  1. Does anyone here have one of these in working order that they are getting rid of? Or even just the electronics pack from the back? One of our boards seems to have finally given up and I need to replace/fix it as cheaply as possible... I have just noticed that the model is actually "proActiv System 78"
  2. I am going on Monday for my 30th(ish) time...It's a chance for a nice lie down although now we have to sit in a fancy seat tipped back with legs in the air!
  3. ...well obviously I always practice what I preach...NOT... Over the last few days I have been trying to install Moodle on my localhost to have a go at setting it up to replace our current VLE. Every time I was getting stuck at the screen where I am asked to setup the admin account. I would fill in all the details and submit only to be bounced back to the same page...with a warning about an incorrect password format... Until finally this afternoon I actually read the message properly and noticed that there was an instruction to include a non-alphanumeric character...which needless to say I had not been including... ...doh...
  4. Where is the data coming from? Is that passing it it in US format?
  5. Ooh, the Daily Fail readers at this school will love this when they hear about it! Most of them live locally (unlike me) where UKIP was elected at the recent elections...
  6. Why should they fear us...we only get the chance to get rid of them occasionally and I didn't put the current lot or the last lot where they are (or were). Our voting system means that my vote is effectively ignored as I live in an area that is solidly biased towards one party and has been ever since I started voting!
  7. I am sceptical about the wholesale monitoring of internet traffic simply as others have said because the sheer volume of data involved. If our government(s) are unable to build a national system for storing our medical data (data that they already know exists!) then what are the chances they could build something capable of monitoring and analyzing ALL the internet traffic we generate! I also have to say that the cynic in me can't help suspecting that all the hints about events that have been prevented and the bad guys plotting out there all helps to contribute to what Michael Moore called the "United States of BOO!". A good dose of fear amongst the general populace makes it much easier to justify giving mega amounts of funding to the security forces. Either way, I am still more likely to be hurt driving, cycling or walking...
  8. Well I think I can see the problem this one had
  9. It always make me laugh that when someone asks me to take photos for them and I crouch down to get a good angle they invariably say something like "ohh, looks like we have a professional here" My favourite was when I was taking pics of my son and his friends at their graduation and I was referred to by another guy's mum as "a professional dad"! I was slightly less happy that when I sent her a link to my gallery of the photos she downloaded the lot and then posted them on her facebook page without any reference to who took them...
  10. First go...10480 points Most of the locations I got were in Mexico and one in Australia...stuff along the roadside gave me enough clues to make an educated guess...
  11. The problem I have always found is that my eyes are much better in low light than any camera and lens I have owned (or could afford to own anyway) so I am usually disappointed with the shots I get. Capturing fast moving subjects in low light is possible if you have deep enough pockets...just look at the lenses used by photographers at big sporting events! Basically you need the largest aperture you can afford (smallest number) and a body with the fastest ISO value you can afford. Other than that you need to practice panning with the subject...back when I shot with film I could track fairly fast subjects and get them in focus about 50% of the time. This still relies on the aperture and film speed (ISO) being enough for the light conditions though.
  12. I am confused...the BBC video shows the starboard engine billowing smoke but the Sky one seems to be showing the port engine...or is one of the videos back to front?
  13. lol...that was my first reaction
  14. We have recently got one of these Quad setups and so far they seem pretty good...I have been able to go quite a long way down the corridor outside the hall and still get reception. The microphones are a bit susceptible to noises while being handled but the switch can be flicked onto mute very easily to avoid this while passing it to another person. The only thing I think may be a weak point is that they use replaceable batteries rather than rechargeables and I expect the time will come that someone plans to use them but doesn't check the batteries until milliseconds before they need them...
  15. Personally I am trying to get our SLT and other staff to get together and talk about what they want from ICT in the future. The hardest part is to get them to stop seeing the provision of IT services as just part of ICT as a subject. They need to start considering IT provision as more like gas, electricity and other utilities in that it is now so necessary for the running of the school. What I am trying very hard to avoid is snap decisions to buy ever more varied shiny stuff that they have decided "all other" schools are using.! If I am honest I would love some independent body to give me guidance on what technologies I should be investing in as even my LEA will only push their solutions just as any respectable salesman (an oxymoron?) would do. The thing that gets me down is that if I hold them back to try and get the best solution then I am seen as blocking progress...whereas if I go with their snap decisions I risk being criticized for wasting money...the trick is therefore to make sure any purchasing decision is theirs and not mine but still get the right gear.
  16. What's a SIMS update?* *our SIMS is hosted by our LEA so we don't do updates any more
  17. A twelve bore? Or in my more extreme moments of rage (usually after I have run my lawnmower over a pile of sh1t...again) a Gatling gun controlled by an infra-red camera with image recognition software that can identify cats...and their owners who will never admit that their cat would leave it's mess anywhere but the litter tray! ...and breathe...

How about this...the photo is my own so no issues with copyright The attached file is eps so you can play with the colours... tomato.7z
  19. The first question was very clear...it referred to "the man next door", i.e. singular... [WARNING] Pendantry detected... [/WARNING]
  20. 6/10 and classed as a "Promising Pedant", but then I already knew that * *I guessed at least 3 correctly so my real score is 3/10...but as a child of the 60's and 70's teaching revolution I blame the system!
  21. Here is my effort... eps file attached t&J.zip
  22. A true vector file should be much smaller surely, as it is basically just a mathematical formula...
  23. As far as I can tell the system managers are finally seeing their chance to rule again after the anarchy of computer users having control of their own data The rot started with networks and then thin clients...the cloud is their chance to really grab you by the b@lls Actually for private use I can see the benefit of Google Docs...no more microsoft licences for one and access from anyway for another...but in truth I am not sure how often that will be useful for non-work related files... ...but then again I am even older than the OP (ie over 50) ..also I don't really get the appeal of tablet devices that can do only some of what my full computers can do...
  24. That will be the next option if it happens again...although the teacher involved will kick up a stink...still...at least upsetting her will make my day
  25. We don't have anything as exotic as vlans or subnets All the laptops are the same make and model and all built at the same time. Fairly basic netgear gigabit switches. I am beginning to suspect witchcraft from what I know of the teacher involved
