i can get on the embedded web interface no problem, but its password protected so if i need to be able to change the hostname and if i ever want to change the ip i cant until i reset the password, so need to reset it.

just tried it in Firfox and yep thats works, thanks! what a piece of crap though that it doesnt work in IE!

We have a HPK850 printer in the school with a admin password set on it. We dont know what the password is so need to reset the printer. I cant find any documentation on how to do this, would anyone know how?

we have a HP2600dn printer and whenever we connect to it, the web interface doesnt work, we've tried doing a reset of the printer 2 times by going through the control panel on the front of the printer but even after that, still doesnt appear to enable the web interface. Does anyone know how i can enable it?

I'm afraid i might not be able to answer very well as like i said ive little or no previous experience of dealing with VPN's. We were literally just given a folder with a cisco setup installer and some instructions of how to connect using the client. Once you are connected it just informs you and thats it, nothing else. If it were possible to map the drives once connected by using their logon so that all the school drives and their work space is mapped so that they just need to open My Computer like they would in school, that would be ideal. How easy/difficult would that be to do?

Just an update, the support comapny installed 8gig of ram, taking it up to 12gig (in true style they messed up the order and only had 8 delivered instead of 16) and much to my non-suprise the backup has failed again today. The errors are; 4 instances of - "Unable to complete the operation for the selected resource using the specified options. The following error was returned when opening the Exchange Database file: '-1011 The system is out of memory." and 2 of - "V-79-57344-33928 - Access Denied. Cannot backup directory and its subdirectories." So i think its fair to say their solution of charge 400 quid and add more ram has not resolved it so ill be asking them to take it out and refund if it doesnt work tomorrow. But has anyone any ideas what would be causing those errors at a guess, wouldnt mind showing them up and providing them with the fix.

Our off site support company have setup a VPN. It is a cisco client but all that happens is that you make the connection then have to open up a window and browse to the location of the file you want by typing in the exact folder location of where it is hosted. This is unrealistic to ask staff to start typing in addresses such as \\networkdrivex\user.name\work etc So for the moment its not being used. When they said they would be setting it up i imagine some sort of simple user interface maybe that the user logins into and then it takes them to their workspace and from there they can easily access other areas such as shared drives. Having not really worked with VPN's much before i dont really know what the front end's of should or could be made to look like, is what i imagined to be done possible or if you can let me know how other schools have setup in place to allow users to work access work from home that would be great.

yeah they are fully aware we will be having a pay rise, its just the question of how much and how much we ask for, so thats why i wanted to get a few ideas of what similar schools technicians were on.

At the moment i work in a school as part of a 2 man technician team with an offsite support company partly managing the I.T in school. It is a nightmare so me and my colleague look to be taking over full control in the near future and we will obviously be expecting more money. Even now i feel our jobs exceed "technician" as we are developing new office and school procedures and are solely responsible for investigating and trialing new hardware/sofware for the future much in the way a I.T Manager would be doing, we are not just reparing and maintaining, we are making all the decisions that affect the school. At the moment we are both roughly on £15k but my question is how much do you think we should be demanding when everything comes in-house and we will both have taken our MCTS qualifications. Just looking for some ballpark figures from schools which may be setup in a similar way with 2 technicians sharing all duties.

It is Exchange 2007 and we are using Symantec Backup Exec, not sure version number. Because of the way the school is setup with this company we are limited in what we can do and see on the server, we can log onto it and thats about it really.

I'd like to gauge some general response to a billing request from our (consistently awful and incompetant) support company. The problem comes from our Exchange Server failing to backup since last week. This has not been a problem since it was installed in 2007 and we currently have approx 1000 mailboxes in use. This is from the email; I have been informed that the School has been having some issues with the backup of data from the Microsoft Exchange server. The operational requirements of the server has now reached capacity for the memory and it needs to be upgraded from 4Gb to 16Gb. The cost of the hardware is £400. Please will you let me know if you wish to proceed with this? I have agreed that our support team will install the memory free of charge. Please will you let me know as soon as possible so I can get the memory ordered today. Regards I'm no Exchange expert so is what they are saying legitimate or am i right to question this or maybe ask for some more evidence to warrant the need for such an increase in memory?

how exactly would i do that if its not already been done without me knowing?

We've just installed HP Web JetAdmin and the other day i spent a good portion of time going through a good portion of the printers in the school changing their Host/Systemname from the default to a meaningful printer name, which tied into the room they were in. When changing them, i went through the process and really only 1 or 2 actually changed to what i set them as in the devices list. I figured it might take a bit of time to resolve and update because when you clicked on them it said they were set to what i wanted but just still showing the old name in the device list. I've come to check today and only 1 is set to what i changed them to and all have now changed back to the defaults in the device list and as well in the network config screen. Has anyone come across a problem like this as i dont want to waste more time naming them to find it doesnt work again?

I would like to have a custom email waiting in all new mailbox accounts for new users in the school so that the first time they open Outlook they have a welcome email with a few things regarding their accounts and IT in the school explained clearly for them to read. Ideally i just want to create their user logon in AD, open up Exchange Management, create their mailbox and that it, have the pre-typed welcome email automatically sent to their mailbox as soon as its created. Can anyone help?

This is a bit of a weird one but one that has me stumped. Maths use a site, mymaths.co.uk. Everything looks fine until students login. When they log in the buttons at the top of the webpage do not display properly, you can drag your mouse over where they should be and know they are there but you cant actually see them. This is in contrast to a teacher login where the page displays properly with no problem. Both use the same site login and Ive tried this on the same machine so its definitely not a java or machine software issue as it will as it will work fine when i log on as a teacher but not as a student logon. Can anyone suggest anything i should be trying in order to get to the bottom of this as its driving me crazy and the maths teacher is demanding it works for the start of term on thursday and i dont really want to have to mess about making a MyMaths windows logon which is basically just a cut down teacher logon just so students can use this website.

Yeah when we move to FOG i had plans of WOG and they'll pull the image down all on their own but was just hoping until then someone could suggest something obvious i may of overlooked to make it easier. guess not, oh well!

I was just wondering if anyone could suggest a better way to ghost our school laptops as currently we have to wheel the laptop trolley into the server room and plug in 30 network cables into the switch and then into each laptop and kick them off to norton ghost individually. We intend to switch to fog in the future and from playing around with that understand it could make it a little easier but until then i was just hoping someone could suggest a better way they currently go about this as its a pain in the arse and have to do a trolley before school starts next week.

Everytime we ghost our laptops we have to enter the laptop keys. In the image they are in then we use sysprep and it looks like they get deleted when doing this. Is there anyway of them being saved in the image while still using sysprep so we get the name screen etc after we ghost? Its just a bit of a pain to log onto 30 laptops at a time and enter the wireless key.

We've just found out kids in the school are avoiding logon settings and getting unrestricted internet acess by logging onto the computer so a local profile is created, logging off then unplugging the network cable, logging on to be told their roaming profile is not available but instead a local profile will be used. Then once logged on the cable goes back in and suddenly they can load up IE and have access to the connections tab where they can see the proxy settings, can create and delete files on the C: drive but fortunately not delete existing files. So has anyone come across this before and can suggest the best way to combat it? We are thinknig have delprof to delete all local profiles at log off, setting policy refresh to something like every 1 or 2 minutes, or some kind of thing to stop logon if no active network connection is detected? Any suggestiong would be welcomed!

Stupid question but how can you pull up logs of recent user activity in Smoothwall, we just cant seem to find it apart from the real time log but we want to see what a user has been on earlier in the day. Anyone help?

Me and my colleague are looking to get qualified as an MCTS. We are looking to take 3 courses; 70-236 - Microsoft Exchange Server 2007, Configuring 70-642 - Windows Server 2008 Network Infrastructure, Configuring 70-640 - Windows Server 2008 Active Directory, Configuring We intend to just use the DVD resources from CBT Nuggets (unless anyone has any better ideas?) My question is we started this say September 1st, how long do you think is realistic to go through all 3 courses and sit their exams?

Ok got them working, was a power setting in windows on the nic that needed enabling. So with that working is there any specific program we could use to turn on all computers in the school that grabs mac addresses and saves them so that WOL can be scheduled to run automatically each day at a given time? As for working out why it doesnt work over the proper school network that might be a little more tricky as we are run by a off site support company (hopefully not for too much longer tho) and getting them to do anything simple usually takes them about 2 months so asking them to look into this, well maybe by xmas we could expect it to be done.

right i just tried wol.exe again. i tried it on a little test network we have which is just some old servers hooked up through a hub. it doesnt work with Dell GX60's but it does work when i plugged in a Dell optiplex320. it doesnt work however over the school network which i assume is because you're throwing in switches and it isnt as straight forward. So any ideas of what i need to check in order to get it working over the entire school network and as a longshot any ideas of how i can get it to work on these older GX60's (ill try updating the firmware now) as thats really the reason i wanted to do it as they take so long to boot up everytime someone switches them on?

I'm trying to get WOL working in school and tried various WOL utilities without any luck. We use Dell computers in school and been told you need to use the Dell Utility and wondered if anyone had a link to this tool as the only thing i could find didnt have anything WOL related in it as far as i could see.

Is it possible to transfer or use images made in Norton Ghost to FOG at all?
