Actually they merged with another company a while back which is where i think they got the SCL part from I seem to remember probably around oct 2011 if not earlier. I think it was SCL online and by all accounts there hardware was just as bad!!

More likely to get it running in VMware - it supports a hell of a lot more OS's then Virtualbox and Hyper-V

yes you will need to stop the kms server readding the dns address back in - fairly easy to do Cold cup of coffee: Disable KMS server DNS record publishing

If its just User data on the physical server I can highly recommend BackupPC. It won't do full host backups but install a ubuntu machine with decent amount of space. "apt-get install backuppc" login to the web interface and point it at the share. It will backup the data and then manage it all by itself. Its very good for just pure user files and as it utilises hard links for the files the storage is very efficient. I kept 6 weeks worth of 12tb front end storage using 14Tb. (Full Backup Every week, Incrementals mid week). For Hyper-V VM's then Veeam.

Yup that is what I was going to hint towards. It's very good at what it does and I use to to replicate Servers every hour offsite to a datacenter. Only ever had one person complain and that was becuase it was during the olympics and it slowed the internet down for people watching online!

What is your front end running on? VMware? Hyper-V?

Well that price on the Iomega is cheaper then my buy price.

Most Probably - not used one personally but I setup an Iomega PX4-300R in a DR situation last week which had 4 TB of storage although we put it in raid 1+0. The 8Tb version is a few under quid cheaper on Ebuyer then the one you are looking at (and infact is a really good price!).

I would go with a higher end device which you can use for ISCSI - in the event of needing to be able to boot your VM's from the Nas box you want something that will give you half decent performance if the need arises. Toby

I recommend Lenovo Laptops - i have a work E420 and its pretty sturdy and robust.

It used to be something like £299 for the first device per year and then £99 for each device after that so if you had 5 devices it would cost you £695 a year. Or a site license for unlimited devices is around £2500 a year. These may have changed but its roughly that much (I purchased Summer 2011 though).

Yup - when using all the parts of sims there is a lot you can do from the register. But I'm fairly sure it would be possible to do from a browser and tie back into the SQL but Capita have said its not going web-based for a good few years* *I'm fairly sure they have confirmed till like 2018 or something stupid when the rest of the world will be done

My Last place did a major Admin reshuffle and during this i custom coded multiple PHP forms which submitted via email to the administration helpdesk (sitting withing Request Tracker which IT/Premises also used). Staff could also email direct to the admin staff helpdesk via Admin@school etc. Some staff complained (the busybody's) but on the whole it was accepted and best of all the Admin Team loved me so even more tea and biscuits

I havn't used sims.net for a good 6 months but can you not right click on the register and add behaviour reports etc

The people behind them don't have time - or they change there mind in what they want to do
