things, and eveyrthing the new technician will need can all be accessed from this 1 server. -
An unamed shambles of a support company, lets call Shamesys, decided that when they setup our school that it would be a good idea to install our 2nd domain controller onto a server with a single P4 cpu, 1 hard drive and no RAID controller in it even if you didnt want to be crazy and consider backing it up. This was while at the same time a dual Xeon server with a RAID controller was available and instead they decided to install Policy Central Enterprise solely on this server. We now want to swap the 2 about, the P4 server uses SCSI hard drives while the Xeon Server is using SATA. Can anyone suggest what we be the best and easiest way to go about swapping each? Its worth noting the PCE software isnt too important we can deal with having to rebuild that from a fresh windows install but the DC we really don't want to be rebuilding from a fresh Windows install if we can help it. Oh and both are on server 2003.

We have recently installed an app management server where all IT staff can log on and have 1 centralised place where all software and tools are available. However there are 3 members of staff here who will need to be logged on all day. As i understand windows only allows by default 2 simultaneous connections. To have 3 or more does it mean i have to install the Terminal Server role and then purchase a CAL or CALs for these connections, would it be 3 (one for each of us) or just 1 extra?

Recovering Local Server Passwords, HELP!
farquea replied to farquea's topic in Windows Server 2000/2003
ah right that helps then in a way, we are migrating 1 of our dc's to a new server and was hoping to be able to log on locally and check a few things over before plugging into the network. -
I have 5 servers that i was not given the correct local admin password for. I logged on with a domain admin account hoping to just right click on "My Computer" then "Manage" and go to the "Local Users and Groups" tab and reset the local admin password that way. However when i do the Local Users tab is missing, It's there when i log on locally onto other servers which the password does work on so it must be some sort of network policy removing it. Can anyone help and tell me where i can find the policy setting to disable this? Or any other suggested ideas to fix this??

I've been given some money to spend and new printers are on the agenda. We currently use HP2605n, HP3800 and HP3505's in classrooms around the school and have 1 CP1515 in an office. I want to stay with HP and dont want to end up with yet another model of toners to have to buy. It seems the replacement for models such as the 2605 and 3505's are a lot smaller in size and toner capacity which means im reluctant to put them into a classroom and have to change the toners every few days. Can anyone reccomend something affordable or know of where i could get hold of some 2605/3800/3505's as they all seem to be end of life?

Software to display students' text messages on whiteboard?
farquea replied to farquea's topic in Educational Software
to be honest i'm not too sure, but the teacher just said he had an idea he wanted to investigate whereby having kids text in and have their texts displayed on the board. Whether he has considered the costs im not sure, he just wanted to know if it could be done and if so how much would it cost to get setup. -
i set up RDP connections for staff on their laptops to connect to our terminal Server to use sims. Normally i set the shortcut up to connect to the server and enter the username, tick the "allow to save credentials" box, connect enter the password save so that next time all they have to do is double click the icon and enter no username and password. Ive used a new XP cd which has the latest version of Remote Desktop on (6.1) and it will not let me save credentials. If you enter the server name, it auto populates the username field below with the local computer name and user account and is greyed out so you cannot edit it. This is really doing my head it, ive googled it all day and see no one else complaining and it appears everyone else on RDP 6.1 has an "allow me to save credentials box" and no greying out of the username field. Anyone come accross this before??

ive got a similar problem where students have deliberatly created new folder inside new folder inside new folder and so on so that i now cant delete it because the path is too long and when you drill down the folder structure windows gets so far then even though it shows there is another folder, wont let you click in it. Any ideas how i can delete these folders?

Been asked to setup a School Radio Station
farquea replied to farquea's topic in How do you do....it?
That would be a big help if you could thanks. I've just spent 2 hours looking at licensing, and im only a little clearer on just exactly what we need and how much it will cost. -
How many CALS do we need for our Terminal Server?
farquea replied to farquea's topic in Licensing Questions
Reading that i just spotted "up to two users or devices may access the server software only for server administration purposes, without requiring either a RDS CAL or Windows Server CAL." We have 4 members of ICT staff who rdp onto servers here, so therefore we are breaking the rules if we dont have 2 additional RDS CALs?? **bangs head against desk** -
How many CALS do we need for our Terminal Server?
farquea replied to farquea's topic in Licensing Questions
Im really getting confused now. i have 1 server that 50 people can connect to. each device they use has a windows license, office license etc. The server has a server 2k3 license. I thought i just need 50 user cals but your saying i also need device cals? I dont actually know if we use Microsoft Schools Agreement here, any easy way of finding out? -
How many CALS do we need for our Terminal Server?
farquea replied to farquea's topic in Licensing Questions
When you say a windows CAL for each device connecting, you mean just a windows license? and the same for a server license too? So really, in conclusion i need "a remote desktop CAL for each user who could potentially connect" for every member of staff it looks like. So now the next question, how much are we usually talking for user CALS as i'd need about 50 i reckon. Is it a one off cost? If i buy a CAL for Mr Teacher1 who then leaves in a few weeks, and Mr New Teacher starts at the school, can they use the Teacher1's CAL or do i then need a new one for the new teacher? Sheesh mavhc isnt wrong, this could potentially be stupidly confusing! -
How many CALS do we need for our Terminal Server?

all staff will be connecting from their school staff laptops which have Office installed. So therefore we should be covered and dont need to do anything on the Office saide of things when it comes to licensing? -
How many CALS do we need for our Terminal Server?
farquea replied to farquea's topic in Licensing Questions
I've only allowed 10 concurrent logons at any one time. but there might be about 50 members of staff who will be given access to it. So i have to buy 50 user cals? or go with what mavhc says and buy 10 device CALS? -
Been asked to setup a School Radio Station
farquea replied to farquea's topic in How do you do....it?
We have a load of old Dell GX60's which are 2ghz Celerons with 512mb RAM in them. So was hoping to use those rather than the better pc's we have in school which we are running low on. I do have a couple of spare dual Xeon CPU servers though which could be used for hosting i guess if it really needed something that powerful? The teacher whose idea this is wants it as a "Radio Station" so just uploading pod casts to the VLE wont float his boat. He wants people to tune in and out through the day with a continous stream of music or learning material being broadcast during the day. -
How many CALS do we need for our Terminal Server?
farquea replied to farquea's topic in Licensing Questions
Just had a check and yes i did install Office onto it. Thought i hadnt. So what does that mean, i need to buy yet more licenses? If so i imagine i could just put openoffice onto it instead? -
Been asked to setup a School Radio Station
farquea replied to farquea's topic in How do you do....it?
thanks Mark. We did look at having an external company come in but the money they quoted was a little too much so we decided that between me (I.T) the music tech and a member of staffs contact who has his own internet radio, that we could get it setup oursevles for a fraction of the cost. So i was just hoping to get some advice really. I was hoping someone who has done this already would be able to advise what spec computers we'd need in order to host it in school and whether it would be realistic or not when considering bandwith consumption etc. -
How many CALS do we need for our Terminal Server?
farquea replied to farquea's topic in Licensing Questions
Excuse my ignorance in all of this as i really am unsure about all of this. It is only SIMS on this TS, no Office or anything else is installed. So i need to buy a user CAL for each member of staff who is going to RDP into the TS and use it? When i have purchased these CALS how do i "use" them as such so that everything works how i want? If i buy say 100 user CALS and mr teacher 101 comes along, what exactly will stop him from rdp'ing onto the TS and using SIMS? -
Been asked to setup a School Radio Station
farquea replied to farquea's topic in How do you do....it?
ok but with us just starting out, can we not achieve anything at all similar through a combination of winamp/shoutcast etc which are free? -
I have setup a Terminal Server to allow staff to connect in and use SIMS from home. I have limited the number of connections to 10 and when they log in, they automatically do so as a general user account called sims.ts. Therefore how many CALS do we need to purchase? 1 for each member of staff or 10 as there wouldnt be much way of proving that the 10 people connected at one time are not the same 10 who were connected the previous day or am i being too hopeful with that?
