I've had this problem before but this time the recommended solutions don't work. The problem is that during the update (which crawls along) I get the error "SimsApplicationSetup.exe is in use and cannot be installed". I have deleted the SOLUS downloads folder (the one with loads of numbers) and re-downloaded quite a few times now to no avail. I have also made sure that there is no AV software running during the update (Capita's advice) and turned off the diskeeper service in case it was that. No joy. It also borks SIMS and forces me to restore each time it goes wrong so each attempt is taking ages to do. Any ideas? Cheers HBJB

Did you get rid of it? If so how? I managed to get around it by filling it in using my favourite "test" user profile, logging out and then saving the profle back as the default, but an easier way would be nice. HBJB

I can get flash to install but not shockwave. It keeps trying to install via GPO when the machine boots but clearly does not go all the way. HBJB

Hmmmm, I seem to recall reading somewhere that another school had a similar issue and the caretaker was told to "secure" the PCs to the bench. Yep you guessed it, over the weekend he drilled through the underneath of the benches and screwed 6" screws through the holes and into the PC chassis. Of course this meant that the motherboard was perforated as well. He anticipated praise for a job well done and was consequently a bit surprised at the right royal rollocking he got from the Network Manager on the Monday morning. :lol: HBJB

We use it. Our maths FM loves it. As for the MSI, I find it runs well from the server. Just a sortcut to the proggy is required. HBJB

Yep, block binaries on the student and most likely the staff filtering as well (we do) and allow the ones that are essential through. HBJB

Yep, I don't plan to use APs to connect to other APs. The units will only be going in areas that are already wired or will be wired in order to supply the AP. Why oh why do the current "buzz words" have such a big effect on those who don't underdstand the inplications of it and make them expect it to happen overnight and work properly despite having no money thrown at it. So from what I gather, buy cheap buy twice should be applied in this case. I should get a few firms in to take a look over the site and gleen some info on kit and prices from them and do it myself. BTW at the moment we have a dozen or so Dlink APs (cheap and cheerful) and although they seem to be faily reliable when working they do need constant re-booting and they seem not to release the IP when it's lease is up. The range is poor and they arnn't capable of using two distint IP ranges and subnets....... come to think of it they're crap !! Gaaahhhhh. HBJB

Can you kick them into action for me then please? I've been waiting three weeks to get a response from them about an issue we have with IP Addresses. (yes, we have to use a range assigned by them). I'm about to launch into a major barny with them if something doesn't happen soon. :twisted: HBJB

Thanks for the replies. I'm in full agreement about the uselessness of wireless as a total solution but the powers that be want to dish out loads of laptops to students and staff and insist that they must be able to connect anywhere. Only half of our rooms are cabled and yet we will be moving over to E-reg after Easter (and no, they've not told me officialy yet, I got it from someone else). I'm going to cable all the rooms anyway in time and when that's done I suppose I could put a wireless unit in each or every other room and see how that goes. Oh and we install all the cables ourself here along with whiteboards/projectors/cabinets etc so I'm a bit out of touch with third party suppliers at the moment. I sometimes think that we're given impossible tasks just to keep us on our toes. lol. HBJB

Hi, Not sure if this is the right section, but my head has asked me to get the school surveyed for wireless since the (cheap) kit we have put in does not seem to cope or work very well. It would seem that we have too many pipes/girders/wires/dense double skin walls etc for an effective signal to escape from one room to the next. Has any-one here had a firm in to conduct a survey and to advise on the right sort of kit to deploy? If so who? Thanks HBJB

Excellent . We're picking up about 10 a day at least whan we vnc into the machines a lunch and break. I made a not of a couple of sites that have lists of them. I think one had over 750 listed. Unfortunatly the RM SafetyNet filtering that we use cannot import URLs so we have to put them in manualy. A job for the tech I think I think we'll put a Smoothwall box in between the RM SmartCache (spit) and the external to enable a more customisable upstream proxy. As mentioned earlier if they stop using the obvious words like proxy, myspace, bebo etc they'll be a lot harder to pick up. HBJB

... and for those who didn't know, there's an MSI for DiDA Student. The white screen is cause by Flash. We had it as well and as stated earlier an upgrade fixed it. Also if you're running it from a CD server (as we did initialy) you'l need to run a reg patch to enable them so see the help files. HBJB

LOL They've put a terms and conditons page on the site even though its primary purpose is to circumvent someone elses T&C and AUP. That's a bit rich bless 'em. HBJB

Here's one that pretends to be an education resource. It even allows you to "blank" the screen with a wikipedia page. Examstudies Username for the portal is random and the password is random1 This one is sneaky. HBJB

Two mins work with netsh It seems to me that 100 days is nearly static so why no go to the next step. Because we are tied to which range we can use by the SWGfL I had to recently ask to be moved onto a different subnet which doubled our allocation. Because we were converging our admin and curriculum networks using new servers on the joined network we were effectivly running 3 distinct sets of IP addresses all on different subnets. Bloody RM. Wht can't we use the range we choose and not one that they say we must use? HBJB
