Are you looking into Virtulisation - if so which platform. If VMware I can highly recommend Dell Equallogics which are really nice and simple. The other options if Sans are too expensive is to custom make a server and install something like OPEN-E which is a software SAN.

Personally I would go with Server 2008 R2 as a Basic DC, File/Print possible sharepoint and then push email etc to Live@edu. But SBS will work it just doesn't give great flexibility to expand (although with 2011 you can have 2 DC's if you get the upgraded version).

VMware view was perfect on Raspberry pi (using PCOIP). @SimpleSi - I have a ModMyPi case here so might do some drawings and see what I can come up with. The share isn't set to having max connections by accident is it? If windows 7 drops the connection - another client users it against the server and then when the previous client tries to reconnect it hits the limit? I'm not really sure to be honest just guessing now!!

Yes but if there is a dodgy dns entry for your server in DNS - when the initial cached dns record expires and it does a lookup again it may be being given the wrong dns entry. Or it could actually be an issue with the network card - can the users access the internet while not able to connect to the mapped drive.

can the devices ping the server in which this mapped drive is located? no rouge DNS entries for it?

You can also do this with the lower cost Android Devices and Emerge Groupcall Emerge - the powerful yet intuitive iPhone / iPod 'App' which enables schools to have an up-to-the-minute copy of their MIS data instantly and securely available in the palm of their hand might be cheaper to get these on contract then Iphones.

I've thought about that - I've also had it running VMware View. But the problem is finding a case and power supply which gives the user the ability to turn it off without pulling the plug. Custom design is fine but the costs rack up quickly.

I would also recommend Air Stream. On another note for people already with Apple TV's and want to easily mirror a windows laptop to one there is Air Parrot which I have on my work laptop for presentations in the board room were we have an apple tv.

Just after some advice regarding low cost thin clients. What I'm looking for is something which is easily pre-configured and can literally be plug and play. Anybody any recommendations? After a few messages with Cybernerd custom build could be an option but still in the early days - needs to be compatible with VMware View.

I would put something between the mains the server which does Surge protection but yes as long as one PSU is in the UPS and you don't have a second then the mains would be fine as long as its surge protected.

Not used the Aerohive but as working for a Meraki Reseller I have to say its brilliant! Although if you are in a school within an LEA it could be trickey to implement without getting the LEA to allow ports outbound (which I can't remember off the top of my head somewhere between 7-8000 i think). You can also have Switching, firewalls and mobile devices all configured from one management portal in the cloud. I will however say that what it does tie you into is a yearly fee for the cloud manager as well as upfront costs for the Access points/firewalls/switches. EDIT: Meraki also have a Android/Windows app for checking wireless strength around the place which is free (so is the IOS/Android manager). But they if you are used to paying for support from ruckus/aerohive/hp etc its similar in cost to that. We love it for clients with multiple offices across uk - a member of staff can turn up at another site and there wireless just works. It is also the same for if somebody plugged an access point in at home etc (you can setup so that is bridges a VPN from Access point to network I think)

Yes and what is the unique identifier going to be on the cashless system? is it going to be roll number? if so having that printed will enable ease of lookup if its looking that way.

I've got a sharepoint site which has had to be restored in a strange way - i.e we only have a copy of the content db. From what I have read the content db should be able to be mounted in a sharepoint site of the same version - this is fine and has mounted the db ok. The problem i now have is although there is a 40gb content db attached there doesn't appear to be any sharepoint data being shown - anybody any ideas where to start?
