Thanks Vikpaw - that is the conclusion that I have come to having spoken to staff at existing academies who use FMS. It appears that the solution to using FMS as an academy is to create a load of reports and export a load of data to excel, and then spend a little while collating all of that data into a useful form. I gather that Capita are working on a solution for the Non recoverable VAT issue - which should be with us... in a year. Until then, we would have to use a crude work around. @Spuffmonkey - I think that you have a fair point. FMS doesn't inspire confidence. As part of the academy conversion process, we will have to part with several thousand pounds to re-licence FMS - money which could be spent on some more modern and productive software. The only downside to this is that FMS is (I assume) the only financial package that links to the Personnel module in SIMS. Other than that though, by moving to the likes of Sage or E1 Finance we would stand to have a much more robust and modern piece of software, with much better reporting facilities - for what would appear to be a lower price (certainly in the case of Sage).

As a LEA maintained school, we don't need to provide any of that data at the moment. If FMS does have this functionality, I don't know where it is. I get the feeling that we would be having to constantly export data into Excel and hand it over to our accountant, which would be messy and expensive. Other software such as Sage provides the extra functionality needed, and it isn't stuck in the last century like FMS. My suspicion is that people needing this kind of info are switching to more 'business oriented' software. Has anyone out there moved from FMS to Sage - what are your experiences?

We are a primary school becoming an academy later this autumn. We use SIMS as our MIS and FMS for finance. As an academy, we are required to provide the following financials: A statement of financial activities A detailed income and expenditure account A balance sheet A cash flow statement Is it possible to do this in FMS, or are we going to have to get some extra software in? What are other academies doing?

I've just redone our school prospectus using scribus. It was ideal for the job.

Yeah, we use them. They are very easy to use. No image stabilisation, so we often have to use with a tripod. Also issues using videos created on this camera in movie maker. We have to convert them from mp4 to avi before editing. The image quality is good however and they have a decent amount of memory and battery life. I think on balance , this is a decent camera for the price

Just been doing just this to get Flip videos working in movie maker. The best tool I found was mp4cam2avi. I found that other conversion software caused the audio and video to lose sync.

I disagree that this is a political issue. People can't help but want more stuff, and are goaded into believing that they can have what they want by the companies that are going to take their last pennies. The ultimate problem is that we are a greedy country, and no change in government can change that. I doubt the recession or a new government will see the decline of store cards or finance for getting a new sofa.

We have a room full of 3610's. They are great: fully capable of running all of the software we need to use, as well as being very quiet, which gives us a nice working environment.

I have swapped my iphone 3g for a desire. Only found out about the proxy issue after I got the phone! I've also had a few problems with the active sync integration linking to live@edu. Other than that, it is a great phone. So much faster than the iphone which makes a lot of day to day operation easier.

The Ubuntu install doesn't effect the base operating system. It just installs Ubuntu on a memory stick and boots from that. Thereby there is little risk in having a crack.

Ran RM CC3 at a previous school. Whenever I went to any RM training courses or "Technical" conference, I couldn't help but be irritated by the fact that every RM employee appeared to start their sentence with the word "So..." . Has anyone else noticed this or is it just me? Do they have internal training session at RM where they say " So...You need to disregard all your previous knowledge of good sentence structure and tack the word "so" on at that start. I have expect any RM press releases to start with the word "So.." Ridiculous

I'm looking to get a phone to be used by our Head. We use the MS live@edu calendar and email system, so it's really important that whichever phone I get links well with that. My Iphone links to live@edu and Exchange really well. How do some of these other phones fair? Also, any idea where to start in terms of tarrifs/data plans etc ?

If you want to use Windows on it you'll have to get the machine with an MS OEM licence anyway. Ours had Windows 7 Home on them, then we bought the Pro upgrade licence.

If you run a Windows based desktop, have you tried WinSCP. I find it helps me a great deal to keep track of where files are. Have you looked in /var/www?

Hi All, I'm hoping there is someone out there who has had a bash at this. I'm trying to get 2008 R2 RemoteApps working over an Adito OpenVPN ALS VPN. Remote Desktop itself works perfectly through adito, but it would be great to stream the apps directly. Does anybody have any idea how I can make this work? Anyone know of an extension which might give me this functionality?

If you got into the account management console, edit you group, and look under 'Delivery Management' . If your use isn't a member of a group, then I'm not so sure. Maybe check your mx settings. To add my pennies worth to this discussion, I have found live@edu to be great. We have plenty of control over our email setup, and have found it to just work. We save the hassle of running our own exchange server and it has been very reliable. I would certainly recommend it.

Have you checked you transport rules for that group, as it is possible to block incoming emails, but allow outgoing? I think at least one of my groups defaulted to this to start with.

This suite is in a primary school and they manage all of the primary applications no problem. Most of these are just flash based - and aren't a massive strain on the resources of the machine. In response to the question about securing the Revos to the monitor, no they are not bolted to the screens - to be honest I'm not sure how you could do that easily as a result of the small chasis on the Revo. We will rely on other measures such as cctv etc - fortunately we don't have a problem with student vandalism.
