    Desktop lock down

The default group policy does allow them to change mouse settings...I will lock this down once I have forced them back to default.
  2. I am looking for the best way to restore default settings for mouse and desktop icon position on our XP/Server 2003 network. Then I want to lock the settings to the defaults. I have noticed that many year 6 pupils are turning on mouse trails and custom pointers as well as arranging the desktop icons in ever more bizarre patterns. Since I am a miserable old git at heart I want to stop this! I thought I could do this through Group Policy objects but haven't been able find a way so far.
  3. Don't laugh but our class teachers still insist on having their own inkjet printer in their classroom. Despite my best efforts I have been unable to persuade them that shared colour lasers are better (we have only 1 in the IT suite). I guess they object to walking to the printer to get their prints! Is anybody else still using inkjets and if so I would like comments on makes/models to buy/avoid like the plague... I have at present got all Epson C84 or D68 which are nothing but trouble...
  4. Have a look at http://forums.cnet.com/5208-6129_102-0.html?forumID=29&threadID=111901&messageID=1271506 There are some interesting ideas there
  5. Ok then, how about pressing F8 This turns on/off extended select mode and does something like you describe...although the cell can be deselected by clicking Maybe Excel is stuck in this mode...?
  6. I have been looking at these menus for some of my sites and found some great ideas here http://www.cssplay.co.uk/menus/flyout_4level.html There are some great commented scripts here that are helping me to understand the whole css thing better
  7. Have you looked at the ClickLock setting under mouse properties in control panel? Turning this on with a shortest possible delay gives the effect you are seeing.
  8. This problem is due to differences in the css interpretation of IE6 You will need some IE6 only hacks in the css to solve it try adding /* Hacks */ * html #menu li { float: left; height: 1%; } * html #menu a { height: 1%; } /* End Hacks */ to your css...it should fix the height issue in IE6
  9. Yes, XGA takes you up a level fron SVGA so you can go to 1024x768. Of course then we get sunny days like we have been getting lately and the kids can barely see the board anyway...
  10. Yes you should stick to the native resolution of the TFT...but...in the case of projectors you should run at their native resolution, not the laptops. The cheap (ha ha) projectors we were supplied have a native resolution of 800x600, if we go any higher small text is unreadable from the back of the classroom.
  11. What model of projector are you using...my guess would be PLC-SW35? We have 12 of these and they are the subject of much correspondence with Promethean. I was also told that we use them too much and that our school is too dusty! These units have 4 fans and 4 filters and supposedly sealed optics...so how does the dust get into the optics...and if the filters are getting blocked they are clearly doing their job, so where is the dust getting in? I now clean the filters every 2 weeks but I have several projectors that are going to need the full £175 clean. The worst part of that is that we have to pay to send the units to Promethean and we don't get a replacement so the whiteboards will be unusable for 10 days or more. Oh and after less than 2 years bulbs have started failing which costing about £180 a time to replace. There are a number of schools in our county (Hampshire) that have the same problems and are spending way too much on maintenance of their IWB installations and I know that many schools in Kent are in the same boat. I have gone from a full time IT technician to part-time as the rest of my day I am now an AV technician. Things are so bad that I find mysef secretly wishing someone would steal the projectors so I can buy new ones... :? I have heard from one company that also fit these systems that the projectors they supply (Hitachi I think) only need cleaning once or twice a year...bliss! All this makes me more nostalgic than ever for the smell of chalk in classrooms...

    Dead Laptops

I have just had 2 Dell D600s repaired. 1 new MoBo 1 new screen hinge. I found a company called ClonesUK near our school in Portmouth. Their website address is http://www.clonesuk.co.uk Their price for a MoBo was about 1/2 the Dell price. They also were quick and efficient. -------------------------------------------------------------- "On a clear disk you can seek forever..."
