  1. I've been tasked with setting up a school radio station. I've been given some advice from a member of staff's friend who runs an internet radio station. I need to do some costing for it so want to check a few things and wondered if anyone could help. Would we need 1 or 2 computers, ive been told to get 2 but unsure what each would actually do. Licenses, ive been told about PRS and PPL licenses but been told by this contact that we could buy a license from swcast.net for $10 a month. Also once you have the licenses, do we need to download music and pay for it or what? This guy also reccomended software called samsbroadcaster which im told is £200. I thought we would be able to get all software for free, is this the case? Finally when it comes to hosting, instead of paying for this service would it be feasible to host it in school, especially as to begin with it would only be students listening. It is worth noting we are just setting this up to start with as a basic trial so we just want to be able to queue up some songs, podcasts etc and then also broadcast live as well. To begin with the idea is to have the link embedded into a player on our VLE. Will this be easy to setup?
  2. I have a pdf that i want to edit a few lines of text in. I have acrobat proffesional but dont seem to vbe able to do it, is it possible, are there any free apps to do this as i can only find stuff on how to merge.
  3. mc.local server is the exchange server at the college which we are trying to email. the mhs.local is our exchange server
  4. 2007, just ran microsoft updates on it yesterday to make sure it is up to date wth patches and rollup etc. Have Avast AV on it, we had probs due to AV a few weeks ago when we installed it but solved them and been fine ever since, plus that time the messages were coming from our server, so we knew it was our problem. Not changed anything on site before this happened.
  5. My school are trying to email a local College and all emaisl are being bounced back. It is worth noting our emails, according to them, are the only ones not getting through, and emails from our end are all going fine apart from to them. This is the bounceback we are reciieving, as the generating server is theirs, i am assuming it is their issue and there will be little i can do, but wouldnt mind confirmation on this. 6. everything except 2 servers were bought in 2007. the 2 servers were bought in 2005
  7. it includes 10 servers, SAN, Tape drives and the PowerVault backup server we have is £1300!
  8. I have recently become IT Manager and all our Dell server warranty is up this year. I've spoken with Dell and they have sent me through a quote of the cost to renew everything for 1 year and it comes to a staggering £11,000! Now we have had a couple hard drives fail in the past year and replaced but definitely not 11 grands worth! So i was wondering if anyone could suggest an alternative as the school will want to know what we have in place instead as i'd be a bit worried of our SAN failing or a DC going down which is a bit more serious than a failed hard drive.
  9. I wondered if someone could clear this up. We currently run Policy Central Enterprise but it still causes crashes in IE7 and im basically getting sick of the thing. Rather than looking at the alternatives (i only know of eSafe and Securus) i would be all for getting rid of the entire thing. I spoke to my LA and they advised me against not having the software as it would affect our Ofsted reports among other things. However as they were trying to push their product, Securus onto me at the time, im not sure if i completel;y believe them. So does anyone know, is it a legal requirement to have it and if not are there any definiate disadvantages we will put oursevles at as a school if we were to get rid of it?
  10. out of interest, i've got it setup and its working, without a TS license server running. So will that still be the case after a certain amount of days or not? My plan was to leave it as it is for now, test it on a few users from home and if all goes well, install the license server on our app server and purchase the licenses.
  11. cheers i'll get some quotes once i know what numbers i'll be wanting. thanks for all your help.
  12. ok thansk for clearing that up, so i want a "User CAL" for every member of staff with a laptop. Any suggestions on where to purchase from so i can see how much damage this is going to make on my budget?
  13. well initially on this TS ive only allowed 10 concurrent connections and the connections will be from school owned staff laptops from their homes. But it sounds like you are saying i'll need a license for every member of staff with a school laptop, regardless of how many concurrent connections are allowed on the TS? Just thinking, is this any different to me and my colleagues using RDP to connect to manage servers etc? should we not have some sort of licensing in place already to allows us to do that?
  14. sorry to be a pain, but exactly what type of licenses do i want as ive had a look and see there are device, user and external connector licenses available. Also where can i purchase them usually?
  15. Thats what i thought, hence putting a batch file together to run a 5 second sleep command and it works fine now, even used the cmd window to display a welcome message and simple instructions. I cant actually get the message up now, but i think its about being unable to contact a TS licensing server. We dont have one setup on our network but like i said i know pretty much nothing about them or what im expected to put in place. Im assuming i install TS licensing server (as a role) on a server? and then purchase some sort of licenses for the number of users ill be having connect to the TS concurrently, that right? Any ball park figures for what kind of costing i'm going to be hit with for this?
  16. ok fixed my problem, it just needed a batch file with a 2 second "sleep" in and it works fine, something to do with sims running instantly when you connect and logon to the box, it didnt seem to like it for some strange reason. Anyway as i now have my server up and running i'm left with 1 last problem. The licencing that it keeps popping up and telling me about in the tray. I've no idea what we need here, totally clueless so im going to do some research but if anyone can point me to any documents or inform me what i need to do, if anything, that would be brilliant.
  17. and localzuk does sims open and update fine and only once when it needs to? not everytime you run sims?
  18. i was about to thank you and say that its sorted as the first time i connected it went straight to the sims login screen without any upfgrading or prompts but then every other time its back to normal, going through the upgrading process (even though the client build is up to date) and prompting to install the "SIMSCentralServerSetup.EXE". Do you know if this should be installed, o9n our sims server maybe as i dont think it is, but never really come accross it before?
  19. im aware sims will check for updates each time it runs but currently everytime i open sims on the TS it actually does the upgrade process and takes a few minutes doing it then prompting the user to run "SIMSCentralServerSetup.EXE" and it does this everytime which is obviously not ideal. There is no sims.ini file created in c:\windows or in the admin profile so im starting to get a bit stumped. Im not sure of "Needs to have the full Sims Infrastructure as well as Sims Apps run on it as admin" though, all im doing is running the simsinst.exe like i normally would on a client. should i be doing something extra?
  20. thanks for the help, i didnt realise that it eventually logs you off once you close the application. The only other major problem at the moment i have is that everytime i load up sims it brings up an error about the sims.ini file while trying to update. I tried copying the sims.ini file from c:windows on my pc to the TS and now it runs the upgrade fine. the problem is it runs the sims upgrade now every time i open sims, which is rather annoying.
  21. I've got a TS up and running. i plan to use it so staff can connect and run sims on it. I want it to connect using a generic user account, it then runs sims automatically so all staff have to do is just enter their sims credentials. - ive managed to achieve this. The problem is i dont get a taskbar when i connect or see any of my desktop icons, so when it comes to logging off.... i cant! On the TS if i changed the option on the "environment" tab to "do not allow an initial program to run, show desktop only" then it works and i see a desktop. but i want to use the option below so that on the TS icon on staff laptops i can specify to run sims" Anyone help?
  22. I've been tasked with researching 3d projectors and possibly seeing if we could arrange a trial. I just wondered if anyone was using them in schools yet and if they could throw some vital statisitcs my way, ie price and how good (or bad) they are?
  23. i have a laptop for a member of staff. We have being giving staff limited account access so that they cant install any old stuff on their laptops. As they very rarely use them in school the laptops are not on the domain. I want to grant a user admin access on one folder in Program Files so that they can run the program but the security tab you get on domain computers doesnt appear. Is there anyway of setting this up?
  24. In the past ive looked at putting together a Terminal Server to allow staff to use sims on their staff laptops from home via the VPN. As ive never configured a TS from scratch and i dont have a lot of time free at the moment ive not been able to get one sorted. However i realsied you can install sims directly onto a laptop then as long as the sims network drive is mapped and the VPN connected it works. Now are there are legal or security issues with this method and that i should not think about implementing this and concentrate soley on getting a TS sorted anyone?
  25. i think ive just found the asp equivalent command! but thanks all the same
