Hi. I can't find it at the moment but both NUT and NASUWT have advice on their websites about how teachers should be using social networking sites. May be worth a look there.

Some of our staff went on an exchange programme to Alabama a few years back and toured some of their local schools. They were amazed by the lack of ICT that the schools they visited had. They were also pretty shocked by the policies concerning SEN too but that's another story!

Thanks. We actually got it sorted the other day and in fact it now does log 25clients on at the same time - all logged on in a couple of mins. Very odd solution in the end - all we did was disable the RSOP feature via group policy and now it flies.

I manage SIMS here - doing a lot of reporting, assessment, attendance, implementing new modules, Census etc and I also am IT Manager so do all the techie side of SIMS and networking. Now although I have been on the SQL course and done a bit in the past I can't recall (other than migrating from SQL 2000 to 2005 when Capita demanded it) of any time that I have used SQL knowledge in my use of SIMS. My feeling (others may disagree) is that the knowing SIMS is the important bit - in theory you should need to do very little/nothing with the SQL backend.

I think the point is home directories need flash files in for coursework. They just add an awful lot of non-leggit ones too. If you set up a shared area how can you tell which files the students put in there are school and which are not?

But if you restrict running flash files using that method they won't be able to run the legit ones needed for coursework.

Our folks seem to manage it on a playing field and they all seem to have only the 2 arms. You only need 1 hand to mark a SIMS register really.

Here we just get a list of who the PE department are actually teaching and modify the class list on SIMS so it reflects who they have in their groups.

We have a Windows 2003 terminal server which serves a number of old PCs with Thinstation and a number of HP terminals. If you logon to a thin client it logs in fine and works well. If you get a number of people logging on together (10 to 15) the clients all sit on applying your settings for ages (10 to 15 minutes) before getting to the desktop. Once on all works well and the terminals run like the proverbial greased whippet! We use mandatory profiles, redirected my documents, appdata and start menu. Any ideas what may be wrong? If the same class logon to a room of fat clients they are all on in under 2 mins. We know it isn't a comms issue. Any help gratefully recieved Cheers

Yes - that was fun when I found out 12Gb actually means 4Gb and 8Gb on 2 drives. I got ours booting to the 8Gb as the primary and everything fits well enough on them.

It has worked really well here. Things to consider are how cover teachers from outside school are going to cope. We have given ours a cover username and password and they use that in rooms with PC's. We are also going to get some eeepcs for cover office to dish out. TBH we don't have that many external cover staff now as we have 4 learning managers who do most of the cover. The only other thing is really getting staff into the culture change. SLT really backed the project in this area so someone each day would check for untaken registers and chase that member of staff up. It is now a tiny number usually with good reason that are missed. The final thing we did here is abolish PM reg so our Period 5 mark is written back into the PM reg. This really means staff have to fill things in accurately and on time or your attendance figures will really bomb. All in all I am pleased with the results (and it ticked a box on my performance management!). The persistent truants are easy to pick out with it which is good and form tutors/ heads of year get a very full picture of their kids attendance.

Indeed. I have implemented a similar thing for PE using the 12Gb, Atom processored version of the EEEPc. They have Windows and SIMS installed on them and are set to autologon to the network and run SIMS so all the staff do is power them up and they are presented with a SIMS logon box. They seem to be pretty happy with them so far.

Another vote for HP54xx here. We love ours. We've also added the wireless controller which is very nice indeed. Means we are migrating to a managed wireless system for a reasonably small amount of money.
